The CD has a sticker saying "
Includes the single Run Rudolph Run performed by Lemmy Kilmister, Billy Gibbons and Dave Grohl" WTF? That should make most rock fans curious.
"We Wish You A Metal Xmas And A Headbanging New Year" is a Christmas CD performed by Hard Rock and metal musicians. The line-up on this album is very alike the brilliant
"Butchering the Beatles" and again the excitement lie in the pairing of musicians plus the odd and non-metal Christmas theme. Even before I popped in the CD I was dying to hear the advertised single, but also Chuck Billy from Testament and Scott Ian from
Anthrax perform
Silent Night.
The opening track
We Wish You A Merry Xmas is done in typical
Jeff Scott Soto style - if one neglects the lyrics you wouldn't notice this being a Christmas tune. The same goes for
God Rest the Merry Gentlemen performed by Dio/Heaven and Hell. The pairing of Dio's voice and Iommi's crushing riffs is unique and has a spooky Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell" trademark all over it.
Billy Gibbbons from
ZZ Top makes
Run Rudolph Run rock and roll. This version grooves......and regarding Lemmy. Lemmy is Lemmy! he can only hit a few notes but does it effectively. This record is supposed to be played after the kids have gone to bed. Lemmy ends the song by wishing us merry xmas in his own style "Merry X-mas motherfuckers". Another highlight is Ripper Owens tearing it up on
Santa Claus is Back in Town. Deep Purple's Steve Morse really shines and Ripper's vocals are the best throughout the whole CD.
Chuck Billy doesn't disappoint as he growls his way through a thrash version of
Silent Night. Ha ha. Obscure is the label for this version. The almost opposite of thrash metal is Glam Metal, which is taken care of by Ratt's
Stephen Pearcy and Tracii Guns. The 2 legendary Sunset Strip rockers put a sleazy mark on
Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer. Not all songs are effective. The amazing line up consisting of Alice Cooper, John 5,
Billy Sheehan and Vinny Appice doesn't make
Santa Claws is coming to Town work despite putting in some scary Cooper emotions. Another disappointing track is
Silver Bells sung by a very restrained Geoff Tate. The 2 closing tracks are the weakest on the disc: Both Doro's
O' Christmas Tree and Girlschool
Auld Lang Syne are awful.
Overall "We Wish You A Metal Xmas And A Headbanging New Year " is a quite entertaining album..ho ho ho!
