Article - Michael's Highlights of the year 2008

Written by Michael

2008 was a dream year for Rock. All the big names released albums; AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Metallica and Motley Crue. Furthermore all my favorite bands released new albums. Motley Crue, Enuff Z'Nuff, White Lion, AC/DC, Whitesnake, Guns N' Roses, Tesla, Whitesnake and Quireboys all rank among my 10 favorite bands. However, not all made this years list

The best albums of 2008

1. Whitesnake - Good to be Bad
Big and chunky just like it was 1987

2. Enuff Z' Nuff - Dissonance
Only released as a limited edition sold at Rocklahoma, but hopefully it will see a 2009 release. Chip and Donnie sound very inspired.

3. AC/DC - Black Ice
Okay. It is AC/DC so you know what you are gonna get. However, the old geezers have come up with their best material in 20 years.

4. Guns N Roses - Chinese Democracy
There are some really great songs on it.

5. The Erotics - Rubbish
The greatest discovery of 2008. I need to track down their discography.

6. Jones Street - Dancing with the Devil
Recorded in 1991-1995 - released in 2008. They just don't do this kind of ass kicking Skid Row Heavy Rock anymore.

7. Big Cock - Motherload
Another great album from Robert Mason and David Henzerling.

8. Fatal Smile - World Domination
This Swedish band got all the great tours of 2008 and "World Domination" proves why. A great sounding record.

9. Spike - So Called Friends
Quireboys frontman once again pours a drink and invites you in for a doze of laid back Rock N' Roll.

10. Queen and Paul Rodgers - Cosmos Rocks
Queen teaming up with Paul Rodgers was not a bad idea. "War Boys" and "Say it Not True" are highlights but the album has a handful of really great tracks.

11. Black Stone Cherry - Folklore and Superstition
Heavy southern Rock with youthful energy. The debut album was a gem and album number two is another bull's eye.

12. Quireboys - Best of
A budget double disc released on EMI with lots of unreleased tunes and demos. A true collector item along with the hits from the first two records.

13. Steelheart - Good 2B Alive
Welcome back - the pipes of Miljenko Matijevic is still strong. Great songs with a modern twist.

 14. Saints of the Underground - Love the Sin, Hate the Sinner
Kerri Kelli, Bobby Blotzer, Jani Lane and Robbie Crane. A true supergroup.

15. Quireboys - Homewreckers and Heartbreakers
Quireboys made it twice on this years list and singer Spike made it - I stand by that I am a fan.

Not considered: Tesla - Forever More
Tesla has always been one of my favorite bands and their album "Forever More" was one of the most anticipated releases for 2008. I ordered the album October 3rd and ever since cdwow.com kept fucking up and delaying the release, so sadly Tesla "Forever More" wasn't considered for this years albums of the year - but I am confident it would have made the list.

The best reissues of 2008

1. UFO - reissue
In 2008 EMI started its UFO reissue program and each album was treated to lots of bonus tracks. This year 6 records were reissued among them:
Phenomenon/Force it/No Heavy Petting
Obsession

2. Hurricane - Take What You Want, Over the Edge and Slave to the Thrill
Caroline Records reissued Take What You Want, Over the Edge and Slave to the Thrill in cool LP replica sleeves. The music of Hurricane proves to be timeless. Album review

3. Waysted - Waysted plus../The good the Bad the Waysted
Album review

The magnificent seven concerts of 2008:

1. Queen and Paul Rodgers - Color Line Arena, Hamburg Germany October 5th

2. Poison - Sweden Rock festival, Sweden June

3. Hanoi Rocks - Sweden Rock festival, Sweden June

4. Bon Jovi - Gl. Estrup, Denmark June 19th

5. Ratt - Sweden Rock festival, Sweden June

6. Pretty Boy Floyd, Bullet Boys, Britny Fox -  Rock the Night Copenhagen, Denmark October 10

7. Def Leppard - Rock under Broen, Denmark June 14th
