Playlist - September/October 2008 - Steen
In the future my playlist will be a bi-monthly happening. I want to avoid too many repetitions and I'm also considering some ways to expand it.

Evergrey - Torn (Heavy Melancholy / Heavy Metal)
First listen didn't quite catch my attention but second time around the album quickly established itself as another compelling Evergrey effort, still drenched in melancholy. Tom's vocals never cease to make an impression.

Neal Morse - Lifeline (Progressive Rock)
His first non-concept album is a successful one but be prepared to take a more direct path down his religious road. A full review is coming.

Lanfear - X to the power of Ten (Heavy Metal)
Strong new singer + Complex yet melodic heavy metal = Lanfear reborn.

Metal Church - This present wasteland (Old School Heavy Metal in the now)
Metal Church continue in the vein of "A light in the dark". Solid heavy metal that grows better with age.

Bob Catley - Immortal (Power AOR)
Bob Catley and Gary Hughes are working together again and the result sounds heavy and highly promising upon first listen. "Open Your Eyes" is an instant ear hanger while "End of the world" sounds strangely familiar.

Helstar - The King of Hell (Power Metal)
Fast paced Metal with soaring vocals. Promising.

Into Eternity - The incurable tragedy (Progressive Death Metal)
Extremely well played progressive death metal. The vocals took a bit of getting used to but it's worth the time letting this album grow.

Sacred Dawn - Gears of the machine.... A new beginning (Heavy Metal)
Heavy metal with progressive tendencies. Interesting.

Diphtheria - To wait for fire (Heavy Metal)
Solid debut from a very promising band.

Rush - 2112 (Progressive Rock)
Even at the first listen I was pleasantly surprised at just how timeless the music feels. I have long been wanting to hear the 2112 suite and I was not disappointed. Excellent and a bit goofy.

Stan Bush - The Child Within (Rock)
The most mellow of the Stan Bush albums, but also one of the best.

Pride of Lions - Pride of Lions (AOR)
I discovered Pride of Lions all backwards and now I'm starting on their debut. Several "Wow!" moments have already made it another gem.

Jim Matheos - First Impressions & Away with words (Instrumental)
Two of the best instrumental albums in my collection.
"First impressions" features guitar, cello and violin and takes this constellation to a beautiful peak.
"Away with words" adds Mark Zonder on drums and Michael Manring on bass and experiments more.
Both are intriguing, atmospheric and relaxing experiences.

Falconer - Among Beggars and Thieves (Power Metal with a bit of Folk atmosphere)
Read review

Dezperadoz - Eye for an Eye (Gunslinging Heavy Rock)
Read review

D:A:D - Riskin' It All (Party Rock)
Read review

CD purchases of the month
Rush - 2112
Rush - A farewell to kings
Rush - Moving pictures
Stan Bush - The Child Within
Van Zant - Get right with the man

Hi Steen;
we kind of miss u aroud here, seems you're so busy, long time no review;)
I'm glad to see you're going through a "Rush" phase. 2112 is their best work in my opinion and as you said it's timeless.

I don't believe Gary Hughes had anything at all to do with "Immortal". It's all Magnus Karlsson's vehicle. You can hear his stamp all over the album... and I think its brilliant. Even the guitarist manages to mimic his sound, and he wrote some compelling material for Catley to sing.

Now Im all interested in that Lanfear album.

Dark Lord: Thanks! Yeah I'm keeping myself pretty busy here. But with all good things so I guess it's a positive problem :)
Sitewise it's always a battle between programming new features and expanding the content. I'm working on both at the moment so I'm bound to have something online again soon. There are soooo many albums I want to write about, have to take them one by one.

Alanna: You're absolutely right. I don't know how I got Gary Hughes mixed in there, probably because I only read the first lines of the promo material and then listened to it and thought "Wow, he's back!". Now I'm just looking forward to hearing it properly, ie. not the voice-over version. Initial impression is great!
