Playlist - June/July 2008 - Steen
The summer festival season started with a rock-solid Sweden Rock Festival (Report is coming in the next few days), followed by a surprisingly good Kim Wilde show (No report from this one) at the Esbjerg Rock Festival and a very good Bon Jovi show the following week (Report from Tommy is coming since his memory for various reasons is much better than mine). Now I'm warmed up for the Magic Circle Festival next week and expectations are immense.

On a side note, if you're a Beatles fan then check out the movie "Across the universe". A fantastic experience!

Diphtheria - To wait for fire
Inspired by a host of old school metal bands, especially Maiden but with enough identity to create their own sound, this band from Cyprus makes a very good impression. A promising debut.

Pyramaze - Immortal
It has grown a lot over the past month and is still fighting with the debut about being my favorite Pyramaze album. Great power metal.

Dezperadoz - Eye for an eye
Hard rock with a Western gun-slinging flavour makes this pretty unique. A solid album that grows on repeated listens.

Ted Nugent - Noble Savage
A listen to "Fred Bear" at a party was enough to convince me to check out Ted Nugent. First impression of this two disc collection is very good indeed.

Valensia - Nathalie (Single)
One listen and I was hooked on this ballad. After the first 30 listens it does loose some of its initial impact but this is enough to make the Valensia debut a high priority on my next CD shopping spree.

Stan Bush - Every beat of my heart
Another great Stan Bush album. A very positive album where songs like "Can't hide love", "It don't get better than this", "Never ending love" and "The search is over" lead the way.

Skagarack - Hungry for a game
I have some fond memories of this one from way back when. A pretty good re-discovery.

Edenbridge - For your eyes only (Single)
Being one of my favorite James Bond theme songs I had to check this one out. I commend the band for trying but this version doesn't capture the emotional, fragile feel of the original. Mostly because it is overproduced and Sabine sings it too nice.

Damian Wilson - Everything
I'll never tire of this music when I need to just sit back and relax.

I can't wait to read the write up of Sweden Rock.... AND you are going to Magic Circle? I am BEYOND green with envy on that one...

Skagarack was one of my fav bands back about 8 years or so ago. "Hungry for a Game" is SUPERB, just LOVE that title track. The self titled was also quite good but my memory of that is a bit more fuzzy.

Noticed Magnitude 9 in your list... had forgotten about them! In fact, I have forgotten about ALOT of prog bands from the 90s that were underground-ish. I wish there was a good site that listed these (noexit.net was one way back when).

Yes, I have a feeling that Magic Circle will be the highlight of the year. I hope that one day you'll be able to make it over here for a real Euro Metal festival. But anyway, the first 6 Manowar albums live.... Uhhh! I'll be sure to write a detailed report for those miss it.
Ahh Magnitude 9... Still haven't gotten to that one. Somehow it became another month where the number of CD's I purchased outnumbered those I managed to listen to. There will be some catching up to do in the coming months. Also looking forward to the Winger's.
"Forgotten prog bands of the 90s" That sounds like a good idea for an article!

Hi to the crew! What a happy, happy man! Purchased all three classic Winger albums in one month! I've been planning to do the same for a long time but always stick with new offerings of other bands instead. Respect.

Yes i hope to make it to one someday too, hopefully you can be my tour guide then! I am a pretty directionless individual and manage to get lost in my own house sometimes so hhaha... I do know a chick that lives in Germany but she doesn't like metal...for shame!
Looking forward to the Magic Circle writeup!!! Brazen Abbot w. Joe Lynn Turner sounds exciting too but of course Manowar - it doesn't get better than that.

The Forgotten Prog Bands of the 90s would be great, if only I could remember them all!! Maybe some research is in order here? I remember Superior, Letter X, and Eternity X and Centaur! and those have pretty much fallen off the radar... and old Elegy. Man those were some good albums!

Winger stuff is good too... although I must say it has been over ten years since I was introduced and am not sure how well they have held up. "Pull" though for certain, is pretty timeless since it just has a different sound than all the rest...

You can expect a complete guided tour, including a well rounded jukebox experience when you make it over here!
Yeah it doesn't get much better than Eternity X. Ahh and the first three Elegy albums were quite unique as well. I have heard lots of good things about Superior's Ultima Ratio so it's on my to-buy list. Never heard of Letter X and Centaur. Any album recommendations?

Oh ho, looking forward to it. Someday! Yes! I wanted to hit Rocklohoma here, it's about a... six hour drive? But with gas prices what they are, and the heat being so ridiculous I couldn't afford it and would probally pass out from heat exhaustion if I could! Eh well!

Do you know how long its BEEN since I've heard Letter X? I'm thinking... atleast ten years? But from what I recall, "Time of the Gathering" is a pretty good release and is a mix of AOR/progressive/power metal. From 1991 of all things!

As for CENTAUR. Power World from 1994 was their finest moment!

Loved the first three Elegy albums too! That first one just blew me away... they kind of "continued" (the vocalist atleast) in Prime Time, which had a more AOR direction. And Elegy just lost it once whathisname came on board. The Consortium guy.. IAN PARRY! Yes!

His pre-Elegy solo albums were just...strange. I had "Thru the Looking Glass" back in the 90s and it had the weirdest vibe.. have you heard that? Am I the only one that thinks that album is creepy, even though there is nothing outright "strange" about it? Hmmm.

Thanks for the recommendations. Found Centaur's God Complex in the bargain bin at Magic Circle and bought it blindly. Have yet to listen to it.

No, I haven't heard his solo albums but "Thru the looking glass" sounds strangely like something I should check out.

Never heard of Prime Time but I have to check that out now. I always wondered what happened to Hovinga.

I hope you like the Centaur album. It's been so long since i last heard it that I'm starting to have doubts if it was any good or not... since it seems the rest of the world has forgotten Centaur to the bargain bins.... ha.

Hovinga was also in a band called Sister Sin? I think? Something along those lines, though I have not heard it. The last time i heard his voice was Prime TIme's last disc. Always liked him and Elegy just sunk down the drain after he left.
