Playlist - July/August - Tommy
Blind Guardian. At The Edge Of Time
Somehow a return to old days of bombastic glory while the orchestrations makes it sound so fresh and vivid. Simply a great album.

First Signal. First Signal.
Superb Melodic Rock/AOR with Harry Hess in full control. When You Believe just sweeps you over completely.

H.E.A.T. Freedom Rock
Not up to the standard of the debut but still a fine collection of Melodic Rock.

Iced Earth. The Dark Saga
Classic album with a varied flow, this is the Iced Earth I long for.

Invictus. Black Heart
A few pretty good tunes and a bunch of listenable ones.

Mydra. Mydra
A vintage German gem with some distinctive melodies, a cool disc.

Pain Of Salvation. Road Salt One
Once again the band manages to surprise and enlight, clearly better than Scarsick but not as appealing as BE. Some songs appear a bit too forced while others just impress with amazing atmospheres. Road Salt is none less than breathtaking.

Richard Andersson's Space Odyssey. Embrace The Galaxy
Neo-classical and pretty solid without impressing.

Sabaton. Primo Victoria
Lots of memorable battle hymns. I love the distinctive bombastic approach.

Sabaton. Coat Of Arms
What a joy to listen to such a great Power Metal album, extremely forceful, brilliantly produced and with delicate epic touches. Midway and Screaming Eagles are my favourite ones.

Sieges Even. Steps
Highly complex but mostly interesting on repeated listening.

Stan Bush. Dream The Dream
Classic Stan Bush, a bit too predictable but nice.

Terry Brock. Diamond Blue
A stellar AOR disc, a sure purchase for fans of Brock and the genre.

Vanden Plas. The Seraphic Clockwork
Solid, technical and well balanced. I don't think these guys are able to release something below "very good".

Wuthering Heights. Salt
Not up there with Far From The Madding Crowd but indeed a very strong album. A superb and rich production gives plenty of room for the bombastic arrangements and catchy lead melodies.

Y&T. Facemelter
A delightful round of Rock music from the old veterans.

First Signal: Saw the video for "The City" and what a killer song. If this Debut by Hess & Ward is anything like the single then we are in for a treat. By all accounts I have checked numerous reviews and all seem to be in an agreement that First Signal is a must to get. So Tommy could this be the AOR release of the year?

I'd rather be saying something positive, but I've listened through this release several times and it just sounds a bit too much like Harry Hess trying too hard to be Harem Scarem circa 1994.
Sometimes you just can't recapture the past.
An album like 'Mood Swings' only ever happens once.

Mood Swings is one hell of a release and was certainly ahead of it's time. My personal favorite.

Perhaps it is not Hess trying to sound like HS but rather prefers that direction. 20 years with one band and was there from the start. Just a thought as to the musical direction that was taken by Hess. However I have not listen to the CD release yet.

Tommy nailed the description of Blind Guardian latest release. I am pretty sure it is going to stay in my CD rotation for a long while.

On the subject of Harem Scarem, that sure looks like an impressive suite of releases from Wounded Bird.
