Playlist - April/May 2008 - Alanna
Truthfully I'm just listening to the same few CDs I was spinning a few months ago with a couple of additions and changes. Nothing earthshaking. I'm just biding my time till the big hitters start coming out like Jorn Lande's newie, Brother Firetribe's newie, Def Leppard's newie, Whitesnake's, Bob Catley, etc. So I'm patiently waiting for the truly great stuff of 2008 to shock and awe me.
CHARON - SONGS FOR THE SINNERS This is still my only piece of Charon thus far... I just can't seem to part with $40 bucks for an import of the other discs even though I love this one so much. JP's voice is agonizingly beautiful - liquid midnight, a dark seducer in the shadows. The music is suitably goth/rock. I love the groove of "Bullet" and the light melancholy of "Air".
LEVERAGE - BLIND FIRE What a terrific release, if a bit uneven after a billion listens... "Don't Touch the Sun" is still the corny favorite in my heart. I only say corny because everyone else that seems to hear it in my vicinity claims it so. But I believe it to be extremely poignant.
BOB CATLEY - WHEN EMPIRES BURN Catley has one of those voices that just begs you to listen to more. You start with one Catley song and before you know it, you've just spun away the past several hours with his voice echoing in your ear.
STEVE LUKATHER - EVER CHANGING TIMES It's an ever changing disc, but has some great tuneage on it. He switches courses so often though that the ride can become a bit bumpy and confusing but you can't deny the quality of the songs.
SONATA ARCTICA - UNIA Yeah I'm still listening to this. And its still all kinds of awesome.
NORTHERN KINGS - NORTHERN KINGS YES I'M STILL LISTENING TO THIS TOO. I just can't get away from "Hello Again" and "Creep".
ROYAL HUNT - COLLISION COURSE Hey! Royal Hunt can make good cds in the 2000s and without DC Cooper. Amazing! It's also marks the best thing that Mark Boals has lent his voice to in ages.
DOKKEN - LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN It's not totally awesome, but there's enough good stuff here to keep a Dokken fan entertained for a bit. And no matter what anyone says, the ballad on here is actually pretty good. Yes it is.
BENEDICTUM - SEASONS OF TRAGEDY I love this female vocalist and their music is pretty kick arse too.

I bought 'LEVERAGE - BLIND FIRE' as soon as i read your review in February, and i`m quite happy about that. It may not be 'the best disc ever' but it's a really good one.
If you liked 'SONGS FOR THE SINNERS' that much, (as I did) I'm sure you'll also love 'Poisonblack - Escapextacy'; give it a try if you're in the right mood and have the time.

YES I do love Excapextacy quite alot. My favorite song on there is "In Lust" (cliche I know). It's wickedly wonderful and I appreciate the recommendation.
I'm glad you liked Leverage. The cd is really good, who knows how many times I've personally listened to it (alot) so that's gotta mean something. It's just very appealing I think. Quite the catchy one.

'Code - The Enemy Within', 'Human Temple - Insomnia' and 'Edge of Forever - Let the Demon Rock N Roll', were also great discoveries for me (thanks to you).
And what was i thinking, recommending 'Excapextacy' to 'The Source' herself ???!!!

BENEDICTUM - SEASONS OF TRAGEDY is solid. Freeman is distinctive among female vocalist, which is what attracted me to the band.
I am going to have to check out the Charon. Leppaluoto did an excellent job with Poisonblack . As much as I liked Escapexstacy, I do have to say Ville Laihiala taking over the vocal duties on Lust Stained Despair took the band to that next level adding that much needed edge yet still maintains haunting overtones of the Gothic landscape when required. Just my opinion of course and the fact I liked much of Sentenced past works when they were together.
There is a releases I do recommend you checking out Alanna, which is Planet Alliance (a stellar cast of musicians including Magnus Karlsson;-) and for something a little different Karelia - Restless (Rock/metal/goth/electronic).

Edge of Forever was a pretty great band and that was their best release by far. Glad to hear you got some mileage out of that one as well as the others you mentioned. Code was good too, I had already forgotten about that!
Little Drummer Boy:
Do check out the Charon! It is superb! Planet Alliance and Karelia on now on my list to check out. Thanks for the recommendations, I actually have not heard those. :D
I also agree about Poisonblack, although a bit of me still pines to hear another PB record with JP on the vox. Ville does an admirable job and brings a whole new twist to the music on "Lust". Maybe the greatest compromise, would be to have both guys singing on there - now that would be something exciting to listen to!

I'm so glad to see someone even knows about 'Planet Alliance', I think it's the most underrated album of 2006 and it's such a shame.
Mike Andersson is amazing on vocals and Magnus Karlsson is awesome as always. If I remember right, there were 2 tracks where Carl-Johan Grimmark exchanged leads with Magnus Karlsson, which was interesting and quite diffrent from what he does in Saviour Machine.

Comments: 245 | | PLANET ALLIANCE is indeed an excellent release! Thank you Drummer for the recommendation. It was a bit pricey but quite worth it. I am shocked and dismayed that I didn't come across it the first time around but am grateful for the kind suggestions.
It's very much in the style of the Allen/Lande releases and is a fluid, mesmerizing piece of work and another huge accomplishment for Karlsson.
I've quite liked Cloudscape in the past but was impressed with the vocals here moreso than in the singer's main band. He has a richer melodic range than anticipated. Quite a gem this one!
Thanks again. :D
