Playlist - November/December 2008 - Steen
Here's what I've been listening to lately while planning an expansion of the site. Soon it will be possible for members to add their own ratings and possibly reviews to those that already exist in a different way than through a comment.
If you have any ideas or suggestions for features you miss on the site be sure to send me a mail or write a comment below to let me know.

EyeFear - The Unseen (Progressive Power Metal)
Solid followup to A world full of grey. If you liked that one be sure to check this out. Great mix of melodic, power and progressive metal.

Bob Catley - Immortal (Melodic Hard Rock)
Superb album. Alanna's review covers it completely.

Hello Madness - Light and life after dusk (Rock)
A very nice surprise from Alejandro Milan, the former keyboard player from Stream of Passion. A full review is on the way.

Marillion - Script for a jester's tear (Progressive Rock)
A sonic experience beyond most of what I have discovered recently. The feeling of something special is in the air when I put this album on and I can't wait to give it more time to sink in.

Kreator - Pleasure to Kill (Thrash/Speed Metal)
Raw, aggressive and not too impressive was my first impression. That was quickly blown away by the second listen as I got on this intense, brutal and insanely fast ride, held on and started noticing the detail I missed first time around. I got the feeling of a younger, wilder sibling of Slayer's Reign in Blood. One word: Extreme!!! (The essential quote from "Harold and Kumar go to white castle")

Unitopia (Progressive Rock)
Very good progressive Rock from Australia. Full review is coming soon.

The Gathering - Home (Atmospheric rock)
I lost track of The Gathering after Nighttime Birds. Decided to check them out again when I found this one very cheap. Home is just wonderful in its relaxed ambient atmosphere when I am in the right mood. One to fall asleep to, but in a good way.

Loreena McKennitt - Book of Secrets
A beautiful album with a completely relaxing atmosphere. I don't know how to categorize it except say that it is not exactly metal, just fantastic music. Dante's Prayer is a favorite at the moment, amazing song.

Magnum - II (AOR)
I found some of the old Magnum albums very cheap and had to check them out. A few songs make an impression and the album is nice and comfortable but lacks some consistency to make it really memorable. It seems unsure of what path to take. Great Adventure opens the door in a most promising way but already by the second song Changes the album is led astray down a less interesting road. There are some great moments along the way, especially in songs like If I could live forever, Firebird and All of my life and they point towards some great potential.

HAUK - To hear the trumpets call EP
Review is coming.

Sacred Dawn (Heavy Metal)
Promising band. Read review.

Metallica - Death Magnetic (Heavy Metal)
Metallica returns to a thrashier direction with mixed results. It is the best Metallica album in a long while but it comes off as too cold, lacking the spirit found in their early works. Some riffs and passages sound way too inspired by what they have done before and I miss some really memorable moments. Broken, Beat & Scarred is a clear favorite.
Sadly the album suffers terribly by being mastered way too loud and it ruins much of my listening pleasure. There is no feeling of dynamics in the sound which clips and distorts beyond belief, especially in the fastest and supposedly most powerful sections which as a result end up feeling flat.
OK album but I tire of it way too quickly.

Kamelot - Dominion
Read review

Neal Morse - Lifeline
Still a fantastic listen. Read the review.

Enuff Z'nuff - Dissonance
The perfect warmup for the Enuff Z'nuff gathering which took place a few days ago. Joni Lynn, Altered States and Roll Away are perfect examples of the unique blend that is Enuff Z'nuff. Read review

Is Lana Lane's recorded output any good?

All I remember about her at Sweden Rock was being very bored for 20 mins then leaving to watch Overkill. Mind you I'm sure you remember even less that that about that particular preformance :)

Hi Steen,
Site expansion sounds exciting;

- It would be nice to add a column in "Album Reviews - Table of contents" to show album rating in the same page.
- Writing reviews and ratings by members are great; creating voting polls might be cool too.
- Right now members can only write a comment under a specific title/page; it would be nice to have topic-free comment section for general opinions, recommendations,...

I see a few Progressive Rock albums in your playlist, If u like prog rock be sure to check out (if u haven't already) Eloy (Ocean I, II and Ra are fantastic).

Hey Stuart,
What I've heard so far (Project Shangri-la) has been good but not fantastic. Still there is something about her voice that says I should give her some more chances so I decided to check out her beginning and bought those two re-releases, which I haven't had time to listen to yet, next month hopefully.
I started warming up to her after her "Covers collection" album which included a very nice cover of Enuff Z'nuff's Innocence.

Hah! The classic Lana Lane concert at Sweden Rock '05. I guess that one will always come back to haunt me... Though I photo-documented the concert extremely well you are absolutely right when you say that I don't recall the intricate details, heh good thing there were some Scotsmen there trying to take care of me. Great whisky-tasting though...
Did you see the bands announced for 2009? Promising!

Hey Dark Lord,
Thanks for the suggestions!
We did actually have the rating column as part of the Album review table of contents at the early days of the site but it was removed for several reasons. Most of all because we urge people to read our reviews before looking at the rating. I added the "Search by rating" as an alternative.

I'll definitely take the forum and polls suggestion into consideration for the future. Could be interesting to have a place where members could start different discussions.

Never heard of Eloy but I've added them to my list of bands to check out. Can they be compared to any other bands?

Heaven and Hell, Europe, Hamerfall, Riot, Motorhead and Amon Amarth? Rather good announcements so far.

My only concern is that all these bands (apart from Riot) have played the festival in the past few years. I'm hoping for some more varied announcements in the next few months.

Fingers crossed for Grave Digger or Virgin Steele, I can't even begin to tell you how amazing that best of that Nina and Mads gave me at MCF is!

Add Dream Theater, Marillion and Forbidden to that list as well. I'm hoping for more surprises but there's a handful of bands I really want to see here.
Virgin Steele would be amazing. You have to check out their Invictus album if you haven't already. One of my absolute favorite albums of all time. And then move on to everything else they have done :) Incredible band.

Eloy is usually compared to bands such as Pink Floyd, Badfinger,Camel,Jane and Yes; but the truth is they have their own distinct kind of prog rock with a mixture of symphonic and space rock vibe.

If I had to pick 2 band as Arjen Lucassen's inspiration, they would be Eloy and Pink Floyd (I'm not sure ofcourse just a guess)

The band has endured several line-up changes, and each album has a different atmosphere; that's why I recommend "Ocean" (1977) for start; an album wich is considered an all time classic in prog communities and one the best conceptual prog rock albums ever. "Ra" (1988) is a lot more accessible and no where near the complexity and greatness of "ocean" but still a fantastic album.
