BBC just leaves me hungry for more. I am having to listen to both back to back just to keep it going. I think 2 is the stronger of the two, which is impressive considering how good the debut was. Glenn Hughes does not hold back at all when it comes to his vocal performance. I think this was some of his best work in a very very long time.

Sad BBC will not be coming out my way for any shows but Joe will be in my neck of the woods in December in support of his Dust Bowl release. A show I will have to see.

Sweden Rock Festival 2011 - Day Four: Destruction, Angel Witch, Rhapsody Of Fire and Ozzy Osbourne
Monday, August 15, 2011
Sad your festivities had to end with Ozzy. He has been on the down side for so long I think of him as the clown of the metal industry. He is gonna kill his own legendary status by continuing down this road. Lord knows he already killed his own dignity. I did not even bother with his last release.

Now I must listen to the immortal vocal god DIO. A true legend and a class act that will always be remembered by the metal world. RIP.

Brian thanks for introducing me to Black Country Communion. I am currently treating my ears to some to some fantastic rock with Black Country Communion 2 and some great blues playing with Joe Bonamassa's "Dust Bowl". Joe is no longer flying under the radar when it comes to the world stage. What a great talent!

You have been pretty quiet for a while. Hope all is well. Like to see some reviews to check out what I have been missing.

Lost In Thought - Opus Arise
Monday, July 18, 2011
I have yet to get my hands on the release since I have yet to see it on the shelves here. However from the few tracks I have listened to I am stoked about getting my hands on this one. Nate Loosemore is a fantastic vocalist. When I first listened to him I immediately thought of Lance King. Funny thing, it is Lance King's record label that is doing the North American distribution.

Triumph - Just a Game / Allied Forces
Monday, July 11, 2011
Edge just did not have the other finesse trademarks of Emmett. When you think about it it was like having 2 bands rolled into one. That was the part many fans could not get past. They judged it for what it did not have rather what it did.

I remembered when I first heard Phil X was to fill the shoes of Emmett I was apprehensive. I really thought that it would be Steve Morse since he had close ties to Triumph at that time and he did have a guest appearance on the previous album, Surveillance, dueling it out with Emmett on "Headed For Nowhere". But after hearing the first single Troublemaker (featured on the Hellraiser 3 soundtrack) I could not wait for the CD release. Phil X contributed to an edger approach that fit the material nicely. And as you said "Gil Moore is just great on vocals".

Shame Gil Moore did not continue on will his works afterwards. Powerful vocalist and solid drummer. People tend to forget that nearly half the hits Triumph had was Gil Moore doing lead vocals and the material was more directed at straight ahead Rock. Edge provided that in spades and ended up being my third favorite album by the band.

Triumph - Just a Game / Allied Forces
Friday, June 24, 2011
Triumph is truly a great band. They have never released a bad album. There has been rumors of the three flirting with entering the studio again, however it has been a while since the re-union and they have not said anything that this will happen. Perhaps not releasing an other album allows us to walk down memory lane and see them as legends. Or on my part great Canadian legends.

Rik Emmett is unquestionably one of Canada's greatest guitar players. Till this day his versatility still wows me with his Classical and Jazz recordings and of course his return to rock with Airtime (2007). Like Steve Morse (whom is my all time favorite) I wonder if he has any musical boundaries when it comes to his playing.

By Triumph not releasing another album (now so late in their careers) I personally think Edge Of Excess was a good note to close that chapter. A Solid Rock Album! Even though Rik did not return for that recording.

Poets Of The Fall - Alchemy Vol 1
Friday, June 17, 2011
I checked out some videos and I really like what I have heard from this band. Your right in saying "dramatic chorus - is the band's weapon of mass persuasion". Love the lyrics to War, and Dreaming Wide Awake just an amazing track. I will be be purchasing this one very soon and probably target Twilight Theater since both of the above noted songs are on that release.

Rhapsody (of Fire) - From Chaos To Eternity
Saturday, June 11, 2011
Triumph & Agony was pretty dull compared to past releases. I thought Frozen Tears was very good as I was seeing them taking a corner and returning to form.

I have gotten this far with this tale so I am guessing I am gonna put it on this list to get. But I am not in a hurry.

Hell - Human Remains
Wednesday, May 11, 2011
I liked the two songs I have listen too. On Earth as it is in Hell is a monster of a track as with Save Us From Those Who Would Save Us. Based on these two songs it reminds me of a little bit of vintage Merciful Fate. However when listening to "Save Us..." I was also felling that vibe when listening to early Annihilator (Alice In Hell, Never Never Land). Raw intensity with precision.

Out on May 13th (Europe) and May 17, 2011 (North America).

Redemption - Snowfall on Judgment Day
Thursday, May 5, 2011
I still have this CD in rotation. I simply can not shelve this one.

However, I eagerly await their new one that (I hope) will be out later this year.

Mike Tramp - Stand Your Ground
Thursday, April 21, 2011
I can not say I have followed Tramp's career after White Lion.

After listening to "Distance" it spelled Radio Single all the way and should see commercial success in North America if pushed aggressively. The Soldier Never Started A War is powerful in statement and the music fits the lyrics/subject like a glove. I could see this track being used in a movie in relation to said subject matter. Perhaps because that inner movie you mentioned immediately hit me. A true and honest song. The only other track I have checked out is "Gotta Get Away" which also screams as a 'single' candidate. Pure and simple Rock and Roll.

I will be on the look out for this CD release.

Essence - Song: "Blood Culture" Album: "Lost in Violence"
Monday, March 28, 2011
Killer track. It also works that they threw in that 12 second bass solo after the guitar.

They also have a 4 song Ep.

After Forever - Emphasis / Who Wants To Live Forever (Single)
Tuesday, March 8, 2011
"kind of magic" good pun.

It is a tall task for any who ventures on covering a Queen song. It is a well done cover, but just does not have the emotional impact the original. Beyond Freddie's conviction to make us believe and hang on every word performed (I get shivers every time I hear Freddie sing "But touch my tears with your lips. Touch my world with your fingertips..."), it is Brian's brilliant song writing. The simplicity of the keys from the very start right to the majestic guitar solo. A perfect arrangement!

I think it's time to pull out A Kind Of Magic!

Steve Morse Band - High Tension Wires / Southern Steel / Coast To Coast
Sunday, February 27, 2011
I can not wait to get these remastered re-issues. I have these on order since it is limited pressing. Steve Morse is my all time favorite guitar player and there are very few guitarist that can compose such diverse music as he can. You nailed it when said "Unlike the shredders - their talent is all in their fingers - Morse's talent is in his head."

What is also great, is his back up. Dave Larue and Van Romaine are amazing talents. When catching them live you can also notice they love what do and no egos. Theses guys are there for each other in there performance.

BTY: I just picked up Dave LaRue's solo CD "Hub City Kid" (1992). Great listen! It is fusion, rock, jazz and funk.

Hi Steen

There is a Cd you may want to check out. The Shadow Theory "Behind the Black Veil". It is one of those you need to sit back and listen to closely. May take a few spins. I was immediately captivated and I am now doing back to back spins getting sucked in to this dark and eerie back drop that the lyrics and music provide. Some very well known musicians in the progressive rock/metal scene. One of which you are familiar with. Devon Graves (Psychotic Waltz).

Blind Guardian - At The Edge Of Time
Friday, February 11, 2011
This is a great release. Made my personal Top 10 for 2010.

Amplifier - Octopus
Friday, February 11, 2011
I check out a couple of the songs, such as Octopus, and one definitely would need to be in a more laid back mood to really capture the little nuances that the songs have to offer (basing this of course from a few songs that I managed to check out). I will be getting this one.

Various Artists - My favorite workout music lately!
Thursday, January 13, 2011
I have to say, I did not see a list of work out tunes coming.

Interesting list. I chuckled at "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner". It is quite appropriate. So are you running marathons.

I do have to say I am more of a classic traditionalist when I comes to my work outs. Generally the Rock 4 soundtrack. Some good old Survivor tunes and some Vince Dicola. Transformers OST with Stan Bush, NRG and Spector General (Kick Axe). I also enjoy Black Sabbath (dio era) when pumping weights (when I did). "I" and "The Mob Rules" gets that adrenaline pumping.

Hi Brian.

Thought I forward a recommend your way. Joe Bonamassa solo CD "The Ballad Of John Henry" (2009). Again Kevin Shirley is at the production helm and mixing. There are a few surprises on this CD song wise but they are a welcomed addition to the overall vibe of this release.

Savatage was such an amazing band. Edge Of Thorns such an amazing release. The term magical is correct. The addition of Zak Stevens taking the lead vocal duties and Chris Oliva was finally being widely recognized as one of elite guitarist in the industry.

We could call Disturbed a guilty pleasure in the world of metal. They nailed down the art of writing hooks and perform their craft quite well. Combined with David Draiman's very distinct vocals one can not help going back time and time again. Another band that has a similar sound that leans towards the Nu-metal that I enjoy is Five Finger Death Punch's "War Is The Answer".

BG's latest at this point could very well be slotted in my top ten for 2010.

I just picked up the KISKE/SOMERVILLE and thus far I am pleased with the material. I have not gotten a chance to listen to the whole CD as of yet.

FS is a very nice slab of AOR Rock. This City is a excellent single but I must say "When You Believe" has become one of my favorites. Goodbye to the Good Times is another track I con not stop listening to. That is a very infectious track (not that there isn't plenty of that already on the CD). The first time I listened to that track I was driving along and I honestly thought (until it hit the chorus) it may be JLT. I should not be looking at my MP3 player while driving:-) There are a few bumps on this release and it has to do more with the consistency of the material written. I could have done without the songs "Feels Like Love This Time" "Part Of Me" and "When November Falls". I like variety but I feel as though songs are more filler. The compositions of those songs just do not stand up to the rest of the release.

Wyvern - The Red Flame of Pain
Saturday, September 25, 2010
I have checked out a couple of songs and I have to say I am not to impressed at all. I am not one to give this a 1 rating as I have listened to worse. Musically there is talent there. They play better than I do. Song wise, well I am not sure where all those passages are running, the vocalist is bad and the lyrics are...painful. I checked out the Lyrics for "Adolescent Sex" and it wants me to take my Fender and beat them with it. But that may end up creating controversy and I would be "Behind Bars". Though I am sure that would be a more worthy cause. I checked out their website and there seems to be more resent recordings. A "little" better musically but I still could not sit through it. How do you try to cover up bad vocals? You add more reverb and chorus!? Forget compression. Of course that won't work. It just ended up with vocals blending into each other. Check it out (if you have nothing else better to do of course).

Unfortunately there are a couple other bands with the same band name. One from Egypt (fairly decent and one I want to check out a little more closely) and a female fronted band from Asia (much better than the atrocity from Italy). With the same name sake it may be hard for positive exposure internationally via the internet since this band from Italy are the first hits on web searches.

Wyvern - The Red Flame of Pain

Mood Swings is one hell of a release and was certainly ahead of it's time. My personal favorite.

Perhaps it is not Hess trying to sound like HS but rather prefers that direction. 20 years with one band and was there from the start. Just a thought as to the musical direction that was taken by Hess. However I have not listen to the CD release yet.

Tommy nailed the description of Blind Guardian latest release. I am pretty sure it is going to stay in my CD rotation for a long while.

First Signal: Saw the video for "The City" and what a killer song. If this Debut by Hess & Ward is anything like the single then we are in for a treat. By all accounts I have checked numerous reviews and all seem to be in an agreement that First Signal is a must to get. So Tommy could this be the AOR release of the year?

Fates Warning's "Spector Within" very much like "Night On Brocken". "Awaken the Guardian" is superb seeing strong progressive elements which is the last release John Arch would contribute. I still find "No Exit" to be my favorite with the debut of Ray Alder as Arch's replacement. Very Progressive yet arguably their heaviest. the 21 minute epic "The Ivory Gate of Dreams" is brilliant.

Vanden Plas "The Seraphic Clockwork" is solid. I was sold on it from first listen. I really enjoy their approach to prog. Intricate but never overwhelmed. Very much like Threshold's approach to progressive rock/metal.

I just purchased Obsidian Conspiracy and thus far it is solid. Though I am going to have to give it more time. "Dead heart in a dead world" appears to be still my fav of the Nevermore releases.

You are right about Masterplan. It is better than the last release. Jorn adds that emotional edge that the intern vocalist seamed to be lacking on the 3rd release. Though something is missing. I find myself not hearing high energy hooks. I think that is what made the debut have so much impact.

Magica... :-)

Dio - RevelationZ Top 20 Dio Tracks - A Tribute
Sunday, June 6, 2010
Good list...one that I am sure was difficult to compile. Many of the songs would enter my 20. However one glaring omission, in my opinion, is The Mob Rules.

I would have also considered a track off the Strange Highways release (Just Giver Her The Gun) . There is also the "Elf" era with songs like Never More and Wonderworld.

Either way with such an long and successful career he has forever left his mark not just in Metal but in music in general. A legacy that will continue to influence people for many, many years to come.

I would also like to give honourable mention to not just one song off a Dio release but for Dio's great story telling. The concept album Magica.

Good to hear Rhapsody is back on track.

Cains Offering is still on my rotation and I have to make an amendment to my best of 2009 and slot it in the top ten.

I checked out the new Asia single and it is vintage. I am excited to hear the complete release. Steen, they have a pretty deep catalog. Omega making this their 12th studio release. Not to mention they have some live releases and a 2 archive cd's containing demo's and previously unreleased material. The only one I do not have is their release from 1999 "Rare", which is a suited title since I have not seen this one.

I enjoyed the Crazy Lixx. I consider it a guilty pleasure. You can also hear some Motley Crue in the mix as well. Good music to work. 6.5

Another in the whole hair band/glam revival that has taken place is Steel Panther "Feel the Steel". A fun CD. Though I do have to ask myself do these guys take themselves seriously. It is a parody on the whole Glam scene of the mid to late 80's (can you say Poison).

Blaze Bayley - Promise And Terror
Tuesday, March 23, 2010
I can not wait till I get my hands on this one. Though I may end up waiting a bit for it since this is on his own label. Thus far his solo career has been good. 5 releases in and he has not released a dud yet. Excellent vocalist with a magnificent group of musicians.

Rick Springfield. Venus In Overdrive is a solid release. It surprised me when I got it early last year. There are some good rocking tunes on this one. I have not scene the DVD but he put on a good show when he came to Vancouver doing an out doors concert. I tell yeah the Cougars were prowling about that night, but I manage to get out of there alive.

I would have to agree that The Black Halo is Kamelot's best release. Brilliant!

Dream Evil. In The Night is rather boring or should I say cookie cutter formulation and tried to play it safe. With out the leadership and writing skills of Fredrick Nordstrom this band could be in trouble.

Various Artists - Steen's Favorite Albums of 2009
Monday, January 11, 2010
Steen you have a pretty well rounded top 10...14. A number of your pick made my top list for 2009. DT, W.E.T. and of course my number 1 pick Redemption. Cain's Offering a excellent release as well though it did not make my top 10 but is an enjoyable release to listen to.

Black and White World made for my favorite single release. Can not go wrong with Wither as the great "can not help but sing this song in the car" release (of course having disc three to practice vocals on is also a reminder why JL is such a sought out studio singer). It has that same emotional hook that is right there with Hollow Years of the Falling Into Infinity release.

@ Craig: Thanks for the heads up on the new Overkill. Over the years they have been fairly consistent with bring out solid material. Their biggest hick-up was I Hear Black (the follow up to Horrorscope) but even then it still had some redeeming qualities to it. Personally W.F.O. is still my favorite.

Blackmore´s Night - Winter Carols

House of Lords - Cartesian Dreams

For James Christian and HOL they should not have Mark Baker on for another project writing on the whole CD. They were doing just fine on the last two releases. Bangin', Saved by Rock are dull and I definitely have to say nothing Repo Man is the one song I could not listen through again. Those three in particular sucks the life out of the CD. I found the lyrics in Born To Be My Baby belonged to bands like Cinderella and Poison in the early years of glam....hmmmm cheese comes to mind. Funny thing though HOL did songs like that in the early years as well such as Slip Of The Tongue and Laydown Staydown but were done in a fashion that was oozing super charged sexuality with out sounding ridiculous lyrically. The bridge in Born To is amateur, the cliche phrases used in the verses hurt and the chorus is *groan*. To bad really because musically it rocked.

As for The Bigger They Come I liked the direction of the song. Did it fit the direction of the CD not really but then again neither did Repo Man and that one I definitely did not like. I think they could have added another min 1/2 to The Bigger They Come to flesh out the story (sounds unresolved) and composed few musical twists to pull us in. Stronger Intro, a strong compositional break after the Chorus's (extra 12 beats) and a stronger use of keys to make the movement grand after the second Chorus as a compliment going into Bell's solo. If done right those passages could be used in the final chorus.

Joanna does have a good story but alas I was bored with the music.

With the Euro release there is a bonus track that should should have been in place of Repo Man for the North American so we did not have to endure trying to listen to it the first time. The Train is a decent closer.

Highlights, are the tracks I have not mentioned here. Personal favorite is Never Never Look Back. Killer!!!!!!!!

I just started listing to "Mindkey" and am very pleased with my shot in the dark purchase. This the bands second release and new vocalist Fierro sounds like a mix between Lande and Allen (perhaps Magnus Karrlson should work with vocalist). Fierro's vocals are a beautiful fit for the band. Mindkey has ensured that songs are balanced where every instrument including vocals plays a vital role to the big picture of properly structured song writing (hence the songs become equally as important as the technical instrumental passages). It should be also noted that the vocal harmonies are done masterfully as well with Englund having a guest appearance for the song Graveheart. Dennis Ward engineered and mixed this release so everyone can be guaranteed the sound is crystal clear. Definitely for fans of earlier Dream Theater, Symphony X and Andromeda. It's prog with emotion and is accessible for the casual listener of this genre to enjoy. 8.5/10

The latest Pathosray is a solid release. But I preferred their first release. Perhaps with some more listens I will be able to get more into this one.

Spherical Universe (France) is a good slab of progressive metal but unfortunately gets lumped in with the most Prog bands. The only thing that really stands out for me are some of the symphonic passages that appears systematically through out the Lp.

I have found a band that I highly recommend you checking out.

Cloudscape: Global Drama

Vocalist Mike Andersson who worked with Magnus on Planet Alliance is the lead vocalist for this band. This is their latest release (2008). It is very diverse and there are no fillers with this. Solid!!!! I can almost guarantee this would stay in rotation for some time. For fans of Kamelot, Masterplan and Evergrey.

Dream Theater - Black Clouds And Silver Linings
Monday, July 20, 2009
OK...I think something must be said about Kevin Moore. KM left the band due to a personal change in musical direction. The obvious change in direction was when he wrote Space-Dye Vest for the Awake release. KM choose a direction that would not fit DT with the sound at the time let alone anything after that. KM is a fantastic musician and writer and his passion lies with Ambient Jazz Fusion (his project "Chroma Key"), hence the reason he works so well with Mathaos (Fates Warning). Try to imagine DT as an ambient prog 'rock' outfit. I can't. KM's musical direction just did not fit with the rest of the band as a whole. It was not meant to be.

JR has done a fantastic job with DT and I think Sandra's point about Scenes was dead on since that release is critically acclaimed and so will this one.

With that being said DT is the most talked about prog metal outfit in the world to this day and the fact that we are disusing which DT keys made their sound since their first release in 1989 is a testament to their dedication and promise to themselves. Not formulate their music to past success but remain true to themselves as passionate artists. And that is the key to their success as they remain innovators not imitators.

So this great debate shall continue :-)

WASP: The Headless Children is a great release and is among my favorites (but not the best). Chris Holmes's axe work excellent and probably the best he has done with the band. However, the Crimson Idol is still tops in my books.

They are 2 very different release writing wise. Though the Axe work on Headless Children is superior (CH left the band after the Headless Children) the Crimson Idol's writing overall for this concept piece is powered by raw emotion from start to finish and is what makes this WASP's finest achievement.

Well looks like I have discovered something new definitely that should be checked out. It is a band called XYSTUS. Not sure if you have heard of them. The release I picked up is called Equilibrio which basically is a theatrical production infusing Metal and traditional theatrical/musical style. Though it does not have as many vocalists as Arjen's last monster cast, but it does involve more than 130 people in the production and premiered in the Netherlands. This sounds like a Broadway musical on steroids. It was a nice treat for me since I also like going to the theater to see musicals. Featured vocalists are Simone Simons (Epica; like I had to announce that), Bas Dolmans (Xystus), George Oosthoek (Orphanage) and a couple of renowned Dutch theater vocalist. Now keep in mind Sensory has released the studio recording of "Equilibrio", which features key scenes from the opera, and far as I know no double CD has yet been released. However, the DVD of the production is available.

Unfortunately this is one musical that I doubt will hit the Canadian West Coast. Shame!

Shame!

Jimi Jamison's "Crossroad Moments" is solid. It is also interesting to listen to the evolution of Peterik's writing over the years. I really appreciate the fact that he (over the past decade) tries to diversify the songs keep things fresh and yet maintains his Stylistic sound that was achieved in the late 70's & 80's. This new one is so much better than REACH (flat and uninspired). To date I still prefer his 1st solo release "When Love Comes Down". Though nothing can beat "Vital Signs" or "To Hot To Sleep".

Blaze's latest effort "The Man Who Would Not Die" is a must get for metal fans in general. It is his heaviest to date.

Autograph - Sign In Please

I have not listened to this one in years, but the first 7 tracks can still be rehearsed in my head. Another one of those great party Lps of the 80's. All three "Steves" in the band had excellent chemistry. I would have to agree with 'My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Isn't Me' being a huge mistake on RCA part for refusing to release it as a single.

Surprisingly they still had 4 studio releases (The Buzz featured an entire line up change with only Plunk as an original) and 2 additional releases from the vaults from material that never saw the light of day with RCA and or Epic. This is one of those bands that could never recover from the grunge era.

R.I.P Steven Isham died on Dec 09 2008.

Bob Catley - Immortal
Saturday, November 22, 2008
Your review is quite accurate and it is a masterpiece. When I first pick this up I did not know who was doing the penning for it. Then I slapped it in the Car CD player I was surprised when I heard the Karlsson trademarks all over the first track. But is was not his guitar playing or so I thought. So I listened on and it was bugging me so of course I am driving along and pulling out the sleeve so I can find the writing credits (not exactly safe...but I had to know). After listening to the CD I have to say this is not a Catley release. It is another Magnus release. I also think that Denis Ward (production and mixing) and Magnus make for an excellent team, not to mention having Ward handling the bulk of the axe duties was an interesting move.

Magnus has constantly known how to ensure the vocalist shines never making the music over indulgent and pompous. He puts the stories to be told first and then scores the instrumental passages to add emphasis as we think about the messages being told.

Magnus has become one of my personal favorite writers in the industry. His songs are almost always accessible to the listener and I am never left feeling overwhelmed by convoluted pompous technical flash that so many other writers tend to fall victim to.

I was introduced to them by Chance! Actually it was all Dream Theaters fault. After getting Images and Words I looked for more progressive bands of the like for me to get my hands on. Until one day I went into a small import store (now closed) and stumbled upon it. That is also when I bought my first Iced Earth "tape" (NOTSR).

Talking about which. I am now off to the IE concert! Barlow is BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a travesty about Baker. I have been a fan of the band since the first debut release back in 1992. This is one instance where I hope that the members of SG does not release another CD in the future under this name. It just would not be the same.

Rest In Piece Mike.

From the Inside - Interview with Danny Vaughn
Tuesday, October 14, 2008
I was going to recommend VISIONS to you Alanna but it seems you are ahead of the game.

I listen to this CD and it is excellent slab of AOR rock. Kind of reminds me of a cross of Kansas (mid 80's) and Survivor. JB's guitar work is great. I was not that Familiar with Danny Vaughn but I am now sure to check out his past recordings.

Brother Firetribe - Heart Full Of Fire
Saturday, June 14, 2008
I recently bought the first and I love it. By all accounts every review I have read is saying this even better and if this is so then it could be a candidate for best release of the year! The only song I have heard in full so far is the unbelievable cover of Mike Reno's "Chasing The Angels" (Iron Eagle 2 soundtrack). Wow what a magnificent cover!

Whitecross - Ninteen Eighty Seven (2005 ReRecording)
Saturday, June 14, 2008
Barren Cross is my favorite "Christian band" out there (though I do not believe they have released anything since Rattle Your Cage). STATE OF CONTROL and ATOMIC ARENA are great releases.

LEVERAGE - BLIND FIRE was indeed a fine release. Though I do have to say my favorite here is Shadow In The Rain.

BENEDICTUM - SEASONS OF TRAGEDY is solid. Freeman is distinctive among female vocalist, which is what attracted me to the band.

I am going to have to check out the Charon. Leppaluoto did an excellent job with Poisonblack . As much as I liked Escapexstacy, I do have to say Ville Laihiala taking over the vocal duties on Lust Stained Despair took the band to that next level adding that much needed edge yet still maintains haunting overtones of the Gothic landscape when required. Just my opinion of course and the fact I liked much of Sentenced past works when they were together.

There is a releases I do recommend you checking out Alanna, which is Planet Alliance (a stellar cast of musicians including Magnus Karlsson;-) and for something a little different Karelia - Restless (Rock/metal/goth/electronic).

Loverboy - Just Getting Started
Sunday, April 6, 2008
Definitely a solid release by one of Canada's premier AOR Rock outfits from the 80's. By no means would I rate this as a 9 but it certainly got my attention. 8/10

Loverboy - Just Getting Started
Friday, March 21, 2008
Something I definitely have to get! I did not know they released one last year.

Get Loverboy "Big Ones" or "Classics" greats hits releases. You can't go wrong. Perhaps you will hear some of the influence that they had on Harem Scarem :-)

Roger Staffelbach's Angel of Eden - The End of Never
Friday, March 21, 2008
Reminiscent of Yngwie Malmsteen is an understatement. Though the musicianship is superb the CD over all is overindulgent and extremely redundant. Carsten Schulz did have a hard time with the songs, but I found it most prevalent on (of all songs) "You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget". There is a richness that Marc Boals had in the recording as he executed expression all at the right moments. This is just is not heard when Schultz did it. I am certainly not saying Schults because he can, it just requires an exceptionally gifted vocalist to keep up. Not to many and I think the majority worked with Malmsteen.

Meldrum - Blowin´ Up the Machine
Wednesday, June 20, 2007
I picked this up, and along with you I was disappointed. Perhaps it will grow on me...like fungus. I expected way more from the get go. Perhaps the strong writing developed with Phantom Blue are to remain in the past. Shame because I though PB was pretty good especially their debut release so many years ago.

Pride of Lions - The Roaring of Dreams
Saturday, May 19, 2007
This is one mind blowing CD for AOR music. I can honestly say I accually like this one more than the Destiny Stone release. My Fav. song at the moment would have to be Language Of The Heart. I can not get it out of my head. JP & TH's vocals duties are unbelievable and they mix so well. There is so much conviction in there performances and could very well be their best yet. What also helps edge out destiny stone is the rest of the band, the one solid line up makes for a more consistant sound (destiny had a lot of different muscians playing on it from song to song leaving me with the feeling that there was a compilation of various artist ie thee 2 different drummers).

I can honestly say I have not listened to a AOR rock release this soulfull since JJ released When Love Comes Down (funny how that worked out with the Survivor connection). Though I primarily listen to bands like Iron Maiden, Nightwish, Kamelot, Vaniching Point, 'Tage, DT and Redemption (you get the Idea) POL's The Roaring of Dreams will stay in the MIX for a long while.

8.5 it is

I forgot that Tage's GB. It is definately a Strong Contender for 89 but I would still go with Blue Murder. It can be somewhat compared to Whitesnake's self titled since he played the Axe for that release and penned much of the music (he had nothing to do with "Here I Go Again"). Sykes took the writing to the next level and delivered one hard hitting power house of a release. The line up for Blue Murder consisted of John Sykes playing the Axe and the Vocals (and what a job he did at that), Bassist Extraordinaire Tony Franklin and the Power of Carmine Appice on the Drums.

If you get your hands on it, don't let it go. Trust me you'll like it. Weather it will edge out 'Tage its hard to say (I am a 'Tage fan).

Various Artists - Year in Review 2006 - The Best and Worst
Sunday, January 28, 2007
Well I think you knew this was coming up with the Big Disappointment of 2006 regarding Maiden. Yeah I do agree that it was a disappointment since the expectations were so damn high. However, since that time the CD has grown on me, but is by no way their best on writing standpoint. The direction does seem to get lost from time to time especially with the more Epic tracks and there is a lack of consistency with the writing of strong hooks that pulls in the listener. I think that's why there is no clear-cut stand out songs that screams classic.

With that said the Mix on this release was great, Musicianship is up to par for maiden, and Bruce sounds great (after all these years, he's losing a bit but he is still among the best ...). Actually Nicko's work on the skins is outstanding which is the clear winner here.

So In my opinion AMOLAD overall is not on par with many of their greats. But, it is nothing like their worst (the 90's were not to consistent for them from release to release). I would still give this release a 7 rating. So Let me take some of the heat off of you, and say the most brilliant writing they have ever done on any single release would have to be.... drum roll...X-FACTOR.

As for the best of 2006:

Tony O'Hora - Escape into the Sun; this one really did not get the recognition that it should have. The combinations of the lush melodies and strong hooks simply make this CD soar with waves of emotions that is hard to shake! I just love the usage of the soft keys contrasting with the heavy guitar work. Karlsson is one fine writer. Admittedly, I was not really familiar with Tony's days with 'Mantis but I am curious to see if he is as strong vocally (or is it just Karlsson that can pull the best from a vocalist).

House of Lords - World Upside Down; Good CD! Killer Guitar work as you noted and Christian sounds almost as good as he did more than a decade and a half ago. However I still prefer the first two. Looking for Strange is still one of my favorite songs done by HOL which I think is some of Christian's finest moments with his vocal prowess.

Luca Turilli's Dreamquest; I only hope to hear more from this mysterious singer. Perhaps this is a marketing ploy for releases in the future. All I know I will be parching more of the Dreamquest in the future if he should chose to continue with this direction.

Winger 4; It's not as good as Pull. But it is by no means bad. I still have to give this one more time since I only got it recently.

Virgin Steel - Visions Of Eden; I got this some time ago and I am having a hard time getting into this one. I am not sure what it is. Perhaps this CD doesn't offer something different. It is epic. This could have perhaps used in a different fashion. Perhaps adding a different vocalist (or two) in order to offer a contrast within his story. Not this is an original idea (gee how many bands have done this) but it could have elevated this concept piece.

Poisonblack; I definitely want to get this CD and the previous one (I am having a difficult time finding it here). I have only listened to a couple tracks off of each.

Circle 2 Circle: Really can't go wrong with anything related to 'Tage. Wake of Magellan is still my favorite release with Zac. As a matter of fact Wake is still my Favorite 'Tage release to date. Might be on my top 10 of all time.

Blind Guardian; Fly after a while got on my nerves. Stranger Me is what sold me. I just love the variety they serve up with this release. Great Party songs, in a metallic bard like fashion:) Now what be really cool if Iced Earth and Blind Guarian would tour together coming to my corner of the world and then do an encore as Demons and Wizards. I think Tim Owens would have a problem with that..

As for VH the only one who has ever seamed to have any sense what so ever is Michael Anthony. He should ditch anything VH related and take a chance at starting his own band.

Jimi Jamison will prolly continue his solo career. Hopefully with Kenny Mims, who seams to collaborate quite well with him.

Various Artists - Playlist - September/October 2006

DT's I&W is a masterpiece.

As for AMOLAD, Musicianship is at it finest. The Trio of guitars sound wonderfull as the mix really distinguishes each style of the individual guitarist and yet melds together perfectly. I found this CD was far more consistant bring this aspect together than the two previous and as soon as Steve is added in...well enough said. As for Bruce, well you simply can't go wrong when he is at the helm. Nicko does sound phenomenal on this release. The lyrics are good as well. With that being said there is one major flaw that puts the previous releases ahead of this one. That defining song or two that says "Classic". Each of the past releases has that defining song(s)like Number Of The Beast, Run To The Hills, Aces High, Waisted Years, The Evil That Men Do, Fear Of The Dark, the Wicker Man, etc...you get the idea. It is the hook that pulls us in, as that complete memorable moment that we try to sing to when Maiden comes rolling into town. I find that that this release is missing that staple. I will play the CD right through and enjoy it with all of its intricate weaving. But its like having a holiday dinner that is missing the dessert. Its Just not complete.

Kamelot - The Black Halo
Tuesday, August 22, 2006
I would not say so much it sounding like DT except on the Abondoned song which has the softness that DT accomplished in the lighter moments of "Scenes From A Momorie" release. However many if the powerful guitar riffs and rythem equaled with the emotinal vocals (Khan did an outstanding job) can be compared to Queensryche. Such passages are in the verses and the bridge after the 2nd chorus of "March of Miphisto". Another Great example is in "the Pain" starting at 0:50 when that Guitar kicks in with the intermitant Puches from the Rhythem section not to mention what was going on in the solo. Musically I would say it could be compaired with the critically acclaimed "OMC I". "Moonlight" and "Memento Mori" seems to have passages little more on the experimental side of "EMPIRE". I must also say that at 7:23 of "Memento Mori", it has that strong DT feel once again from "Scenes From A Momorie". Thoughs are a few examples. I do not feel Kamelot are ripping off these bands at all, they are simply adding elements and been given comparisons to innovators in the music industry. Since they have been given a comparison to bands of such high calibure outside of the "power metal" genre (yet still being catergorized as such) they must being doing something right. Kamelot has done a good job of mixing varied elements of the Metal sub-genres, which I think has opened the doors to a broader listening audience. The Only problematic areas which I noted was the mixing of the background vocals on March Of Mephisto could have been better giving the chorus more dynamics and little areas where I feel the symphonic passages were a little misplaced. Overall I would rate this offering a little higher. But lets face it Very Good to Outstanding, as an average, is a worthing rating for any band.

Luca Turilli's Dreamquest - Lost Horizons
Monday, August 7, 2006
I think your review is dead on. I pick this up a couple of days after I read your comments on your play list, courious of this mysterious vocalist that could give Tarja a run for her money. After I heard the first track I thought this vocalist "myst" is the exact replacement needed in Nightwish. And perhaps could raise the bar even higher to separate them further from the rest of the pack of bands that are trying to emulate their sound. I must say she could very well be the best female vocalist in this industry. Which says a lot since I am a fan of Nightwish and Edenbridge.

On with the rest, I like the direction Turilli took with this project and should be hailed for his accomplishment. It is a refreshing pace from the epic Symphonic Power Metal that has been done in the past. The major difference with the writing is that the music is pulled back as a atmospheric backdrop to let the vocalist shine and then brought back upfront with all it's marvel when she is not. The "mainstream media" should lay off take it for what it really is. I would be frustrated if under the Rhapsody band name, but it is Dreamquest and should be recognized for it's merits as a separate entity. This is no different than the penned projects of Arjen (it's just expected from from Arjen to try new ideas).

Metal Church - A Light In The Dark
Friday, August 4, 2006
I went out and bought this over the weekend and it is sold. A little more Variety would have been good but I can not complain as these the "name" has survived the years dispite the line up changes. I must say the Rhythem section is excellent. Jeff Plate is a nice addition and definately hear his signature style that he adopted when playing with Savatage which is most notable when playing in those bridges when the bass commands your attention.

6.5/10

Speaking of Savatage with all the members doing their own thing I wonder if they will ever release another. They have not officially called it quits. Plate with MC, Olivia with Pain, Caffery with everyone else, and Middleton doing more prodution work these days; could this be it for Savatage?

Survivor - Reach
Saturday, July 15, 2006
MSG meets Survivor. Nothing against RM but can you here him singing Eye... or Can't Hold Back? How bout the Search is Over (excuse the pun)?

So now they are looking at releasing another in 2007. I guess it is a wait and see. In my opinion they sould abandon the Survivor name and start fresh.

Based on this release I think it is best JJ co-writes with Kenny Mims again.

Survivor - Reach
Thursday, July 13, 2006
Well I finally got this CD and I have mixed feelings with this one. It is definately does not have the intensity of their other releases.

First off I find the production/mix somewhat lost. In the past the mix was much more vibrant. I think the guitars get lost at times and not brought up front enough during the solos.

There are definately to many ballads here and no matter how each can hold its own to have this many on one CD just puts me to sleep. The only one of these ballads I could listen to with care and attention, which is Seconds Away. Excellent song and sould be released as a single.

As for FS singing, well I am enot sold. The 3rd track sould not have been included in the recording. As for track 10 I accually liked it. Would have prefered JJ to sing this but FS faired well on this. At times I think Rick Emmit sould have been the guest artist to sing and throw in some dueling guitars (I get goose bumps thinkin about it). I just found in certain spots FS sounded a little like Emmit. Perhaps JJ did not sing these 2 tracks cause Dave co-wrote these songs.

Over all this is not a bad release as JJ's voice is in fine form and the musician ship is great. But the song selection is week and the Mix could have been better. and this release does have its moments but after 18 years waiting for another I can't help but think they have far more to offer. Its almost seems they have lost that Eye of the Tiger. I hope they find it again or they will have lost me...much in the way I stopped listening to Journey.

5.5/10

Survivor - Reach
Friday, May 5, 2006
Being that I am a huge Survivor fan I will pick this one up. Getting FS to Sing 2 of the songs is a bit puzzling, though I guess I have to hear it. Though I have not listened to it yet I can suspect some the Rockers could be missing because of the absence of JP who's Pride of Lions CDs diffinately offers some killer tracks. To some degree I was hoping Kenny M. (Jimmy's co-writer on his solos) would also be taking part in the song writing department. I am just hoping that I am not as disappointed in all the Ballads as I was on Journey's "Arrival".

Talking about JP have you listened to his new solo release away from Pride of Lions.

Stride - Band Information
Friday, March 24, 2006
Who ever does not have Stride's "Imagine" should get this one. It an excellent mix of progressive Rock and Metal bringing forth the best of both worlds. This is innovative and well thought out.

When I first picked this up I though yeah..this is a good CD. As I listened to it more & more it only got better (I keep on finding new things with each listen).

9/10

Iron Maiden - The X Factor
Friday, March 17, 2006
when Bruce left, I was shocked. The end of an era. Who couple possible replace him. I recalled all the rumours around the industry of who will fill his shoes. Kiske was one that I recall being the strongest speculated replacement.

Blaze who!?

Tommy pretty much summed it up in this review. 9.5/10 for me as well.

Too bad the one to follow was so painful. And it had nothing to do with Blazes vocals. No one could have saved Virtual.

No one can deny that Bruce is the frontman for Iron Maiden, but I do have to say that if he had not left for his solo career this great achievement would not have come to be. Blaze was amazing and sould be given praise for his great work it.

I must add Blaze's solo releases are very good as well especially "The 10th Dimension". Fantastic!

Various Artists - Hashman´s Favorite Albums of 2005
Saturday, February 11, 2006
Interesting list. I am Familiar with most of the bands mentioned. The James Labrie is one heavy release and is definatley not sounding like DT.

I was also quite impressed with Stride. Gary Belin's vocals are great and like the stylistic changes that he does from song to song. This is quite evident in Face the Day. Another Aspect is the Length of the songs. I find with this genre to many bands have that 7 1/2 minute average on a release, were as Strise manages to cut that average down keeping the listener attentive from song to song. One other aspect I found was the matterial is far more accessable with their hooks and once again duration of the songs. They have abetter chance at air play than most. I hope this band will be around for a while.

Lunatica - Fables & Dreams
Tuesday, February 7, 2006
Well I picked this one up and I had a hard time getting into this one. Its not the CD is bad as the musicianship is good technically wise but the song writing is typical of its genre and borrows far to many formulas. You are right that they played it safe but it killed this release as they offered nothing unique. Nightwish has mastered this genre but they contiously offers something different, that is why NW are at the top and the others such as Lunatica will remain in the shadows.

And "the spell" does hurt to listen to.

Their back up vocals just doesn't cut it for me either. I simply do not think he's strong enough to hit the notes that is required of him. This is clear in "Fables and Dreams" as it is to strained when he tries to hit the upper range notes.

One aspect I hope in the future, if they should release another, is to write inaccordance to Andrea's voice. But that might require re-inventing themselves.

Yngwie Malmsteen - Interview with Yngwie
Wednesday, January 25, 2006
1. YJM is a great great Guitar player which no one can deny (regardless of who plays faster cause once you hit 170bpm and pull off 32nd notes to most its jaw dropping). He has made his mark in the industry amoung the rest of the guitar gods, influencing countless talent. M. Romeo (Symphony X), S. Forte (Adagio) and E. Ravn (Wuthering Heights) to name a few. When you hear these guys PLAY you think YJM. "trademark"

2. I can not believe this has been going on since 2002.

3. YJM did start off sounding like a jerk but he did say "thank you very much" at the end. It must have been Michael bringing him back down to earth...If it were me I would have called Steve Morse

W.A.S.P. - The Neon God - Part One - The Rise
Saturday, January 21, 2006
Excellent release, though I do not find it has that same intensity as "The Crimson Idol". Perhaps I found myself expecting he would outdo the previous. 7.5 for this one.

W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol - Double Remastered Edition

This is Blackie's greatest achievement. I would have to agree with you on every point except "The Great Misconceptions of Me" would have to be my fave on this one. This is one hell of a closer.

Yeap...Progg Metal release of the year.

Vision Divine - Stream of Consciousness
Wednesday, January 11, 2006
Good Article. Until I read it this past Sunday I never heard of these guys. So upon reading this I decided to get this one. I walked into my favorite Import stort and ask the owner "do you have VD". Of course I got a funny look (I had to ask..haha). I think the only reason I was not tossed out is that I am a regular customer. So I picked up this one and I agree with your rating of this release but for different reasons. I think one of the things that bugged me was the sounds of knocking/banging and the odd blurb from the main character of the story. Though important I just cant get passed it. It's like it disrupted the flow. Never the less it is a fantastic release and I can not wait till the new one is available here.

Iron Maiden - No prayer for the dying
Thursday, December 8, 2005
Prolly the weekest recording in the BD era. It may be weak for maiden but it still stands up as a good release 6/10.

BD and AS did great things during their solo outing and came back to maiden refreshed.

Iced Earth - Night Of The Stormrider
Wednesday, November 30, 2005
This is without a doubt the most intence release from IE. Right from the opener to the very end.

9/10

Redemption - The Fullness Of Time
Sunday, October 9, 2005
After reading the review I went to my fav import store to pick it up and all I can say is...WOW! I've listened to it continuously and every couple of listens I find something new that I missed before. The arrangements are outstanding and is such an emotionally driven recording I can not stop listening.
In a year of many great progg releases (DT, Shadow Gallery to name a couple) this is hard to beat.

Whitesnake - Whitesnake
Friday, October 7, 2005
Could be the best "arena rock" release of al time, which is impossible to let go of. Brings back great memories. Killer line up of musicians and Coverdale at his very best. Dont Turn Away is the one I could do without. 8/10

I am interested in seeing a review on Blue Murder.

PainmuseuM - Metal For Life
Sunday, August 7, 2005
Old school sound with modern technology. We should also not forget Roy Z. contributions on the great mix (good muscian and producer as well).

This is what mosh-pits were intended for...pure metal at its best.

Dio - Strange Highways
Thursday, August 4, 2005
This is my Fav. release from DIO. High lights for me were Evilution and the ultra dark Give Her The Gun (though I enjoy every track on this release). Muscianship is bang on and surly enjoy the fact they all had a hand in the writing process (Malmsteen sould take a page out of DIO's book and give that a try). These vet's knew what they were doing when they put this one together.
As for the Sabbath era Dehumanizer and the Mob Rules are probably my favorite B.S. releases. (ouch...stop throwing those stones...). Talk about getting a reaction...

Circle II Circle - The Middle of Nowhere
Thursday, June 30, 2005
I have been eagerly anticipating this release and I was not disappointed. Hashman pretty much bang on with the review. The only thing I can ad to that is that it left me Hungry for more. I am going to be listening to this one for a long, long, time...and only the elite can accomplish that with me.

Various Artists - Playlist - June/July 2005
Thursday, June 30, 2005
May - July playlist: just some thoughts

Y&T: Simply Rocks, Fight For Your Life is my fav on that one..

Warrent: Yes, I have a keyboard but but my head was turned in the other direction...Thank God

Edge of Forever: I'll have that one at the end of the week thanks to review here on this site.

Masterplan: It does grow on you!

Demons and Wizards: It's the production work here, especially with the drums...that snare is compressed to high. Shaffer's guitar work does not disappoint though.

DT: The Gods of Progg

Megadeth: yeap most definately Blasphemy...however Youth can never be forgotten just for Dave's french, and Victory is a fun song.

Nightwish: Complete Master Piece...10/10 that CD is always with me...Marco is a perfect fit.

YM: he's done...why are you listening to this one? Odessey is my fav...prolly because Joe Lynn Turner wrote all the lyrics on that release (great singer too).

HIM: *shivers*

If you have a chance listen to the new Circle II Circle...

Dream Theater - Images And Words
Friday, June 10, 2005
This release is something more than just BRILLIANT. This release is easily the landmark that allowed for new record companies to emerge and brought forth the emergence of other "quality" bands and those of the past to rise from the ashes. Today they are the most sought after group of musicians and the most influencial. DT have become gods. (what can I say...I worshipped them since the first time I heard Pull Me Under). For me I&W is amoung the greatest releases in music history. 10/10

Edge of Forever - Let the Demon Rock N Roll

I am sold on this review. So I am ordering it now through my fav Import CD store. Not to mention seeing that the Alessandro himself takes the time to pay attention to the thoughts of others says something about how he cares for those that support the band.

Stormwind - Rising Symphony
Sunday, May 8, 2005
I checked this release out and I have to say I like it a lot, and "Eyes of Change" is as well my first choise. Other high points of this release is the Malmsteen "Touching The Flames", "Strangers From The Sea" (good vocal arrangements)and the ballad "River of Love". The guitar work on this release is great and not over done, as with other bands of this genre tend to ruin structure with pompous blistering solos especially in ballads (Malmsteen comes to mind). When I heard the talented Thomas vikstrom's singing he reminded me of Goran Edman, though I can see the Soto comparison. The only lowpoint for me was the direction for the beginning and end of "White Man" as I found it was to much of a contrast comparatively to the rest of the song. Overall I really enjoyed this release and would not have checked it out if it were not for the above review. Worth the buy. 7/10

The Muddy production I felt made the songs in your face and raw (intensity). Much in the same way Iron Maiden was from Brave.. to Dance...
