One of the best things about the album is the sense of coherency but I still love the free-flowing vibe in that song though :)

Still, Coup De Grace is an incredible album, it just keeps sounding fresh and so vivid.

Yeah, I even sing along when listening to the instrumental disc. A very dark but still melodic album that firmly draws you in.

Saxon - Live with Doro and Sweet Savage at The ABC in Glasgow - April 28th 2009

Excellent setlist, Valley Of The Kings is just meant to be played live. In my opinion Saxon has been one of, if not the best live band for years and I can't wait to catch them in three weeks time in my hometown.
I remember watching them play two evenings in a row in different towns a few years back, not a lot of people showed up but they delivered an electrifying performance and played like 7-8 different tracks on the second day, which other bands does that?
Afterwards the band had a round of beers and spend some time talking to the fans.
Their performances at Wacken over the last years also stand out as something truly amazing; Biff is THE perfect showman.

Hey Sandra

Thanks, the line you picked is one of my favourites too. Incredibly the lyrics reach the same level as the unbelievable musical depth and creativity.

Various Artists - The State Of Power Metal Music

Nice to see some comments and suggestions.

In order for the lists not to get out of hand I didn't include Symphony X, Virgin Steele and the like, I went for a more clean cut Power Metal selection.
It's true that Invictus has a lot of Power Metal alongside the symphonic, progressive and classic Metal stuff and it's still my all time favourite album.

Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From A Memory

Heroes season 1 was great, but I haven't dared to watch season 2 yet.
Just finished the first three seasons of Lost and it's both intelligent, entertaining, fun and moving. Some of the flashbacks are simply awesome and most of the actors put on some performance (Sawyer, Locke, Ben). I thought that some "elements" in season 3 went a bit too far (and in some episodes simply not enough happened) but I still couldn't wait to watch the next episode...Season 4 here I come (in Europe we are somewhat behind the States).

Sweet Trade by The Poodles is a cool album, very melodic indeed...but not quite mature enough to really stand out if you ask me.

I experienced Sabaton at Wacken Open Air and they rocked, putting on a very entertaining show.

Right now the Marcello-Vestry album has taken the top spot on my albums of the year. I truly love that disc; the production is one of the best I have ever heard and the songs just makes you feel so alive. I have listened to the album almost constantly for months now and it actually is that thrilling.

With all the great new music this year you sometimes forget about the vintage stuff. This list is definitely worth revisiting, so many amazing discs.

The two Blind Guardian albums are my favourites, so bombastic, epic and still very different from each other.

Awake contains something truly unique and haunting, it still feels like entering a whole new world of stirring mystics...in huge part thanks to Kevin Moore.

The Damnation Game is a brilliant album and indeed it seems to be overshadowed by later works...but it's one of their best and most intriguing albums.

The Chemical Wedding draws on a bit of the same kind of intelligent design as Awake; I don't think I will ever be quite done with exploring this magnificent piece of gloomy art.

Theater Of Salvation caught me completely off guard somewhere back in 1999, I was going to see Hammerfall and read that the German Power Metal act Edguy was the support act, so I bought the album and was just blown away. I arrived in Sweden for the show only to find out it had been cancelled...discovering this albums intense mix of melody and power made the trip home a bit more bearable.

It's a funny thing with Black Sabbath, I don't quite understand the whole Ozzy trip either, sure some of those first albums were fantastic and inspiring, but the later era of the band is equally worth digging in to. Heaven And Hell is their finest hour if you ask me and when it comes to the Tony Martin years Tyr has always had a special soothing effect on my mind...just great epic stuff.

D:A:D - Riskin' It All
Tuesday, September 9, 2008
Ha ha, lets hear a loud Moo... don't hold back now ;)

Well put down review, I very much agree, it's simply just a fantastic Rock album with quite a few different moods supplying a mature counterweight to the silly (but fun and clever) stuff.

Rock 'n' Rock Radar has something very vigorous to add and Bad Craziness is one hell of a party anthem.
It's going to be exciting to hear the new Monster Philosophy released on November 10th.

FM - Indiscreet

I have to agree with Alanna here, this is in every aspect an unbelievable album, seldom have nine songs stood out so remarkably well. The thrilling, elaborate and versatile key work is one of the best things about it if you ask me.
A true AOR classic packed with effusive and extremely melodic tunes.

Greetings Dark Lord

Bon Jovi was quite the experience; I keep getting various flashbacks.

Thanks for the recommendations. What I heard of Sabaton has been quite cool; with The Poodles I haven't heard much but it's good to have that one in mind.

Opeth is just special, I have decided that I must run an Opeth marathon before Wacken starting with Orchid and ending with Watershed, just to get a view of the grand scope.
I haven't checked out the Lamentations DVD yet but I can imagine it's pretty awesome, the Damnation album worked well within it's own sphere...cool disc.

As for Heroes I'm only at chapter thirteen and until now its been cracking, I'll be sure to have a watchful eye on how season two progresses.
I have had plans to begin with Lost but haven't found the time yet; sounds like I should do something about that.

Cheers

Hi Maiden Fan.

Good to hear from you, I'm doing fine thanks, hope you're the same.

Nice lists you got on your profile, lots of classics.

Hey Maiden Fan.

BNW and DOD contained a wide range of songs that belong to some of Maidens best. The quality and overall inspiration level of A Matter Of Life And Death is below that in my opinion. It's a solid album and I like many of the progressive structures, but they are not as thrilling as for example Paschendale or The Thin Line Between Love And Hate.
The Pilgrim becomes down right monotone at times and the chorus in For The Greater Good Of God sounds forced, but I really like the dark atmosphere in that song though.

I'm glad you are even more excited about the new album and if I had unlimited time I would review it, and in spite of everything still rate it around "very good".

King Diamond - "Them"
Friday, September 30, 2005
@ VonSeux

Let's agree on one thing, the whole performance aspect of this album is truly fantastic.
That just doesn't save a couple of songs from lacking a more exciting nature, in my opinion that is. If a song isn't brilliant, it doesn't get so by having a great musical delivery, even though it could make it slightly better.
With the rather short amount of playing time on this album, a couple of "so so" cuts makes it more vulnerable.

What I mean by an unfinished story is the fact that Conspiracy is a continuance of this story; you could of course see it as finished (and with good sense) from a single album perspective.

I know the 7,5/10 score could seem a little harsh, but in the context of our rating system it's a pretty high grade, I must admit that I was close to the 8/10 though ;)
I try to evaluate each album according to my perception of it; a new release should get the same opportunity for scoring a high grade as an album that's 20 years old, no positive discrimination form my side on that account.

Anyway, the fun part of all this is discussing these things; luckily we both appreciate King Diamond and "Them"... thanks for checking in with your opinion.

Hello maiden fan.

Well I'm a music addict, first step is admitting it I guess ;)
I listen to quite a few albums on a normal day, and when I add an album to the playlist, I have been listening to the whole thing. When listening to an album in general, I mostly like going for the overall impression and play the whole piece through.
I receive some of these releases pretty close to the playlist deadline, so sometimes those only gets a few spins. The older and more familiar albums mostly receive a single spin, but most of the albums have been evaluated more thoroughly, which could equal around five rounds in the good old CD player, discman, PC or car stereo.

Reviewer here.

I guess I listened to the album around 15 times, or said in another way. enough to make up my mind.
I really liked the album even though I wasn't blown away by it, and please keep in mind that our rating system compares to no other. The main aim concerning our harsh standards is to make it easier to navigate between the different ratings, creating more qualitative space between opinions.
Personally I think that a lot of ratings out there have become inflated by high scores over and over, making it difficult to estimate how much the reviewer really likes the album.

Kamelot - The Black Halo
Friday, April 8, 2005
A solid and fine review.
It does slowly grow on you, complex and wonderfully melodic at the same time.
Khan's graceful voice lift these songs even higher and I simply love the mix of Progressive, Power and classic Heavy Metal that only seems to get more and more dynamic.
The fantastic and rich atmospheres found on Epica are also present in this one, haunting and compelling, this aspect being one of Kamelot's many strengths.
Breathtaking, clever and emotional lyrics only enhance the overall quality.
Years ago I said that this band would evolve into one of the most important and best Metal bands of all time. Apparently being unable to put out anything short of outstanding for a long time, they have surely come a long way.

Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction
Friday, March 25, 2005
Hey there W.

Every album review I make is subjective, that means it's based on my opinion and no one else's, that's the only way it makes sense in my world. Then you can add your opinion and that's basically what makes this fun.

It's only good that you like the album so much, it truly is a killer.
You say that I didn't point out any flaws. I have in fact pointed out three songs that I don't find that great, and given reasons for my opinion as well. I think I went into a certain level of detailed reviewing on this one, but it's only cool that you have pointed out things you find very special.
I have said it before, written an article about it and I will continue saying it: Our rating system is quite harsh and not like any other!!!.8,5 is an outstanding score.

I can only agree with you about the important factor played by the lyrics, it really means a lot and that's also a big part of why Streets gets a 10/10 in my book.

And you are right, of course it's "Illusion", I'll correct that.
These two releases had a big effect on me when I was growing up and I especially find part II incredible.
I did also try to mention the effect this album had when it came out, but because an album has a certain vibe, a nostalgic factor and had a big effect on its time, that doesn't necessarily make the music found on the album "out of this world".

Accept - Objection Overruled
Thursday, November 11, 2004
Hey Mads J.

Thanks for the comment; I found out a long time ago that my favourite Accept albums (Russian Roulette, Objection Overruled and Breaker) perhaps are odd choices for many other fans :)
Death Row and Predator are both very good albums, but I must say that I think they are the newer Accept albums that can be accused of having some songs that lack a bit behind the generally high standard connected with this band.
Objection Overruled has a raw, direct and "in the flesh" vibe that hits harder than ever, I more or less like everything about this release and to me it's already a "new" classic.
I guess we'll have to have a thorough discussion about this wonderful band on Saturday, while Steen's in the kitchen making "knoglegryde" and mixing those infamous green drinks :)

Friday, October 22, 2004
Hey Ben.

In my case there has been quite many new discoveries this year even though some time passes by between the really spectacular ones.

Here's a list of some of this years best releases by bands that can be labelled as newcomers or at least quite new on the scene:

-Platitude. Nine
-Abydos. The Little Boy's Heavy Mental Shadow Opera About The Inhabitants Of His Diary
-Wuthering Heights. Far From The Madding Crowd
-Cans. Beyond The Gates
-Orphaned Land. Mabool - The Story Of The Three Sons Of Seven
-Pyramaze. Melancholy Beast
-Frameshift. Unweaving The Rainbow
-Ania. Days Of Rising Doom - The Metal Opera
-Empty Tremor. The Alien Inside
-Dreamscape. End Of Silence
-Orion Riders. A New Dawn
-Dyecrest. The Way Of Pain

My "Highlights Of The Year 2004" article is already giving me a headache :)

What a delightful debut indeed, refreshing, inspiring and containing fantastic musicanship.

A unique mixture of Heavy, Power and Progressive Metal. Even though the music is layered and has rather profound structures it also has lots of memorable hooks, licks and choruses.

The slow epic vocal passage in Legend is totally enchanting, Until We Fade Away is a great symphonic ballad and Forsaken Kingdom represents a thrilling and fast side of the album.

A few passages could have fitted in more naturally and not every refrain is just as catchy but all songs on this disc are high quality Metal.

Looking forward to the release party/concert later today in Haderslev.

Running Wild - The Rivalry
Tuesday, March 16, 2004
Hey Jarkko.

Running Wild is not a band that experiments that much, and I don't really have a problem with this fact, as long as the music is good. The Rivalry is nevertheless one of the releases where I find most variations, not only in tempo but also in atmosphere. The later Running Wild sounds more exciting to me, I'm especially fond of the band's extensive epics that for the majority are located on their newer recordings.
I also disagree about their newer stuff sounding alike, Masquerade to take an example, is mainly about short fast or mid-tempo rockers, while the follow up album The Rivalry is much more complicated and theatrical, anyway that's my opinion.

And just for the "record", I have all their 12 studio albums, here follows my Top 5:

1. The Rivalry
2. Black Hand Inn
3. Blazon Stone
4. Masquerade
5. Pile Of Skulls

Various - Tommy's Highlights Of The Year 2003
Thursday, March 11, 2004
Hey Mads, and thanks for making your comment.

With regards to Opeth, I really like Damnation a lot, but I still find their mixed aggressive/mellow style to be more thrilling and balanced. The album has a brilliant atmosphere but not all songs have the same spellbinding and hypnotic effect.

Concerning Metallica: I certainly like St. Anger a lot, for me it's pure aggression and nerve stripped from all kinds of fine hooks, grand orchestrations and nice moods, once in a while I find this approach very refreshing. All this anger and frustration from both music and lyrics really speaks to me.
A couple of tracks are quite dull and yes the production could easily have been much better, but man it rips!

There are many albums that I simply haven't had the time to listen to, and of course our tastes and genres of interest differ, that's only natural and also what makes all of this so much fun.

And yeah, 2004 is starting out very promising indeed.

See you.

Hey Mads J., and thanks for the kind words. Yes I guess we see the sound quality rather differently.

Judas Priest - Jugulator
Sunday, January 11, 2004
Well well well, I guess we see this one rather differently Steen. As you probably had counted on, I just have a few things to add :)

Overall I see one of this album's biggest strengths in its combination of hardness, fastness, melody and grooving features. In my opinion there are quite a lot of really fast passages or even songs (Jugulator, Dead Meat) and the way the album shifts in tempo is absolutely fantastic and helps in keeping things interesting all the time.
True, the grooving element is highly weighed, but that's exactly what sets this apart from so much else, and when it's done with so much talent and with an eye for innovative parts (break in Abductors, mid-section in Blood Stained etc.) I'm sold.
These songs are exactly where they should be, some of them very ingenious and others more stationary, making up a nice varied and flowing record.
Much of the melody in this release very much comes from the refrains (Cathedral Spires, Death Row) and guitar solos (Burn In Hell, Bullet Train) but to have too much "melody" would not have fitted with this extremely heavy and dark record, its about atmosphere (Cathedral Spires, Death Row, Burn In Hell) and kicking serious ass (whole album). What is more powerful that songs like Bullet Train or Jugulator.

In Decapitate the halfway distorted solo links nicely to the eerie beginning of the song. The fact that the rhythm is as slow as it, gives the songs its own charm. The combination of the fantastic raw bass and tight drums are just phenomenal. In all fairness the chorus could have been better, but all in all the rather simple approach is just what is so different and great about it. Sometimes I just listen to the drums for the sheer delight of its varied and genius flow. This song is great and unique, giving the album a broader profile.

The minor distorted effects only makes the songs more interesting, the huge split solo in Death Row or Burn In Hell wouldn't have been the same without, and in Brain Dead the shift from distorted and normal vocals captures the whole essence of the theme.

Another thing that makes this stand out is the very creating and fantastic bass approach, over and over it's there giving the songs more life.

Jugulator is one of the most important, intense and vigorous albums I got, but its not only brutal, well played and inspiring, it's also filled with pure magical passages and lyrics that are important and meaningful. I love this album!

Iron Maiden - The X Factor
Thursday, September 4, 2003
I must say that I sadly fear you are right on this one Spanish. Many people don't like Blaze, and then automatically this is a bad album! Wrong.
First off, Blaze's voice fits perfect on this release and even though he isn't Bruce (who is? And get over it) he has a strong voice and also a flair for writing great songs (both aspects pointed out especially on The X-Factor and his solo albums), second this album reaches a depth and emotionalism never captured by Iron Maiden at any time again. This is one of Steve Harris' most thorough and capturing moments as a songwriter.

You like it and that's fine, I just have my opinion too.
And just for the record I wouldn't say that I don't know much about Metal and that I only listen to the same things.
I don't really know why you think that, juts because we don't have the same opinion I have a lot to learn? That doesn't make sense, Heavy Metal is my passion and I'm discovering new great bands all the time.
If you check out my CD collection with about 600 CD's, located under the staff pages, you hopefully will end up with another opinion.

Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From A Memory
Saturday, May 3, 2003
Thanks Yoni. When comparing it to the other Dream Theater albums I end up with this being my favourite one, but in great competition with Images And Words and Awake.
Metropolis Pt. 2 is just a fantastic concept that musically spans every possible genius element from the other albums, and yet its sounds so different and highly original.
The mix of catchy tunes wrapped up in complex passages in so many of the songs, is a really stunning feature.
They're in the studio right now, and I just can't wait until the next one.

Oratory - Beyond Earth
Monday, April 28, 2003
Well I wouldn't say that I don't understand the lyrics, I paid a lot of attention to what was vocally performed.
About the concept, I received no information on this band or album what so ever, even though I searched for more info, I didn't find this fact.
Basically the most important thing is that the music to me simply isn't very exiting and lacks some diversity. But as you can read in the review it also has its better moments.

Iron Maiden - The X Factor
Saturday, April 19, 2003
Well a lot of different opinions about this album. This album calls for a lot of patience. If you haven't heard it many many times then it might continue to grow, at least it did so for me. I love Iron Maiden and think that they are one of the best Metal bands ever; all their albums are from good to genius. I think that this album still is classic Maiden in many aspects, but in a slightly different package. The brilliant dark atmosphere runs as a thin line connection every aspect of the album. The musical performance is stunning and the feeling and glow of each song is unique and very influencing. A very complete album with a great personal perspective that just makes it even better. I find it extremely interesting and perfectly fitting that they made this album just the way they did.

None - Bonus Tracks Or Not Bonus Tracks... That is The Question
Tuesday, March 25, 2003
Well Claus I see your point, and it is a difficult subject.
But as I look at it you can see it from the fan side and from the business/money aspect of it.
If only one CD was produced, the only way to deal with the higher prices in ex. Japan was to accept high imports, or lower the price on the domestic market. If the domestic prices was lowered, there would be bought more CD's, making up for some of the loss due to lower prices and loss to imports.
I know that life is not always that simple, wish it was, but maybe a strategy in the direction of the one mentioned above could help the low sales in Japan, and stop the bonustrack madness.

Stuff in Japan is very expensive, but does it have to be a completely "new" track they get when the bonus approach is taking in. What about a poster, some DVD or PC features, or a live song. I know that the sales would be better if it was a "new" song, but money isn't everything.

As a mega Metal fan, I get pissed of when I find out that there exist songs that, because I live In Europe can't get a hold on, or have to pay around 40 Euros for.

Many bands find it very important to enter a new market, and this is clearly understandable. But bands have some power over what they wish to engage in. I hope that more bands, if no other possibilities exist to bring Metal to Japan, would restrict the bonus material to posters, DVD stuff and live songs.

Something that also is very important is that the bonus stuff becomes availed later on for people outside Japan. And there I don't mean on expensive singles or questionable best offs.

I have noticed that more and more CD's in Europe is released in different versions. When a record company does this, one of their objectives is to earn a higher profit. Why is it then that many of these special editions are sold out very quickly? I find this completely silly. There are a great deal of consumers that are ready to pay for the special edition (now and in the future), but that does not help very much when the record companies does not make enough of them! Are they afraid of earning too much? Think about that future market. If I discover a new band that released a CD two ears ago, and I want to get a hold of the special edition, my situation is not that great, either because it is sold out, I have to wait for ex. 4 moths to get it, or pay a too high price for it.
One thing is releasing special editions, but if companies do, then for the sake of everybody make enough of them, what is there to lose other than a higher profit.
Metal to the people.

None - Bonus Tracks Or Not Bonus Tracks... That is The Question
Tuesday, March 18, 2003
Yes this certainly is a very important theme.
It's fine to have extra songs or other stuff on an album, but all editions should so there would be only one edition for the whole world.
CD's are expensive enough as it is. I always buy the special edition because I want everything by the bands I love, but it surely would be much easier with only one example and then that's it.
It is a big problem when you want a special edition of a record, and then you find out that it is almost impossible to find.

I hope that the record business will change their policy, and give all Metal fans the possibility to buy the same music at the same price, anywhere any time.
