Nightwish - Once
The new album from Finnish Symphonic Metal band Nightwish has recently found its way into my CD player, and I couldn't be happier! Honestly, who would've thought that seven years ago, when their debut album Angels Fall First was released, they'd eventually treat us to such a powerful assault to the senses as their new album Once does? Like Century Child, released prior to this one, they haven't totally abandoned the Nightwish sound we've all grown accustomed to; they've just built upon it in the most impressive way possible. If you're a Nightwish fan you can stop reading this right now, because trust me: you're going to buy Once. Everyone else, keep reading to find out why this Finnish band is slowly becoming one of the premiere Metal acts in the world.

The album kicks into high gear immediately. After a childish voice whispers, "Once.I had a dream." the guitars knock your ass to the ground and the opener Dark Chest of Wonders sets a pretty high standard for which the rest of the album maintains throughout its entirety. The first thing I noticed was the unbelievable merging of an orchestra with the classic, albeit slightly heavier, Nightwish sound. Sure - their last album Century Child used an orchestra as well, but it was never as grand and majestic as it is on Once. The London Session Orchestra (whose work was used recently in the third Lord of the Rings flick) expands the music of Nightwish and helps them create a truly epic, magical piece of work. This is most evident on the track Ghost Love Score. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear this was used as the score to a grand Hollywood motion picture. Huge choirs, the presence of the orchestra, and Tarja's haunting voice all come together to create a truly emotional experience. I'm fairly certain I'll be listening to this track quite a bit, and loudly. :)

Creek Mary's Blood is another gorgeous track that uses a Native American theme, both lyrically and musically. The chanting and flutes at the beginning of this track set a positively chilling mood, and once again Tarja performs flawlessly. Speaking of Tarja, I've never heard her sing with such strong emotion in her voice than on this album. By far the most beautiful track on Once is the ballad Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan, sung completely in Finnish. I've always been sort of partial to Swanheart from their second album Oceanborn, but this song has replaced it as my favorite Nightwish ballad yet. The fact that it's sung in Finnish gives it a kind of exotic flavor (to me at least - I speak no Finnish), and combined with an absolutely beautiful melody and the flowing orchestra, I have a feeling this track is going to become a favorite with the fans. It's just perfect.

Wish I Had An Angel was a surprise for me when I first heard it. There are parts of the song that have a decidedly techno flavor, which I haven't really heard in the music of Nightwish thus far. This isn't a detriment to the album in any way, it's a totally killer track, and the catchy chorus melody has slowly turned it into one of my favorites on this album. This is the first track on Once to give us not only Tarja's vocals, but bassist Marco Hietala's as well. Somehow their two voices compliment each other perfectly and it adds yet another layer to the music that sets it apart from other Melodic Metal bands. I like how Marco is able to alternate between powerful clean vocals and growly, rough ones. His presence has helped add some much needed heaviness and power to the band.

I can highly recommend Once to every fan of Melodic Metal out there. This album contains the best possible mixture of heavy, crunchy Metal and symphonic orchestral music. Along with the operatic vocals and choirs, the music of Once is fresh, original, and an utter treat for the ears. There are one or two tracks that don't completely live up to the amazingly high quality of the rest of the songs, but overall this album is top notch.

I agree completely. This album is one of Nightwish' best so far, but Oceanborn is still my favorite. Dark chest of wonders is so incredibly catchy, it has been stuck in my head for a week now and listening to it ten times a day only makes it better. Nightwish have taken another step in a very cool direction. They were amazing at Sweden Rock Festival by the way :)

Great album, but for me Oceanborn is still the ultimate Nightwish album...don't know if they'll ever top that...can't wait to see them live in November, in Romania.

no doubt about it : "Once" is their best album [yet] and it's proof of the fact this unique band is still growing ; just curious about their life performance [november at Paradiso in Amsterdam ]

Another stunning release from our Finnish friends...although heavier, for me it's not quite in the same league as Century Child & Wishmaster, yet. The recent gig at London Astoria was amazing, musically superb with the audience in a warm stupor of adoration throughout (including me everytime Tarja looked my way)...but there were still tickets available at the box office 10 mins before they came on (when I arrived)...it seems that the UK are slow to wake up to Nightwish, a band who have taken Europe by storm, come on everyone, check them out - you WILL NOT be disppointed. Please Come back soon!

I agree, too. My dad doesn´t like any music I listen, but he "likes" Nightwish because they come from Kitee and my dad also comes there. :)

I LOVE this album! I have become a full-fledged Nightwish fan because of it. I had previously owned "Wishmaster," and after buying "Once," I've decided to try every Nightwish song and cd I can get my hands on (I've just bought "Century Child"). Nightwish is now tied for my favorite band (along with Metallica and Pink Floyd). I am totally in love with they way they use heavy metal and the power of an orchestra and choir on this cd (two mediums I've always thought should go together). "Once" is one of the most powerful, engaging cds I've ever heard, and Ghost Love Score is on of my favorite songs in the world. I also hope that the band continues in the direction begun on this album. Long live Nightwish!!!!

I like most of the songs (especially the opener) but I think Tarja is wayyy overrated, she's probably the weak point of the band! Just listen to Dark Chest, you start with some kickass epic orchestra METAL and then the big dramatic choirs and stuff, and then... she basically starts TALKING the lyrics. Major letdown. The orchestra saves it for me.

"Once" was my first encounter with Nightwish and the subgenre symphonic metal, when I somewhere back in time for the first time listen to "Planet hell". It was so different from everything else I had ever heard and the gothic atmosphere was unbelievably scary. First, I thought it was strange, however; there was something about it that made me push the play button over and over. It resulted with an addiction of symphonic metal.

When it comes to this song, words can't describe its true brilliancy. Ghost love score is a 10 minute breathtaking epic. Close your eyes and be ready for an unforgettable journey. It's a major symphonic piece of art and the lyrics are so well written; I cannot think of another Nightwish song which is as well written! Everything is fantastic, the dramatic violins and trumpets, the drums (wow, what a brilliant way to set off the song) and Tarjas wonderful vocal.

The drums in Romanticide are intense; Jukka delivers some nice stuff especially the breakthrough about 3.19 followed by the heavy guitar and bass, it kicks ass.

When it comes to Wish I had an angel, I can´t agree with Matthew. It is my least favorite song on the album. Lyrically, it is very good, however, the techno thing is just too much for my taste.

Nemo is, if I dare to say, more "commercial" than the previous songs from Nightwish. The usually operatic Tarja-voice,which might have frightened some, is not to be found instead a more turned down, however, still beautiful voice. Because of the soft voice it reached out to a broader audience and if they like it they will maybe check out some other Nightwish songs - a win-win-situation :)
