Events and Reports - Pyramaze - Pyramaze Release Party, Månen, Haderslev - September 9th, 2004
Written by Tommy

A release party held by a new promising Danish Metal act isn't something that happens every day so when Pyramaze announced theirs it was an easy decision to go.
Pyramaze's debut Melancholy Beast (read review by Steen) is a great and refreshing output that has many diverse qualities.
Me and a friend of mine meet up with Steen in inner Haderslev, had a burger and a beer and then we were ready to go find the venue.
Månen turned out to be a rather small but cosy place, we where even treated with drinks and chips

After the dark intro for Sleepy Hollow had faded out the band hammered right into some real head banging action, a cool opener with a nice balance of heavy and melodic stuff.
I was very excited by the chance to hear Lance King live and I quickly realized that I was in for something really special this night, he not only roamed the stage with his huge charisma, he sung like a god, totally professional, dedicated and with screams that sounded almost unreal. His performance in the speedy Forsaken Kingdom was extremely powerful, this track being one of my favourites from their debut.

After some fine-tuning the sound had become surprisingly good for such a small venue, very rich and detailed. Melancholy Beast is a great example of the band's melting pot tendency between Heavy, Power and Progressive Metal, a well-executed version featuring technical drums, and a pulsating keys solo.
A harmonious guitar lick and a memorable refrain are two very important aspects in The Journey, a cool cut that nevertheless gets a bit stretched at the end, in general I think the band could have used some supporting choirs on stage, especially because they take up a central position on the album.

The softie Until We Fade Away worked as a suiting breather after a very vivid opening to the gig, great piano tunes and Lance singing with amazing grace, a clear highlight of the evening.

If I should pick a fave from Melancholy Beast Legend would be a strong candidate, a technical and groovy mid-tempo track with a spellbinding calm midsection that explodes into a fantastic solo passage, and live they just nailed it down perfectly.
I must give credit to the whole band, they really played as a solid group and even though their music is quite complex at times the songs was delivered in a smooth and fluid manner.

Next up where the extensive Mighty Abyss and this one worked amazingly well in a live setting, the ultra heavy rhythm guitar riffs that this dark shrouded track has to offer were really intense, supported by deep bass lines to give it an even richer fundament.
The solid and quite good Power Of Imagination and The Wizard ended the set and my only complaint was that they didn't throw in a couple of well known cover tunes, that would not only have been highly interesting but also extended the party.

After the show I talked a bit with guitarist and main songwriter Michael Kammeyer, he was very happy with the response this evening and from the Metal community in general concerning their debut. He had plans to begin working on new material next year and I can only say that I'm looking forward to that release with lots of high expectations.

Overall a pretty cool and down to earth event.

I pretty much agree with Tommy. Short but great show in which the band proved that their music works very well live and they have what it takes to entertain a crowd. Lance King was the perfect frontman and Jonah, the energized keyboard player got the crowd going as well. I just wish the band would scrap the layered vocals which sounded fake in a live situation with only Lance singing, especially during Forsaken kingdom. It took a little away from my complete enjoyment of the show. Still, here is a band with huge potential.

Pyramaze = best release of 2004. Steen knows all about my Pyralove but I honestly do feel this way. In fact, their one of the all of maybe three Power Metal bands that I havent already been a fan of to come out this year that I really, really enjoy. Actually, I think they're the only one. I might do an editorial on this (my state of music affairs) cos I have been a huge fan of Power Metal for nigh on 9 years now but I am nearing my fill of it and my other outlets, Melodic Rock, Prog Metal and whatnot, there hasnt been any new bands there either that have rekindled the metal flame. I feel stuck, in between, in limbo. this ever happened to you guys, Steen and Tommy?

Hey Ben.

In my case there has been quite many new discoveries this year even though some time passes by between the really spectacular ones.

Here's a list of some of this years best releases by bands that can be labelled as newcomers or at least quite new on the scene:

-Platitude. Nine
-Abydos. The Little Boy's Heavy Mental Shadow Opera About The Inhabitants Of His Diary
-Wuthering Heights. Far From The Madding Crowd
-Cans. Beyond The Gates
-Orphaned Land. Mabool - The Story Of The Three Sons Of Seven
-Pyramaze. Melancholy Beast
-Frameshift. Unweaving The Rainbow
-Ania. Days Of Rising Doom - The Metal Opera
-Empty Tremor. The Alien Inside
-Dreamscape. End Of Silence
-Orion Riders. A New Dawn
-Dyecrest. The Way Of Pain

My "Highlights Of The Year 2004" article is already giving me a headache :)
