"Reverse Tripped" is the first full blown
Vains of Jenna album to feature singer Jesse Forte. On this album the fans will judge him and his vocals will probably divide the fans, since he sounds different compared to Lizzy Devine. The wind of change blows and Forte's voice is not the only difference since the band seems to distance from the 80's inspired Sleaze Rock.
Jesse Forte's voice has a wider range and gives
Vains of Jenna more possibilities in exploring the musical boundaries. However, they neglect the opportunity on this cover album since most versions are straight ahead mid-tempo songs. I love
Vains of Jenna but this is the most anonymous album from the Swedish American combo. The highlight of the disc is
Smoke on the Water, since the arrangement is playful and inventive. The version is a ballad-like tune and is performed without the signature riff at all.
"Reverse Tripped" covers lots of 60/70's hits that depart from Hard rock.
Vains of Jenna doesn't tear up the songs but plays them close to the originals. The bands trump card Nicki Kin is hardly visible on lead guitar, but he lays down some solid lead vocals on
Wish You Were Here.
The single "We can Never Die" proved that
Vains of Jenna is still going strong. "Reverse Tripped" is a transition record and can benefit from the learning of how to work with Forte in the studio. It seems like the boyz are ready to take it to the next level.
The next studio release from
Vains of Jenna will prove whether this is make or break. The next album containing original material is anticipated
Vains of Jenna's own songs are to be preferred even in favor of this bunch of classic tunes.
