Don't give a Damn opens the awaited debut album from Rock's new hope
Vains of Jenna. The song title is very meaning relating to these young Rock N' Roll rebels from Falkenberg Sweden. Personally I feel blessed that I twice in 2 years have discovered a band that hits bulls eye regarding my taste in music. First it was another Swedish band
CrashDïet and this time
Vains of Jenna.
I have been following the band for the past year and I am familiar with their demos up to this long anticipated release.
Vains of Jenna might benefit of another year on the road before releasing their debut album, but as we learned with
CrashDïet you never know when the party stops. Therefore Rock fans have to be grateful that
Vains of Jenna already has the opportunity to release "Lit Up/Let Down" on their manager Stevie Rachelle's RLS label.
Don't Give a Damn opens the album is a very positive manner and sets the record straight. These guys are the next big thing.
Ceased Emotions is pure rocker with a verse that includes a bouncing verse with a steady drum beat ala
Faster Pussycat's
Bathroom Wall. Singer Lizzy DeVine sounds like
Spike from (London) Quireboys lost little brother. His voice is hoarse even though he probably only consumed a limited amount of Whiskey and cigarettes since he is only in his mid 20´s. Since I already used references to
Faster Pussycat and (London) Quireboys then you ´should get the idea that we are talking attitude packed Rock ´N Roll.
Hard to Be Vain was earlier showcased on a
Vains of Jenna demo, but in June 2006 they re-recorded this one.
Get on the Ride, Baby's got a secret and
NoOne's Gonna do it for you has also previous been out as demo material, but "Lit Up Let Down" is all new recordings. The band just polished a few sharp edges otherwise they sound the same.
"Lit Up/Let Down" is a consistent Rock 'N Roll record. Among the highlights is the new recording of
Hard to Be Vain. Favorite moment is just before the solo where Lizzy Devine sings "Give it to me Nicki". I love the guitar solo for this one. These guys may be affiliated with the Glam/Sleaze scene - however there are no flashy guitars in
Vains of Jenna. They are founded in the traditional Rolling Stones alike tradition of Rock N' Roll and mix it with some sleazy rock music
The title track is the album's only ballad and Lizzy DeVine managed to create very emotional vocals. It actually suits the band to bring down things. Most of the songs have a swaggering beat and
Get on the Ride plus
Baby's got a secret are both songs that define the meaning Rock N' Roll in its purest and most honest sense.
Despite their young age the band is musically competent. DeVine is the "in-your-face" throughout most of the record. DeVine calms down on the 2 acoustic tracks and stripped down you really sense they are great musicians. JP
White and Jacki Stone is a rock-hard backing along with Lizzy Devine's solid rhythm playing. As mentioned before Nicki Kin has a great vibe to his playing and Nicki definitely plays by feel.
Rock N' Roll is not all about sound and songs; it is also about the look. These guys got everything covered. The band currently takes the Sunset Strip by storm playing the legendary clubs where most of the great bands build their foundation.
On behalf of
RevelationZ Magazine I certify and approve
Vains of Jenna. and remember where you first read about them, because in the future
Vains of Jenna will be a significant part of the Rock Scene.
