RevelationZ Magazine has followed
Mama Kin since their first demo recordings around 5 years ago. The band has progressed and frankly "In the City" doesn't sound like a debut album. The songs sound mature and well balanced. Singer Ward has a
Paul Stanley like tone, which gives
Mama Kin a refreshing sound and makes them stand out from the stream of Swedish sleaze bands.
Mama Kin is now a four piece. Since the demo days
Mama Kin has expanded with an extra guitarist, which has broadened their sound. The highlights are album opener
Badge and A Gun, Mrs. Operator and
Too Much along with the title track. The keywords of "In the City" are chunky riffs, vocals and catchy choruses.
Higher and Higher is a song that dates back to when
Mama Kin was unsigned. Same goes for album closer
Champagne Chicks and Rock N Roll , which is a classic party "boys nite out" rocker.
The first single
Superman is the most polished tune, but hopefully the catchiness of the track will be an ear opener for the average rock listener also.
If you are looking for flashy guitar solos you better look elsewhere.
Mama Kin is all about the songs; they are short and precise. Every song is driven by catchy melody lines - kind of old school Kiss, but with an updated sound.
The album is released by Leon Music. Go check
Mama Kin out. Along with
Innocent Rosie "In the City" is the best debut album of 2009.
