Wednesday, September 29, 2010 - Falconer Confirm New Album Details
Guitarist Stefan Weinerhall of the Swedish power metal band Falconer has issued the following update:

"Recording time is coming up. Most songs are written and rehearsed soon as the studio time is drawing nearer, starting to feel a bit stressed!! The album will be mixed in the end of January so I'd guess we're up for a late spring release.

The title of the new album will be 'Armod' and will be completely sung in Swedish except for the bonus tracks that will simply be English versions of the best (according to us) new songs.

This time we have concentrated on the traditional folk side of our music including more traditional folk songs (the majority of the material is still our own), more fiddles and flutes.

Be calm, the horrid sound of accordions will firmly be left behind!!

This is a way to finally devoting an entire album to the influences and getting that out of our system, so to speak, and to do the thing some have asked for during ten years. This is not the new direction of us but just the sound of THIS album.

We are prepared for nagging about lack of speed and the full use of the Swedish language and, of course, the cynical opinions that we lack inspiration and thus use more traditional folk songs.

The next time we'll take another step; I wonder what that can be."

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - Falconer - Still alive and kicking
News from the official Falconer website:

Yet another rare updates for all who wonder if we´ve split up, taken a year off or just forgot the website:

Between jobs, diapers, tv-shows, friday beers and good ol´ apathy we rehearse a song or two. Slowly the new stuff is taking shape but we have no stress, half the new album is written. Recording time for the forthcoming album is October.

Previously I said that it will have a slightly new direction, or rather new approach.
Hint no2: The Germans will probably like it more than the Americans.

Monday, August 31, 2009 - Falconer to begin working on new album
An update from the official Falconer website reads:

Now as the massive world tour of 2009 is over we will retreat and start working on new material. We have a clear idea of the direction. It will be something different from what we usually do. It´s not gonna be different enough to change the band name but probably different enough to annoy some. But then again, that allways happen anyway. More news will come as we have some more solid info.

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - Falconer to enter the studio
News update from Falconer:

Studio time again!

Midwinter is just around the corner and that´s the time Falconer usually put on their cloaks, tights and funny hats to record songs about fairies, elves and other silly things. Karsten, the hairy drummer have just entered the halls of Sonic Train Studios to pound away on 11 tracks, jolly and full of Jule time spirit.

In the fall of 2008 the yet untitled album will be released.

Saturday, October 13, 2007 - Falconer album news
A news update from Falconer:

Hi folks!

Now we have all the new songs for the next album written. There´s just the finishing touches left to do.We will start recording around christmas this year and then mix it in May 2008. Faster and more complex than the last album is a quite good description I would say.

The 3:rd birth has happened within Falconer in a year as Magnus got a little son.

All shirts are sold out now and we're looking for companies to handle the printing and selling of the official merchandise in the future. As long as it is a fair deal it´s interesting. We´ll see what happens.

Until then, take care!

Monday, April 23, 2007 - Latest news from Falconer
News update from Falconer:

Hi everyone.

Sorry for the lack of news but things have been calm for a while. Not much is up really except from writing new songs and some rehearsals. Mathias is as busy as usual, Karsten still figures out how to raise a new born and I have just moved.

We just extended our deal with Metal Blade for another 4 more albums. YAY!!
We didn't see any reason to change label or even look over the fence since we´re this content with the present situation and collaboration.

The future plans consists of the festivals of course but also a studio recording sometime this winter.

About the new material:
So far I have 7 new songs done, but there´s still more work to them. Slightly faster and with more unexpected turns is all that I can say now. The lyrics will all be about Swedish medieval life and episodes. Not a concept album really but still something in that direction.

What I decided early on what that it wouldn't become "NORTHWIND pt.2." "Northwind" is as good as it can be, therefor we'll make things a tad different this time. Can't wait until we´re back in the studio again.

Tuesday, July 25, 2006 - Falconer album news
Falconer have finished recordings on their fifth studio album entitled Northwind.

Guitar player Stefan Weinerhall comments: "Northwind, the fifth album of Falconer is a return to the folkish style after some experiment on the last one. Very melodic and catchy, and with Mathias (Blad) back on vocals he gives the album that extra epic touch that none other can do. The album is not a concept album although the title sums up the atmosphere of both the music and the lyrics. From catchy metal to sweet ballads to medieval minstrels gone electrified, there´s something for all tastes."

The album will be released as a limited first edition including a bonus CD with recordings of four Swedish folk songs and a video documentary of the album recordings.

"Northwind" track listing:

01. Northwind
02. Waltz with the Dead
03. Spirit of the Hawk
04. Legend and the Lore
05. Catch the Shadows
06. Tower of the Queen
07. Long Gone By
08. Perjury and Sanctity
09. Fairyland Fanfare
10. Himmel Så Trind
11. Blinded
12. Delusion
13. Home of the Knave
14. Black Tarn (instr)
15. Child of the Wild 2006 (Japan bonus)

Bonus CD:

01. Kristallen Den Fina
02. Ridom Ridom
03. Liten Vätte
04. Vårvindar Friska
+ video documentary of the recording

Northwind will be released on September 22nd in Germany/Austria/Switzerland and the 25th of September in the rest of Europe.

Sunday, April 9, 2006 - Falconer album news
Falconer guitarist Stefan Weinerhall has sent BW&BK the following update:

"The new FALCONER album will be entitled Northwind. Some of the titles will be: 'Catch The Shadows', 'Northwind', Legend And The Lore', 'Waltz With The Dead', 'Long Gone By' and 'Tower Of The Queen'. These titles really fit the musical atmosphere of the album. Our label boss visited the studio in February. As he heard some of the material, he became very supportive and positive about the new album. The album will be released in September/October 2006. The first edition will contain a bonus disc with four traditional songs, in Swedish, and a short DVD documentary of the recording session. Even the booklet itself will contain.......well, more stuff. The final recordings and the mix will take place in July. I´m still coming up with more details and additions to the orchestrations. Mathias (Blad - returning/original vocalist) is penning the harmony and choir arrangements. This time around you will get more folky and classical instruments added to the songs, something that really enhance things and make it more colourful. I tell you, I'm dying to hear the final result. There's never been a Falconer album this thought through, produced and filled with nuggets of gold, but I´m not the one to review it. I think!"

Thursday, January 19, 2006 - Falconer album news
News from Falconer:

The first rehearsal with the complete line up took place some weeks ago, and I can tell you that it sounded awesome to finally hear the result. Mathias brought that extra spice to the songs as usual.

All songs for the upcoming album is written into every detail, it feels quite good to for once be this well-prepared and hopefully that can result in some spare time in the end instead of cutting out ideas.

The new material is more folkish but still feels fresh, like a natural progression from the 2 first albums.

We will enter the studio in February to record all instruments, then carry on with the vocals and mix in the summer. On one hand it feels hard to wait that long to finalize it, on the other hand it might be good to sit back and clear your head and then return with charged batteries again.

The first edition of the album will contain about 4 bonus tracks, traditional Folk songs!! I would estimate the release date to be in Sep/Oct '06.

Saturday, November 19, 2005 - Mathias Blad returns as the singer of Falconer!
Latest news from Falconer:

Well, once again the line up of Falconer is changing. "Now again!!"; you might say. It do sound a bit unstable to do this every once in a while I know.

After changing the new music into more folkish style (and loving the sound of it) Karsten and I thought, why not go "the whole way", it would really fit the music.
That is the style people got to know us by, and that is the style that is best for Falconer in all ways. It´s back to the original style, leaving exprimentations and changes to act under a different moniker maybe. So hereby we present you the return of Mathias Blad.

So we thank Kristoffer for the years in the band, it´s been a great time we allways will cherish and we assure you all that this has nothing to do with personal matters.
We which all the best for Kriss in the future.
This kind of thing is about the worst things you can do to a bandmate if you´re all friends but in the end, this is not a sand box, it´s a band.

// A slightly sad but optimistic Stefan, Karsten, Jimmy and Magnus

Friday, April 8, 2005 - New Falconer song online
Metal Blade has posted a new Falconer song called 'Purgatory Time' in Real Audio format. Here is the direct link.

The song is from the band's upcoming album, Grime Vs. Grandeur, to be released on May 2nd.

"It is what we would like to call a comeback," states Falconer mastermind/guitarist Stefan Weinerhall, "since the last album felt a bit too unfocused and not as good as it should have been. This time though. oooh, how I have rubbed my hands to some of the stuff!

"Kristoffer was also more confident in the studio this time, which cannot be missed by anyone. He fits the songs like a glove! With songs like 'Humanity Overdose', 'Emotional Skies', 'Child Of The Wild', and 'I Refuse' we feel like: If people don't like this it's time to start doing something else 'cause people are retarded! People will recognize the Falconer sound but also get to discover a new aspect of it. So, prepare to get a dose of the best melodies in the metal world spiced up with more attitude and a heavier sound than ever before."

Grime Vs. Grandeur will feature guest performances from Snowy Shaw on drums and Andy LaRocque on additional lead vocals.

Thursday, March 17, 2005 - Falconer news
Falconer news from Metal Blade:

Swedish Power Metal merchants Falconer are set to release their fourth studio album "Grime Vs. Grandeur" on May 2nd, 2005 via Metal Blade Records!

"It is what we would like to call a comeback," states mastermind Stefan Weinerhall, "since the last album felt a bit too unfocused and not as good as it should have been. This time though. oooh, how I have rubbed my hands to some of the stuff!"

On this new album, Stefan shared the songwriting duties with singer Kristoffer Göbel to some extent, which gave the whole affair more variety and a new approach, allowing Stefan to only bring forth his best ideas and dumping the rest.

"Kristoffer was also more confident in the studio this time," continues the guitarist , "which cannot be missed by anyone. He fits the songs like a glove! With songs like 'Humanity Overdose', 'Emotional Skies', 'Child Of The Wild', and 'I Refuse' we feel like: If people don't like this it's time to start doing something else 'cause people are retarded!"

"Grime Vs. Grandeur" features guest performances by Snowy Shaw on drums and Andy LaRocque on additional lead vocals.

"People will recognize the Falconer sound but also get to discover a new aspect of it," concludes Stefan. "So prepare to get a dose of the best melodies in the metal world spiced up with more attitude and a heavier sound than ever before."

Wednesday, September 22, 2004 - Falconer news
After auditioning several guitarists, Falconer have now found a new lead player to complete their line-up. His name is Jimmy Hedlund, and he totally outshone the rest of the applicants.

He nailed every note in each of the three songs that were tested, and possesses some amazing solo skills as well!

Falconer will start recording their new album in late December for an early May release. The title of the fourth album will be "GRIME VS. GRANDEUR"

Sunday, June 27, 2004 - Falconer diary update
The official Falconer website has a new diary section. Here is the first update:

The music:

As you know we are 2 members short at the moment. It does not affect the future of the band in any way, nor the song writing. The writing for the new album has gone very well so far, it seems like this time we have to cut out songs from the album for the first time. It might be a bit too early to say yet, but the material feels very fresh and sometimes different. Over all it feels like it's gonna be a bit faster and harder. I have just visited Kristoffer in the lovely Gothenburg archipelago for some bouncing of ideas, writing lyrics and drinking beer. He will be more involved in the new album since he's got some really great ideas. The new album is planned to be recorded around new-year.

About new members:

We have gotten quite some interest from people who want the job. Since we're not in any hurry we won't rush to a decision but a bass player have been tested and it looks promising so far.

Bonus material:

We are also recording some bonus material for the next album + a little song that will end up on the website only. The bonus recording is more like a fun thing we're doing but we think it will please some fans.

Monday, May 24, 2004 - Falconer search for new members
Here is an update from the Falconer website:

Once again Falconer is up for a line-up change. Second guitarist Anders Johansson and bass player Peder Johansson is out.

A big discussion took place after the gig in Motala (Swe) as we started to talk about the future of Falconer. Two camps quickly formed about the issue. The talk started to get more and more aggressive until it took an ugly turn as Peder started to let his hands do the talking, but luckily Kristoffer stepped in and stopped it from getting really bad.

Although our intoxicated state of mind probably made the argument worse, it has left deep scars. After this incident the contacts has been very chilly with especially Peder but also Anders.

Karsten, Kristoffer and I believe that the tension will undermine the future atmosphere of the band if they were to stay. It's better to go our separate ways and let them follow their ideas with their other band Guineapigs.

We don't think nor hope that Peder and Anders have a different opinion about the decision we have taken.

Sincerely!
Stefan, Kristoffer and Karsten.

Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - Falconer split with singer and announce replacement
Swedish melodic power metallers Falconer have parted ways with vocalist Mathias Blad and have replaced him with Destiny frontman Kristoffer Göbel. According to the band's official web site, Kristoffer is "not a Mathias wannabe but [has] his own style, which also gives the band a chance to evolve." Blad, who left the band due to his unwillingness to tour, will remain involved with the group and will appear as backing vocalist on future Falconer recordings.

Falconer, who recently added guitarist Anders Johansson and bassist Peder Johansson to the group's lineup, will record the follow-up to last year's "Chapters From A Vale Forlorn" in May at Andy La Rocque's (KING DIAMOND) Los Angered Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden for a late 2003 release through Metal Blade Records. "This time, it will be a concept album, but fear not dear fans, it will not be one of those weird [hard-to-listen-to] concept albums," the band promise. "The music is mostly as it has been but with one lyrical story throughout the whole album."

Other information
Band Profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

-Stefan Weinerhall, song writer, guitarist and founder of Falconer.

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

-Melodic folk metal. Of course the idea has come and gone to try out other styles but this style is what comes natural and feels most honest to write.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

-"Among beggars and thieves". People should buy it because it´s damn good in all ways. Well, if you´re into Death metal I wouldn't suggest you buy it. I think we managed to tie the current days skills and song writing with the style of the 2 first albums which is a bit more riff based and aggressive than our latest albums. There is also some significant traces of my old band Mithotyn here and there for those who remember those days.

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

-I started the band in 1999, recorded a demo and asked Mathias to sing on it. Later he became a member as well as Karsten whom I had played with in the past. After that we released 5 albums and changed members throughout the years. The highlight must have been any of the WACKEN shows.

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

-Well, honestly we just managed to record a demo before we got the record deal so you could say that we got into the industry right away.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

-Walking of the stage in WACKEN 2002 and also hearing Mathias back in the band recording the vocals for the NORTHWIND album.

How is the writing process in the band?

-I basically write everything and send out demos to the rest of the band and then we rehearse it. Jimmy is coming with more and more ideas now though.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

-Yes you have to if you don't want to starve to death. The music is what I live for but not what pays the bills. I think it was my love for KISS and MOTLEY CRUE that made me interested in metal and then I had friend of the same thoughts so we just started playing together.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

-Ian Anderson and Ronnie James Dio.

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording?  If so, what made you regret it?

-Sceptre of deception is our worst album because of the song writing, musicianship and vocals and also the sound. Changing vocalist to begin with wasn't that smart but what did we know then, we wanted to get the opportunities that was shown to us.

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

-"Enter the glade", "Power" and "The Coronation" are among the weakest songs we've done according to me.

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

-Not that much. We need to have lyrics so I just try to make lyrics that sound good and fit our style. Of course you feel very proud when you've written a good lyric but it´s the music that is important for me.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

-It has had it´s brightest days.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

-Don´t release any music

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

-You decide your own life, don´t try to blame anyone else.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

-Get up at 5:00 and go to work. Come home at 16:00 to watch TV and eat, might play some guitar if I don´t spend time with my wife and son. Then it's time for bed.

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

-My family.

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

-Well, we have only been on tour for 2 weeks so..well it must have been when our bus driver got drunk as hell and we throwed him off at an airport and drove away. Fucking Schnitzel-Fritz!!

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

-A survival instructional book. Black Sabbath - Heaven and hell, Jethro tull - Heavy horses, Avantasia - pt.1. Lord of the rings triology.

What is your favourite joke?

-English ship: Help us, we're sinking!!!! German coast guard: What are you sinking about?

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

-To shock the fans on the next album that´ll come out in about 2 years.

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

-Check out the best album of the year: "Among beggars and thieves", it´s even better than our 2 first albums......really!
