Staff page - Nina
Hello, Metal fans!
My name is Nina Hansen, and I live in Copenhagen, Denmark.
I first got interested in Heavy Metal about ten years ago, and little did I know how much of a lifestyle and passion it would become to me, when I picked up my first Iron Maiden record! The first time I listened to it, it caught me how different it was from what I had ever heard before, which was mainly mainstream pop. The depth and details in the music was something I had never experienced before, the wildness, soaring guitars and fast drums was a completely new feeling in my universe. To intensify this feeling it was a live album, in fact "A Real Live One" and listening to the many screaming fans only added to the magic! This was a musical world I had to experience more of! Soon I discovered bands like Manowar, Black Sabbath, Accept and Judas Priest.
My first concert was Bruce Dickinson on his 1994 Solo tour and everything concerning older Maiden and Mr. Dickinson became an obsession to me! I soon joined the Iron Maiden fan club and started meeting people with the same passion for Metal and attending concerts became a very important part of my life, even if they were few at that time and I had limited possibilities due to my young age and lack of money. Today it has become easier for me to travel around in Europe with the sole purpose of seeing great bands perform.
It wasn't before the late '90s I discovered Power Metal and in the beginning it sounded mostly like old fashioned 80s Metal to me, but I discovered bands like Helloween, who were very speedy, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian and Rhapsody, who had a somewhat more symphonic approach, which I came to love very much. Today I listen mostly to this style, and I think it holds a lot more diversity than a lot of people claim, despite the many "Helloween-clones" that has been flooding the scene the last couple of years.
However I try to keep an open mind, as one of the strongest forces about Heavy Metal is the diversity and many genres, which all have different qualities and atmospheres!
In 1999 I saw a newly reunited Destruction perform live and I was compelled by the energy, rawness and speed in this music! This led to a bigger interest in Thrash Metal with bands like Destruction, The Crown, Raise Hell, Tankard and Kreator entering my world!
However, my deepest love is in melodic Metal in it's many forms. I love a symphonic touch and consider Rhapsody and Blind Guardian true pioneers and great artists in this field! If you want to know what rocks my world right now, or what bands I love, check out my current playlist and my list of fave bands here!
One of the things about Metal that fascinates me the most, except for the before mentioned diversity, is the lasting quality that is in a lot of it! I listened to my first Manowar album, The Triumph of Steel about ten years ago, and I still listen to it often the day today, and find it an outstanding album! It's stuff like that that makes Metal so special to me! I don't say that certain other musical styles don't have this but it's something I appreciate a lot!
I think the Metal scene is doing better than it has in many years, but perhaps that's only because I'm too young to remember the 80's! :)
Well, there are a lot of very talented bands out there, for sure and as long as there are dedicated fans to buy the albums and strive to keep the scene alive, Metal will live!

Comment by Jonatan (Anonymous) - Friday, September 23, 2005 | I'm from Argentina, and I like metal too, but think in the lyrics, You have heard Narnia or Iron Fire, Mortification, Tourniquet. They have lyrics, really, I find something new in that bands |
Comment by Nina - RevelationZ (Anonymous) - Saturday, September 24, 2005 | Hi Jonathan!
Yes, I know all four bands a little bit. Mortification is not really my cup of tea. Tournequet....I don't know it very well, but I saw them live many years ago and that was a great experience! I am a very big Iron Fire fan, they rule!! Regarding the lyrics, I'm not sure I totally understand what you mean...three of these bands are very Christian and Iron Fire is mostly fantasy and battle themes. But I seem to prefer bands with an uplifting message, if that is what you mean! |

Comments: 1 Ratings: 0 | | Hi Nina, I hope you don't mind the message. I loved your honest review of W.A.S.P., and was wondering if I could print it as part of my biography book i'm writing about the band? If you have photos, that would be fantastic. In return, I will give you a credit in my book. Many thanks, Darren Upton.

Hello Darren!
Wow, a book on WASP sounds awesome! I would be proud to have my review quoted in your book. Unfortunately, I don't have any photos from the show, so permission granted, but please write, where you got the text (RevelationZ Magazine/Nina Hansen). Please tell me some more about the book, I'm very interested (title, when is it out, how did the project come about, etc.). If you want, emil me at nina@revelationz.net
Rock on! Nina
