Tuesday, July 4, 2006 - 7thorns wins Heavy Metal Eurovision - 4th edition
News from 7thorns:

It might "just" had been an internet vote competition, but none the less 37 bands from 37 European countries participated in the 4th edition of the Heavy Metal Eurovision contest, and in the end we, 7thorns, were - somehow - announced as the winners.(no bribes involved).

Not only was our promo CD "Artificial Night" nominated for a Danish Metal Award, now the title track "Artificial Night" has won this international heavy metal contest. Not bad for a first release from a new band ;-) .

We are extremely happy to receive this kind of acknowledgement from people and fans from all over Europe, and we would like to thank everyone who helped us with this - the Danish e-zines, radio stations and magazines who published the information regarding the contest, everybody who voted for us and a big HAIL to the rest of the 36 bands from all over Europe.

Cheers to you all - see you!!!

Band profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

Lars, drummer, founding member.

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

7thorns started as a side project for me and an old friend of mine back in 1998. Nothing came out of it except the name (which at the time was "Seven Thorns"). So after 3-4 years (I got the opportunity to play in another band from '98-´02), when I found myself band less, I decided to follow my dream (which already from 1986 has been to play power metal - although back then it was not called power metal) and find the right members for 7thorns. So I posted some ads in the musicians sections in various papers/web pages and after 2 months Munk responded to my ad and the band was started for real!!

I feel that the biggest highlights of the band (and there are many!!) was when every one of the current members of the band joined in (and in the beginning when Mik and Tommy joined as well). We feel very privileged to have experienced such a huge success in our live performances - our first gig in Jan. 2005 (with Mik on vocals) was a gigantic success for us, because we had become a "real" band. The next gig was in Thisted as support for Illnath - which by the way is 50% of 7thorns (Pete, Tyr and myself) - and the day after as support for Iron Fire at Forbrændingen. These 2 gigs where the first two gigs with Thomas, and at that point he wasn't a member of the band, only session singer - but he was bitten by the stage bug, and now he is one of our strongest features. Our 3rd gig (not counting our gig with Mik) was at The Rock in Copenhagen, and our 4th was again at The Rock, only this time as support for the legendary Canadian heavy metal band Anvil.

This "importance" increase in gigs is a very very big highlight for us all. We have all been part of many other bands, but we've never tried to have the success we have now so fast..

And now we're nominated for a Danish Metal Award for best demo (the talent prize), which once again shows the tremendous success 7thorns has had in it's short life - less than one year (we count the age of the band from the day Pete joined, because it was at that point we really started the band).

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

No - I have always known that if we could get the right people to join the band we would come further. Right now we can't say we have made it in the industry, but with the communications we have with a certain German record label at the moment, it wont be long before we can proclaim that we have been signed to one of the most interesting labels in the world (hopefully :)).

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

Well so far we have planned to record an album in March/April next year, so when it is released I will give you all the reasons.

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

Power metal with a German/Finish inspiration. NO - we do not consider to play anything else.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

First it is getting a complete band together, second is to record a promo that really brings forward the things I've wanted to do for so many years, third is the way the world has received the promo.

I am sure that there will be some new favourite moments in the very near future.

How is the writing process in the band?

Anyone who has an idea (musically) can bring it forward and we will try to work with it. It is mostly Pete who writes the music and Thomas the lyrics. But we all have our fingerprint on the final song, as we all take part in the arrangement of the music.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

Music has been part of my life for so long time now that it would be difficult imagining a life without it. At the same time I have had the opportunity to study and work with something that means almost as much to me as music. So I have everything I want right now.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

Well my biggest influences are:
Ingo Schwichtenberg, Stefan Kaufmann, Louie Clemente, Uli Kusch and Dan Zimmerman.

All in all I admire people who perfect the things they set out to do. People who through their art, music, writing, acting shows how things are meant to be done.

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

I regret wasting too much time on certain past members who turned out to be not so involved and enthusiastic as they claimed to be - wimps and posers leave the hall!!! Musically I have no regrets.

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

No - not at the moment, and I don't think there will be one.

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

Quite important - it must, in someway, reflect the music, the band and our beliefs.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

I will tell you when I know some more about it :)

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

If I listen to an album I like and I have the opportunity to have the original or a copy, I would buy the original.

Making illegal copies of CD's could make the market bigger for less known bands, if more people think like me - and buys the original album if they like what they hear. If they don't like the music they will not buy the album anyway, so a naïve way to look at it could be that illegal CD's could help some bands to reach a bigger audience. I am very well aware of the complexity of the issue, and if someone is producing a lot of illegal CD's to sell, I am 100% against it, but if someone burns a CD and gives it to his friends to check out, it is a slightly different thing I think.

So go for the people who makes money of illegal CD's, and stop wasting time on persons who has made a copy for a friend - I believe/hope that true fans will buy the original albums anyway.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Enjoy life, follow your dreams, do not let people bring you down - boycott "janteloven", everything is possible if you want it to be.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Morning walk with my dog (Bastian), of to work (I work with medical research), go home, run ~10 km with Bastian to stay fit, play drums - either at home or with the band, eat, go to sleep (after watching the late night episodes of Simpsons).

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

I love to relax by taking a walk on the beach, at night, with Bastian - he takes whatever time I have left of the day. And of course "The Simpsons" \m/

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

Ask Pete :)

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Albums:
Helloween: Keeper part II (Eagle Fly Free is the best song ever!!!!)
Sonata Arctica: Winterhearts Guild
Accept: Stayin' A Life (the best live album EVER made)

Movies:
Lord Of The Rings: The complete saga
Austin Powers: The complete collection
Matrix: The complete collection

Books:
Mötley Crüe: The Dirt (a must read for all rock fans and musicians)
David Lee Roth: Crazy from the Heat (good book. Pretty much tells you that if you have the will you can do it!!)
Lemmy: White Line Fever (the truth is even more frightening than the rumours)

What is your favourite joke?

I don't do jokes, I do word play (you will know when we meet someday, the rest of the band hate me for it \m/).

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Recording a full length album next year, sign the contract with ., play a lot of gigs.

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.

Well first of all thank you every one. We hope that 7thorns we one day can come and play a gig in a club near you!!

And remember: Keep metal alive - support your local metal venues!!!
