Events and Reports - 7thorns - Live at The Rock, Copenhagen - November 5th, 2005
Written by Nina

Tonight the promising melodic Power Metal band 7thorns had been given the opportunity to prove themselves in a live situation, warming up for Canadian legends Anvil at Copenhagen's best Rock & Metal club, The Rock.

Like so many times before, The Rock decided to let us wait outside in the rainy Danish weather for about an hour before opening up a good bit later than announced. It's a shame that it has to be this way every time there's a show, when The Rock otherwise appear to be pretty well-organized.

Inside the huge Metal bar, the wet jackets were put away at the wardrobe, beers were ordered at the bar and likeminded Metalheads met up. The DJ had dusted off the good ol' 80's records and treated us to the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rush, Skid Row and other classic acts, helping to set the mood.

Danish newcomers 7thorns, who have impressed quite a bit with their melodic and semi-neoclassical demo took the stage and started out with a new song called Aligned With Divinity. Except for a few headbanging ladies in the front, the crowd approached the band with a lazy sort of curiosity, rather than wild enthusiasm. 7thorns had something to prove and fans to win over.

The two first songs played sounded a lot like the songs from the demo, which means very melodic with a good dose of capturing harmonies. Quite promising! Artificial Night shook up the crowd a bit, and made your faithful RevelationZ reporter jump around and bang her head. Very good!

Unfortunately the band seemed a little too shy and held back on stage. Especially the singer, Thomas, who is of course a front figure of the band didn't seem like the situation was comfortable or fun to him. Taking into account that he is an experienced musical singer, this surprised me. Nevertheless, the band had a certain aura of insecurity to them. This is a shame, since the band did very well on the musical side, and here Thomas' background absolutely is showing, what a clear and beautiful voice!

Drummer Lars did give the impression of loving to be on stage, with a big smile on his face and even holding eye contact with the audience. Guitarist Munk appeared very energetic and it looked like he was having a good time as well.

Another new song was presented to the audience, Glow Of Dawn, followed up by the very catchy Until Freedom Last Forever, a song everyone could instantly sing a long to. 7thorns definitely knows how to make a Power Metal song; only thing missing is a little touch of originality to set them apart from the flock for real. But the essential character and the talent for writing good melodies are there, and that is a great start!

The great Metal Will Show You The Way ended 7thorns' set, and actually it seemed like it was all over just as the band had managed to catch the audience a bit more, and felt more comfortable on stage. This cool song made me go a little amok again, and on the musical side it must be said that 7thorns played fine and Thomas' clear voice impressed! People were warmed up pretty well for tonight's main act, Anvil and that was the point, after all.

Technically it was a fine concert, and there is nothing to complain about regarding the musical know-how of 7thorns. The material sounded good and catchy. What was missing was a better contact to the audience, an ability to get "out over the stage". The band didn't give the impression that this exact hall was the place they would rather be in the whole world, and to have that attitude is very important. To get the impression that the band lives to do what they do in this very moment.

I do believe that 7thorns can make it in the music scene. They are good musicians, and Thomas is a strong singer. A little more of an own identity and more attitude is crucial now.
