Sunday, February 20, 2011 - Nightwish - New Album Details Revealed
Nightwish mainman Tuomas Holopainen has revealed more details about the band's upcoming "Imaginarium" album and movie project.

The new Nightwish CD includes an epic 20-minute track which may or may not be split into two sections during the mastering. Orchestral arrangements by Pip Williams and assorted Celtic instrumentation by Troy Donockley will once again make an appearance on the new album (as they did on 2007's "Dark Passion Play). However, according to Holopainen, two of the tracks on "Imaginarium" will have no orchestral score whatsoever. There are also some very interesting new sounds in the mix.

"We are using a wide array of ethnic instruments like the Taiko drums and the zurna on 'Imaginarium' The choir parts are yet again delivered by The Metro Voices," Tuomas said.

The movie "Imaginarium", directed by Stobe Harju, will follow the album's theme and story closely and will also include dialogue. All the preliminary screenplay work is finished and the storyboards are now done but no actors or actresses have yet been cast. In Holopainen's estimation, mainly unknown actors would be the best choice for the film as "unfamiliar faces tend to leave more space to the viewers' imagination."

No shooting locations have been chosen so far.

Holopainen has a decidedly low-key attitude towards the entire movie project. He has personally adopted a humble "straight-to-DVD" mentality but adds that "of course, it would be great" to experience the movie in a proper theater setting one day. "Time will tell whether we are able to stage some special viewings in select movie theaters in Finland and maybe Sweden and Germany as well," he said. "But I'm gonna be super-happy with even a DVD release."

The underlying themes of "Imaginarium" are a positive outlook and a certain "carpe diem" attitude to life.

"Because 'Dark Passion Play' turned out to be the band's darkest and heaviest album to date, this time I wanted to be inspired by love and the beauty of the world," stated Holopainen.

With regards to the similarity of the name and the concept of "Imaginarium" to Terry Gilliam's 2009 feature film "The Imaginarium Of Dr. Panassus", Holopainen maintains that he came upon his concept for the album - and the name "Imaginarium" - approximately two years ago while vacationing and traveling in Australia. He has yet to see "The Imaginarium Of Dr. Panassus" but admits to having already purchased a DVD copy of the film.

Friday, February 11, 2011 - Nightwish Reveals New Album And Film Plans
In the midst of recording a new album, Finnish/Swedish symphonic metallers Nightwish have been preparing a movie.

"Imaginarium" is a music fantasy film based on the forthcoming Nightwish album of the same title and its 13 songs.

The protagonist of the film is a songwriter with an otherworldly imagination. He is an old man who still thinks he's a young boy. While asleep, he travels into his distant past where his dreams of old come back to him mixed to the young boy's world of fantasy and music.

In his dreams the old man fights to find the memories most important to him.

This unprecedented project originated more than two years ago when Nightwish keyboardist and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen first introduced his ambitious idea of the "Imaginarium" concept to his bandmates and to Stobe Harju, the director of Nightwish's "The Islander" music video. Harju will helm this full-length feature, which will be produced by Solar Films Inc. along with Nightwish.

The "Imaginarium" filming will begin this spring and the movie will have its premiere in 2012.

Nightwish will hold a press conference related to this project at the end of February.

Saturday, July 17, 2010 - Nightwish to begin recording new album in October
Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish has issued the following update:

"Almost exactly four years ago we gathered into an idyllic place in the small village of Sävi to rehearse and arrange what would later be called "Dark Passion Play". It was such glorious and inspiring times that we decided to do something similar with the upcoming Nightwish album called ..........."

"I have 12 songs completed now, but am still working with some lyrics. It's been an immensely fruitful songwriting process, as well as very consuming and ponderous. But I feel more satisfied with the stuff than ever before. Don't know if it's a good sign or bad. To me, the album sounds like a rollercoaster ride in a theme park designed by Neil Gaiman, Tim Burton and Salvador Dali. That's the best way I can put it at this point".

"Like before, we will record a demo once the songs are arranged, to listen to and to perfect the material, and to give to Mr. Pip Williams so he can start with the orchestration process. The actual enter-the-studio-date is set for October 15th. Again, the London orchestra and choir will be there, as well as Mr. Troy Donockley playing a slightly bigger part this time. And loads of new elements 'n' twists we haven't tried before!"

Monday, October 13, 2008 - Nightwish - 'Anette Is Already 100% Recovered'
After weeks of speculation which saw the final four dates of the American tour wiped away, followed by the cancellation of their Moscow debut, Nightwish management has expounded on the situation exclusively to BW&BK, thanking fans for their sympathy, well wishes and support. "Anette is already 100% recovered. She was performing with PAIN (Peter Tägtgren, also of Hypocrisy) here in Helsinki at Tavastia Club last Thursday (Oct. 9th)... a killer show!" While the Moscow and Porte Alegre, Brazil fiascos were attributed to the promoters failing to meet provisions in the contract, some cynics wondered aloud whether this was merely a smokescreen for Anette Olzon's continued recuperation. "The Russian cancellation had nothing to do with her," reassures the Nightwish camp. "We can't just go to Russia if we're uncertain we'll get paid. 23 persons, a truckload of gear and pyrotechnics, you can only guess how much (money) we still lost... flights, visas and at least a week of office work, for fuckin' nothing!"

Nightwish closes out the 2008 touring cycle with a string of South American shows, including 10 in Brazil, before heading home for an extended holiday season. The band will take some well warranted time off until the start of a month long European tour, beginning in March.

Thursday, May 24, 2007 - The new voice of Nightwish
An era in Nightwish's history came to it's end in October 2005, and now in 2007, it's time to start a new one!

The new vocalist of Nightwish has been the source of a lot of speculation over the past year and a half - but now all the speculations can end. After going through over 2000 applications, Nightwish has now chosen their new frontwoman!

She's Swedish, her vocal talent and lovely personality made a lasting impression on Nightwish's members upon her very first visit to Finland, and her name is: Anette Olzon.

Musical background in her own words:

"I was raised in a musical family and I've been singing since childhood. My mom also forced me to play the oboe for 8 years! I toured constantly with my mom and her band in my childhood, sometimes I even sang on stage with them.

After I turned 13, I started competing in several talent shows. I joined my first real band when I was 17, it was a cover band and all the other musicians were older than me. After playing cover songs, I joined a band called Alyson Avenue, first just as a studio singer, later as their leading lady. We've released 2 albums since 2000.

At the age of 21, I played the leading role in a rock opera/musical called "Gränsland" in Helsingborg. After that I got in to the Balettakademien in Gothenburg. In addition to the already mentioned, I've been in several other bands over the years, I've sung in choirs, done studio work for various projects and I've even occasionally been a wedding singer. Recently I sang a duet with Michael Bormann (ex-Jaded Heart-singer) on his album "Conspiracy". During my singing career I've sung nearly every kind of music that there is!

In my earlier days I took singing lessons at the Copenhagen Music Conservatorie, in Helsingör, Denmark with a private teacher. Nowadays, when its needed, I take lessons from a private teacher at the Malmö Music University."

A video message from Anette can be viewed here and at this link you will find more video footage. An interview is also available as well as a fact sheet.

Friday, November 10, 2006 - An update from Nightwish
Tuomas Holopainen has posted the following entry in the online Nightwish diary:

"I'm writing this while flying back to Finland from Hamburg, Germany. We spent the weekend there with Ewo & Toni (King Foo), meeting some people from the publishing company and Nuclear Blast. They wanted to hear some new Nightwish demo songs and make some preliminary plans for the year 2007. The meeting went really well, one broken stereo system, due to listening to the new songs far too loud, and a bunch of happy big bosses. The feedback from them was very flattering, which naturally gave us loads of confidence. We also chose the upcoming single songs.

The discussion went on in the evening in our hotel room. Posing in the cover of latest Talouselämä (Financial lives) magazine, business guru Holopainen decided to draw back from the conversation, since he didn't understand anything of the jargon they were talking about. I'm happy to leave the money issues etc. to those smarter than me.

In a few moments I find myself in Clochard bar, hammering nails into a wooden log, and drinks into my head. Kapanen, the legendary keeper of the Hamburg rock shop, and Ville of HIM are also there. Kapanen wins this extremely simple but addictive hammer-a-nail-into-a-log-game every time. But hey, he was the only one sober.

The journey continued into another bar, where Ewo and Toni also joined us. This girl, hanging from an aluminum pole, was having a birthday. Ville and I sang a 'Happy Birthday' song to her (Ville sang, I sounded like Evinrude-engine in distress), a gesture which gave us free drinks for the rest of the night. One way of making it cheap, I guess.

A couple of weeks ago I visited Emppu in his studio in Kerava, Finland, checking out his progress with the guitars he's been recording for the upcoming Nightwish album. He had 13/15 done of the comp guitars. 4 comp guitars with 2 different sounds (Bogner + Engl & MesaBoogie + Marshall). In addition to these, he will record 2 more guitars here 'n there with a special sound, plus leads and solos. This is pretty much the same way we recorded guitars for the Once album. Everything he's done so far sounds simply fantastic, and played with utmost care. First Jukka`s better-than-ever effort and then this.

I feel very proud of the guys.

The very next day we tested another vocalist canditate. She came to the studio to sing some new songs. Sounded astonishingly good! She sang one of the new slower songs with such soul it made the songwriter bite his lip instead of producing.

Read the rest of the report here.

Then guitars, bass and demo keyboards, followed by orchestral/choir recordings. After those, the final synths and vocals will be recorded. Monday, January 30, 2006 - Tuomas posts Nightwish update
Here are the latest news from Tuomas regarding Nightwish:

It`s been 3 months since the last show in Hartwall Arena and things are finally calming down. I just read through the yet unfinished version of the upcoming Nightwish-book. I was very impressed. It made me feel nostalgic, happy, ashamed and sad at the same time. This book is written by Mr. Mape Ollila and it`s being finished as we speak. The Finnish version of the book will be released in May. Also the live dvd "End Of An Era" will be released later this year but we have no information about the exact release date yet.

At the moment I`m occupied with writing songs for the next Nightwish album. 14 pieces done so far. I`m also participating in Timo Rautiainen`s solo album, the new For My Pain album, and some Kotiteollisuus´ live gigs before summer. With Nightwish we will start rehearsing the new stuff in June, entering the studio in September. Again we will write a diary through this site so you guys know what`s happening while in the studio. New Nightwish-homepage will also see daylight soon.

At the moment Emppu has his own side projects, Marco is working with the new Tarot-album and Jukka is busy with his new project, unrelated to music business.

The new singer will be announced through this site when the time comes. Please believe in nothing that`s not confirmed on this page.

Spirits up,
Tuomas

Saturday, November 12, 2005 - Excerpts from Tarja Turunen´s press conference
A 90-minute video of former Nightwish frontwoman Tarja Turunen's press conference - held in Helsinki, Finland on November 11 - to discuss her split from the group and her future plans, has been posted online at this location (NOTE: The press conference was conducted in Finnish).

A Nightwish fan by the name of "Niko" (from the group's official forum) has posted the following summary of the things Turunen said during the press conference:

* Tarja doesn't think that business is "necessary evil." Instead she thinks that getting money is a good thing. She reminds that the band shares all the money equally and no band member has funded his part to charity. She also says that if she had preferred money over music she would have accepted to [make guest appearances with] all those heavy bands who have asked her to do so.

* Tarja says about the things she said in an airplane (that she could leave Nightwish at any time, giving them only one day's warning in advance) that she was angry and didn't really mean that she would do so. She said that any band member could leave the band at any time. But she gave the band two and half year's warning in advance (meaning she had already told them to leave the band after the next album and tour).

* Tarja says that the reason she never came to rehearsals before recording was that the band had worked that way since the beginning and no one had asked her to come practice. Instead she had practised the songs at home with the demo tape. About flying, she says she preferred flying because she couldn't sleep well in the bus.

* Tarja says she never underestimated fans. About the Oslo gig, she says, she was informed about the concert after it was already sold out and she had already made other plans. She said she has to rest enough or she loses her voice. She points out that the gig was not cancelled and Norwegian fans are as important to her as any other fans.

* Tarja doesn't understand why the band blames Marcelo. She says that all band members had an own technician helping with the instruments. Her "technician" was Marcelo who, for example, often arranged her private room where she could change her clothes during the concert.

* Tarja is still very sad about the way she was fired. She starts to cry when she is talking about that.

* In the future Tarja is going to start her solo career and she is going to keep some elements of heavy metal in her music. She also said she will be interested about the next Nightwish album and she may even go to watch some of their gigs.

Turunen is scheduled to meet with the English-speaking press on Monday, November 14 in Berlin, Germany to discuss her split with the group and her future plans.

Tuesday, October 25, 2005 - Tarja Turunen Releases Statement
The saga of the booting of singer Tarja Turunen continues, as she has released the following statement:

"Since last Sunday morning, I have been asked to express my position by magazines, newspapers, radio and TV stations, fan clubs and fans from Finland and from all over the world. So many in total that it is physically impossible for me to find the time to reply to them all individually. Hence I decided to put down a couple of words in this text to let my fans, family and friends and the public know how I feel after the recent events.

This is a moment of grief and pain and I find it very hard to speak.

At the moment I am in Argentina. I hope you can understand that after this shocking life change comparable to a divorce, I didn't want to stay alone at home in Finland. My husband had booked his tickets to Argentina many months ago and I decided to travel with him at the last minute. But the fact that I am in Argentina and the long distance should of course not be an excuse not to comment on the situation.

Last Friday 21st of October was a day the whole band had been waiting for a long time. Practice started early in the morning. I was very sick and nervous because of the fact that I was not even able to sing during the rehearsals. Also nervous because the concert programme was going to be longer than usual for a Nightwish concert. Furthermore we were going to have a special guest to perform with us, more wardrobe changes for myself than usual and for the first time big screens and bigger production on stage. Not to forget that the concert was going to be recorded and filmed. The five of us had finally made it to play Hartwall Arena.

Even though every one of us knew in advance that the concert was sold out, finally on stage, we saw that screaming, applauding and standing people took every seat. The feeling was unbelievable. I will never forget how amazing it was to experience the Finnish audience's gorgeous reception.

When the concert was over, I cried of happiness on stage. Happy tears because I was able to do my best as always even though I was sick. Happy tears because our long tour got the greatest possible ending and happy tears because of the best recognition an artist can get: applause and smiling faces. At that moment I didn't know that I was going to cry again soon.

After the concert, the guys of the band invited me backstage to join them and asked me to hug altogether. This felt strange as it was the same kind of hug we traditionally came together for before every concert. That tradition remained between us, even though the tension and increasing pressure already existed since a long period of time.

The immediate feeling in me was to thank them, which I did loudly but without any reply.

After this, they gave me a letter and asked me to read it the following day. The same letter that is now public.

I read it and was shocked. I didn't know what to say and still at the moment that I am writing these lines, I don't.

I sense great anger in that letter and I continue to have very confused feelings about it, but I don't want to reply to this anger with an even greater anger. Private matters should never be taken to the public.

I know this moment we are going through is very sad for everybody, including the guys.

While there would have been so many different possibilities and ways to express what they wanted to tell me with the letter, I remain unable to understand the way they chose to handle this. I am sorry that the guys got me so wrong. I don't recognize myself at all from the way they described me.

They mentioned mean things about me, but the fact that they involved Marcelo, my husband, crossed the line. He is the man I love, my friend and has been my biggest support over the last years.

We have been band mates for 9 years, experienced good times and not so good ones. I thought I knew them, but I was wrong.

Still everything that has happened is not enough to make them evil in my eyes.

Now comes a time to calm down and reflect upon all of this.

I need to put my feelings together again and I promise to come back to public soon.
I will announce a press conference where I will be talking about my future plans. This doesn't mean that you should expect this conference to be an instrument to attack anybody. It won't.

The wonderful music we created together won't be touched by recent events.

Thanks a lot to all the people who are supporting me during these sad times. My family, friends, colleagues, and the great number of fans. I love you and I really feel I have not failed you."

Monday, October 24, 2005 - Tarja comments on Nightwish firing
Tarja Turunen has commented on being fired from Nightwish and says that she is shocked at the way she was dismissed. "I'm really upset. The way in which this was brought up publicly is cruel and sad," Tarja told Finland's YLE. "It wasn't enough that the letter talked about me, but the way in which my husband was also dragged into it is shocking."

She added that she will give her side of the story in a press conference sometime in November. Tarja, who studied classical singing at the Music University of Karlsruhe, Germany, had already launched a solo career.

Sunday, October 23, 2005 - Nightwish Fires Tarja Turunen
The somewhat shocking news is explained to Tarja Turunen, now former lead vocalist in Nightwish, in an open letter from Nightwish mainman and keyboardist Toumas Holopainen:

"Dear Tarja,

It's time to choose whether the story of Nightwish ends here or whether it will still continue an undetermined period of time. We've been working with this creation for 9 years and we are not ready to give up yet. Nightwish is a way of life, something to live for, and we're certain we can't let it go.

Equally certain is the fact that we cannot go on with you and Marcelo any longer. During the last year something sad happened, which I've been going over in my head every single day, morning and night. Your attitude and behavior don't go with Nightwish anymore. There are characteristics I would never have believed to see in my old dear friend. People who don't talk with each other for a year do not belong in the same band.

We are involved in an industry where the business side of things is a necessary evil and something to worry about all the time. We are also a band which has always done music from the heart, because of friendship and the music itself. The mental satisfaction should always be more important than money! Nightwish is a band, it's an emotion.

To you, unfortunately, business, money, and things that have nothing to do with those emotions have become much more important. You feel that you have sacrificed yourself and your musical career for Nightwish, rather than thinking what it has given to you. This attitude was clearly shown to me in the two things you said to me in an airplane in Toronto: 'I don't need Nightwish anymore,' and 'Remember, Tuomas, that I could leave this band at any time, giving you only one day's warning in advance.'

I can't simply write any more songs for you to sing.

You have said yourself that you are merely a 'guest musician' in Nightwish. Now that visit ends and we will continue Nightwish with a new female vocalist. We're sure this is an equally big relief to you as it is for us. We have all been feeling bad long enough.

You told us that no matter what, the next Nightwish album will be your last one. However, the rest of us want to continue as long as the fire burns. So there's no sense in doing that next album with you, either.

The four of us have been going over this situation countless times and we have realized that this is the thing we want to do in life. It's all we can do. In December 2004, in Germany, you said that you will never tour again for more than two weeks at a time. You also said that we can forget about U.S. and Australia because the fees and the sizes of venues are too small.

In interviews I've mentioned that if Tarja leaves, that would be the end of the band. I understand that people will think this way. Nightwish is, however, a scenery of my soul and I'm not ready to let go because of one person. A person who wants to focus her creativity to somewhere else, a person whose values don't match mine.

We were never bothered by the fact that you didn't participate in writing/arranging songs, you never in 9 years came to rehearse the songs with us before going to the studio. Not the fact that while on tour you always wanted to fly, separately from us with your husband. Not the fact that you are an undisputable front image of the band. We accepted and felt OK about everything except greed, underestimating the fans, and breaking promises. It was agreed by the five of us that Nightwish would be the priority in everything that we do during 2004-2005. Still so many things were more important to you. The ultimate example being the already sold-out show in Oslo, which you wanted to cancel because you needed to rehearse for your solo concerts, meet frieds and go to the movies. Those were the words Marcelo used in an e-mail explaining the cancellation. This being just one example of so many. I couldn't think of a worse way of being selfish and dismissing our fans.

Nightwish is a way of life and a job with many obligations. To each other and to the fans. With you we can't take care of those duties anymore.

Deep within we don't know which one of you drove us to this point. Somehow Marcelo has changed you from the lovely girl you were into a diva, who doesn't think or act the way she used to. You are too sure of your irreplaceableness and status.

It's obvious that you blame your stress and misery on us four. And you think we don't respect or listen to you. Believe us; We have always had the uppermost respect towards you as a wonderful vocalist and as a friend. And very often during the past couple of years the plans were made according to your decisions only. You were always the only one who wanted more money from the shows.

This 'compensation and more money from everything' attitude is the fact that we are most disappointed of!

We wish that from now on you will listen to your heart instead of Marcelo. Cultural differences combined with greed, opportunism and love is a dangerous combination. Do not wither yourself.

This decision is not something we are especially proud of but you gave us no choice. The gap between us is too wide. And the decision is made by us four unanimously. We are beyond the point where things could be settled by talking.

All the best for your life and career,

Tuomas

Emppu Jukka Marco."

Friday, July 15, 2005 - Nightwish news
The greatest export of the Finnish music industry, Nightwish, will once again up the ante in terms of how far a Finnish group can take their show. On October 21, Nightwish will bring their performance to the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki. This is something a very few Finnish acts have accomplished and the magnitude of the show is second to none.

"Once Upon A Tour 2004-2005" has been selling out venues around the world for nearly 18 months and the group are now keen to end the tour on their home turf. At more than 150 shows on all continents, more than one million spectators have witnessed the Nightwish spectacle. The Hartwall Arena show will be their last before Nightwish take a lengthy break, estimated to last for at least 18 months, during which they will compose and record the follow-up to their highly successful "Once" album.

To add fuel to the fire, Nightwish have decided to film the show for future release as a full-length DVD. The director will be Antti Jokinen, who has previously worked with the group on the "Nemo" clip. The show will be recorded with 20 cameras, which is unheard of in Finland. But then again, not many bands have sold 2.5 million records and are able to present a spectacle featuring such an arsenal of sound, light, visuals and pyro effects.

Nightwish's last Finnish appearance before this summer's three festival shows took place at the Helsinki Icehall on December 26, 2004. It didn't take more than a few hours to sell out the 6,500-capacity venue.

The night at the Hartwall Arena will be kicked off by Sonata Arctica. The band will complement their ongoing Finnish festival tour with a 14-show European trek, which will take them through eight countries. In addition to this very special appearance, Sonata Arctica will only perform a few selected Finnish dates this year. The band's latest album, "Reckoning Night", has also been one the greatest success stories in Finnish metal.

Tickets for this unique event will go on sale on July 25 at 9:00 a.m. through Lippupalvelu.

The concert is presented in cooperation with Radio City, whose metal program, "Rautakanki", will offer special features and contests regarding this event, as well as SUE magazine, the biggest music magazine in Finland.
