Now Playing: Robby Valentine - Robby Valentine (Japanese Edition) | Judging from my first impression this debut meets my high expectations after the amazing discovery that was, The Magic Infinity. This is not as refined, slightly overproduced and overly emotional in a candid, romantic way, but all these things play up to the overblown fashion that cloaks the music, and I can easily forgive slight missteps, when everything is delivered, as straight from the heart, and with as much passion, as is the case here. If you like this approach, then this is a melodic rock gem worth hunting down. Songs like The Magic Breeze, The Gift of Life, Over and Over Again and the cover version of one of my favorite Beatles songs, Here, There and Everywhere are current favorites. Sweet! Now Playing: Wolf - Legions of Bastards | Classic Heavy Metal with a great vibe that makes you clench your fist and feel the urge to headbang in happy union with the closest metal fan you can find . Skull Crusher and Tales From the Crypt are personal favorites at the moment.
The album may not be as immediately captivating as Ravenous but I have a feeling there is still lots of bite in this one. Aauuuuu! Posted by Steen - Thursday, June 30, 2011

Now Playing: Avantasia - Angel of Babylon | I never gave this album a chance (nor The Wicked Symphony album), It took me some time to unpack the album and give it a spin. Then, a few days ago, I put my Ipod on shuffle while riding my bike then " Stargazers" popped up. My first thought was: "oh no not Avantasia.." "The Scarecrow" is still haunting me. However, I couldn't stop traffic, so I had to listen to the first track of the album. Now, I really like that song and I'm willing to give the album a chance ... I think. I'm very fond of the beginning and I love the: "Oh craving devour me, release me, please, take me away, to infinity, oh take me away, craving devour me, take me, take me away" and the guitar solo along, great stuff, works very well! " Symphony of Life", two words: ear rape. Posted by Sandra - Sunday, May 29, 2011

Comments: 116 | | Haha, yip I couldn't sum up Symphony Of Life any better. It sounds like some awful attempt to do a song in the style of Lacuna Coil (although why anyone in their right mind would want to do that,
I just don't know)
I really like Death Is Just a Feeling and a few others but overall (like many double albums) you could combine the best of this and Wicked Symphony to make a much better album.

Comments: 5 Ratings: 1 | | I agree with Stuart that if you took the best tracks from "Angel of Babylon" and "Wicked Symphony" and combined them, you'd have a really great release. That being said, the latter is clearly the better disc of the two. There is a good deal of variety - from what I would consider hard rock to power metal. It's definitely worth a few listens to get the feel for it, as I feel the Avantasia work has greatly surpassed Edguy's recent output. Kudos to Tobias for being able to pull together such vocalists as Kiske, Lande, Allen, Owens, etc.

Comments: 518 | | That would be the result of a tough matter of priorities, since I have limited time for the site at the moment. As for Iconoclast, I am waiting to purchase the two disc special edition of the album. The single disc release, which was pre-released as a promo, is not the definitive version of the album and lack three of the songs to make the concept complete. So if I get a review done it will be of the special edition. The Lotus Effect is still in queue for the first listen.

Now Playing: Redemption - Snowfall on Judgment Day | A beautiful, soo beautiful progressive masterpiece! This is what progressive metal is all about. "Snowfall on Judgment day" was my favorite album of 2009 - same year as "Black Clouds and Silver Linings" by prog. metal legends Dream Theater was released. I'm A huge fan of DT, however this album managed to blow me away instantly ... and it still does! Steen has written an outstanding review of the album, and I pretty much agree with him on most of his points, you can read it here. My favorite song from the album is "Love Kills Us All / Life In One Day" .. breathtaking! Listen to it here. And another personal favorite is "Black and White World" take a listen here. Now Playing: Evergrey - Glorious Collision | I'm enjoying this album more and more. After about 5 listens it really opened up and has been growing exponentially ever since. Not as complex as earlier releases but solid nonetheless. Frozen and To Fit The Mold (brilliant chorus) are a couple of favorites. Tom's voice is the focal point and brings a deep melancholic atmosphere to the music, in a good way. Metaphorically speaking, like a tender steak crying in a pool of blood. Now Playing: Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence | In one of my old playlists, I wrote this (about the 42:04 minute long title track): "When you listen to this song you really run an emotional marathon. Exhausted, that's for sure, but you want to go back and just start it all again"
And I still feel the same about this song. I just listened to it on my 45 minute walk to the university this morning (my bike wasn't working with me this morning) and I wasn't focusing on anything else except the music, just walking in this DT-Six-Degrees-of-Inner-Turbulence-world. It's amazing that it still manages to impress me and to take my breath away! " About to Crash" One thing that irritates me, every single time I listen to the song, is the line: "She has weathered this depression"
I find it very annoying and out of place that they have to point it out, when it's so clear what this girl is dealing with. " Goodnight Kiss" Is such a lovely peaceful song, and that heavenly guitar solo fits perfectly in. " Solitary Shell" The keyboard always puts me in a hyper-happy mood, because it's so freaky in the most positive way ever. "He's a Monday morning lunatic "- love that line. My Monday morning often starts off singing this in my head while I brush my teeth: "she's a Monday morning lunatic" and then I go on ..."A momentary maniac with casual delusions" it really puts me in a great mood... yeah, and then do a little toothbrush-guitar solo. ;-) just for your information. " Losing Time": "She dresses in black every day she keeps her hair simple and plain, she never wears makeup but no one would care if she did anyway" One thing that really amazes me, besides the lyrics, is Mike's drumming, it is as if he waits a second before he hits the drums - it makes the mood calm, but yet intense. Listen to the song : "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" here ...it's 42:04 min (on Youtube it's 42:03min)... but it's 42:04 min. of epicness - I promise! Posted by Sandra - Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Comments: 518 | | A one-of-a-kind song. Absolutely fantastic. "Losing Time" is the pinnacle and my favorite part. Incredible tension and a soaring release after being put though the emotional wringer, in equal parts due to James' glorious singing and Mike's brilliant drumming as you also mention, oh, and the keyboard.

Now Playing: Enuff Z'nuff - Dissonance | This is my first Enuff Z'Nuff album and certainly not my last!!! What an amazing album and band! I've been listening to the album for a while now and I'm still crazy about it, it's so damn catchy. Some of my favorites are: " Joni Lynn" , " Roll Away" and " Lazy Dazy". " Joni Lynn" - was the first song I listened to, because Steen (the webmaster, and a huge Enuff Z'Nuff fan) send it to me, and said that I should take a listen - and I was very impressed. The lyrics are appealing and very emotional. I love singing: " You freak me out again, Joni Lynn" there's just something about that line that I cannot resist! And when Donnie sings: " Gave you my life and you go back to your boyfriend" simply amazing! Take a listen to " Joni Lynn" here. I'm always having a great time while listening/singing along to " Roll Away" in the shower. It's a lovely down to earth song, with a melody that sticks to your mind for the rest of the day - and you will stay in a positive energetic mood - win-win!. The song is also on my "On the go" list on my Ipod, because it's simply outstanding listening to while I'm just walking around...looking at and dreaming of Hi-fi, in the local Hi-fi store...in the great spring weather. Listen to " Roll Away" here, - and if it improves your mood instantly, then "like" this "Now Playing" article :-) And now I have to do some Enuff Z'Nuff CD-shopping ! Now Playing: Essence - Song: "Blood Culture" Album: "Lost in Violence" | I listened to this song for the first time on Monday , and I just can't get it out of my head. The song has that old school sound, which is pretty cool from a modern thrash metal band. I'm a huge fan of the intro; you just don't know what's coming next! That bassline is very spicy and it gives the soundscape an interesting edge. "Blood Culture" is from the band's debut album: "Lost in Violence" which was released on February 25, 2011 - and I can't believe that it's their debut . awesome!! and not to forget : the band has just published their first international tour. It happens as support for the polish death legends, Vader, on their Summer Campaign 2011 tour in June. The full line-up for the tour will also include Brazilian Krisiun and Belgian Resistance. Yeah, it's insane how you can go from just being an unknown Danish Thrash metal band and know going on tour supporting Vader.. pretty amazing. You can listen to the song here
I have to get the album ASAP! Posted by Sandra - Saturday, March 26, 2011

Now Playing: Accept - Blood Of The Nations | Wow! Great album. I was amazed and extremely happy when I heard Mark Tornillo's rough voice. He has a hint of Jon Oliva (Savatage) in his voice when he goes all out, which is absolutely wonderful to hear. "The Abyss", 4:05, "I don't think so!". Say no more. Now Playing: Ralf Scheepers - Scheepers | Ralf Scheepers first solo album is a varied and well-mixed bag of metal anthems. It was an album that didn't strike me as particularly outstanding at first but it grows more interesting with each listen and has not reached its final destination yet. The Pain of the Accused, Doomsday, Remission of Sin and the cover of Judas Priest's Before The Dawn are current favorites. Should be checked out by fans of Primal Fear, Judas Priest, Gamma Ray etc. Posted by Steen - Wednesday, March 16, 2011

Comments: 5 Ratings: 1 | | I picked up a copy of "A Social Grace" from a used CD store back in 1997. All I can say is, what a find. Truly a unique sound - raw progressive metal from a band that is really under-appreciated, even in metal circles. I am envious that you will see them live. I'd love to see them play stateside.

Now Playing: Blind Guardian - At The Edge Of Time | Ohh, yes! After two slightly disappointing albums, At The Edge Of Time comes like a miracle sent straight from the golden halls of Valhalla. Symphonic (the band used a huge orchestra on several tracks), heavy and fast, the album sees Blind Guardian returning to some of the trademarks, that made them so beloved, while still maintaining the never ending evolution and quest for new musical adventures that is the band's signature. Thus delivering an album that is both innovative and still sounds classic Blind Guardian. Sacred Worlds, in its symphonic glory, the melancholic, Nighfall In Middle Earth-ish Tanelorn and closing epic Wheel Of Time are some of the highlights. An album that keeps growing and takes a little time to fully sink in. Posted by Nina - Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Now Playing: Ten - Stormwarning | Four years of silence and suddenly, out of the blue Ten's new album appeared. I never caught the news back in July 2010 that the band was working on new material so imagine my surprise I received this one. My first impression is of a very good album but it does not have the immediate infectious charm of Babylon nor the classic feel of The Name of The Rose. It has something entirely else. There's a sense of niceness that makes me wish for more surprises and more bite in some of the songs. Still, I'm sure Ten fans will rejoice and since Gary Hughes' vocals is pretty much all I need, so am I. There is a back to basics feel to the album but the songs still have the Ten sound. The opener Endless Symphony is suitably big and bombastic, surprisingly tender at its melodious core but undeniably Ten. Mark Zonder joins the band on drums and it can be heard, especially on a song like Center of my universe. As a nice touch the main melody of Destiny is derived from Fly Like an Eagle. After a dozen listens in four days the album appears strong and consistent. It's too early for a full review and it will be interesting to see how the album grows over the coming weeks. Right now it's just great to have Ten back. Posted by Steen - Saturday, January 8, 2011
