Crash Kelly is a new band hailing from Toronto, Canada.
Crash Kelly is the brainchild of Sean Kelly, who formed the band to play some kick ass Rock 'n' Roll rooted in the music of the seventies.
Crash Kelly plays it simple throughout the whole record. They use simple means guitar, bass and drums with additional piano. A song like
Movie is a perfect example. It has a couple of power chords, a great melodic chorus and lots of low hanging guitar all over it.
A great moody guitar is featured on
Love Me Electric. Everything falls into place on this song. The guitar sounds rustic and the piano adds another dimension to the classic rock feel. The piano is also used on the riff driven rocker
You Don't Know.
The harmonies on the chorus to Penny Pills have clear Beatles inspirations, since it sounds like Lennon and McCartney's characteristic harmonies.
The instrumental track
Something Hollywood lives up to title, since it sounds perfect for a soundtrack. It could be used in a high-speed car chase, because some the guitar sounds like it's on dope.
The album ends with a cover of the classic
Rainbow tune
Since You've Been Gone. I love this song, but in order to follow the leitmotif of the record,
Crash Kelly should have made a full blast version. Instead
Crash Kelly changes down the gear and performs a mellower version. Sean Kelly doesn't copy
Ritchie Blackmore characteristic guitar tone, but wisely keep his own sound for the cover version.
The album sounds fresh and is well produced by Ky Anto. The vocals from Sean Kelly are strong throughout "Penny Pills" playing time of 36 minutes.
This kind of music comes alive on stage and since
Crash Kelly supports Enuff Z'Nuff on their UK Tour I look forward to a dose of their high octane Rock 'n' Roll.
Put a cigarette in your mouth, lower the guitar and play it loud MUTHA.
P.S. Notice the Marc Bolan resemblance on the front cover.
