Sunday, September 11, 2005 - Project: Failing Flesh update
Project: Failing Flesh instrumentalist Tim Gutierrez issued this update during recording of vocals for the upcoming CD titled "The Conjoined.":

"Well, we've finaaaaaaally got to laying down some vocals and finishing this thing up. Eric arrived from France (via Montreal) on Wednesday morning and we dove right in. So far things are going smoothly, the vocals are brutal, and the songs are sounding great! He did final vox takes for a cover (which won't appear on the album but will be available free to hear on the site soon) and two originals so far - "Motionless" and "Synesthesia." We'll all be working together til early next week on lyrics, ideas, and final vocal takes so another update may be issued closer to then or just after finishing up. Hopefully we'll have some video clips to put up on the 9mm Movie page soon too. Kev and I compiled a small amount of footage during earlier sessions for this disc and we'll capture some of Eric in action as well. We still have no release date for the album but we're all really looking forward to getting to the mix/mastering stage so this thing will be ready to go for people to hear when the time arrives."

More information is available at their official website.

Band Profile

What is your name and your current position in the band?

Tim Gutierrez - instruments

Tell us about the history of the band. More specifically, when was the band formed, how did you meet, and have there been any particular highlights or low points in your career, any crucial events that have taken you where you are today?

The band is myself, Kevin 131, and Eric Forrest (E-Force,ex-Voivod). Kevin and I formed the band several years ago as a fun studio thing. As we had completed a bunch of songs that we thought were cool we decided to search for a vocalist. After a few guys in our area didn't work out we contacted Eric and he was up for it and that remains the line-up. Highlights have been the release of our two albums while low points have been label problems and assorted delays that we have not had control over.

Was there ever a time when you wondered if your band would remain just a local outfit and never make it in the industry?

That was never much of a concern. The main priority was to do the best music we possibly could and have fun doing it. That is still in effect really. Everything that follows is just a bonus.

What is your latest album and why should people buy it?

"The Conjoined" is the title and people should buy it because it holds all the answers to life's great mysteries haha. Also it will make them irresistible to the opposite sex (or, same sex, if they are into that sort of thing. Yikes.. haha).

How would you categorize the style of the band? And did you ever consider or try playing other styles of music than the one(s) you are playing now?

Outside of the box, extreme metal with some experimentation is a good vague description I guess. Yeah, we have played other styles of music. We are big fans of all different sorts of stuff so we explore that as well. To just do one thing would be kind of limiting. But within P:FF we try to keep it heavy and dark for the most part. Though we allow ourselves to bring in any influence that we feel fits the band.

Can you share with us one or two of your favourite moments with the band?

Personally my favourite moments have been when we receive the finished versions of the albums with the artwork and everything. To pop it in the stereo, crank it up, and hold the finished thing and feel that sense of accomplishment. Also maybe the first time Eric came to the studio and sang over the stuff and we all realized it was going to click well and sound cool. That was pretty exciting.

How is the writing process in the band?

We usually bring in riffs, drum ideas or whatever that we've done on our own and present them in the studio. Then the coolest stuff we try to develop into rough "sketch" forms of songs. From there it's basically a matter of revisiting the stuff and adding and/or taking away and reshaping until it feels finished. Drums and guitar usually come first. Then the rest of the instruments. Vocals usually are the final part.

What brought you on the path to becoming a musician? Did you ever consider or take any other paths through life besides music?

At a very young age hearing cool albums and going "Wow, I want to do THAT!" Then picking up guitar or whatever instrument and realizing it's something fun and cool and having the drive to continue to develop your skills. Music is a main interest but we have other stuff in life besides music. At some point growing up it kind of becomes clear you need other interests to be well rounded. If it was all music all the time it would be boring and you'd be a pretty boring person away from music.

Do you have any idols? If yes, who?

The bands that have influenced us I guess. So many that there is no way to start to name them all. Here's a very short list. Slayer, Venom, Voivod, Kreator, Prong, Swans, Cop Shoot Cop, Moonshake, Entombed, Godflesh, Laika, Curve, Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Priest, ACDC, Emperor, Arcturus, etc, etc.

Do you have any regrets looking back at your career? For example any songs or even full albums that you regret recording? If so, what made you regret it?

No regrets so far. I'm proud of all the music we've done!! Even some of the business stuff that hasn't quite gone to plan I couldn't change because at the time we always tried to make what we thought was the best decision and couldn't have predicted the outcome... negative or positive.

Are there particular songs in your catalogue that the fans love but you're not particular fond of yourself?

Nope. As in the last question, I like all our songs!!

How important do you rate the lyrical side of your albums?

Fairly important. Stupid or poorly written lyrics turn us off immediately. I mean... our lyrics are done by all three of us at the same time so we all have to approve an idea or line for it to make it there.

What do you think about the state of the music industry today?

The big labels are losing their hold on ALL the power. For ages, unless you had a label it was tough to do much. Now with cheaper home recording and the internet the playing field is a bit more level. Anyone can reach people. Though it's still easier with distro and promo help a label provides it's not impossible. So that seems cool to me. Or at least overall better. Maybe not financially but for the bottom line of just getting your music heard and out there... which is most important anyway.

What do you think is the best way to fight music piracy?

It doesn't need to be fought. Music shouldn't be commerce anyway. I'm realistic enough to know there is a business side to it and to some extent that has to be taken into account. But basically if someone is interested enough to want to hear us that is great... no matter how. We never started this band or playing music in general as something we thought would bring in a ton of money.

Do you have a life philosophy? If yes, what is it?

Be cool!!

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

Wake up, clean up, listen, watch, eat, work, play, eat, watch, read, listen, sleep, repeat.

What do you like to spend your time with besides music?

TV, reading, movies, computer, pets, family, friends, etc

What's the craziest thing that has ever happened on a tour?

The craziest thing is we don't desire to be a touring band.

You're heading off to live on a deserted island for a couple of years with your portable entertainment system... Which albums, movies or books would you bring? (Max. 3 of each)

Albums: Swans - Children of God, Slayer - Reign in Blood, and Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors.

Movies: Best of Riley Mason - Vol. 1, Best of Riley Mason - Vol. 2, and Best of Riley Mason - Vol. 3!!!!

Books: The Encyclopedia, a First Aid Guide, and Recipes and Cooking Tips For Desert Island Survivors.

What is your favourite joke?

Q) What did the drummer get on his IQ test?
A) Drool.

Can you tell us about any future plans for you and your band?

Right now we are working on a third album. There's already a bunch of songs and other ideas for it. We've tracked some basic parts already. So over the next couple years will work on and finish up as time allows. Maybe someday get out and play a show or two.

Thanks for answering these questions. Now you are free to write a few lines to our readers.
