Hello Everyone,
My name is David Atkinson. My friends know me as The Fat Friar. That's the name of my band, of whom, I've always been the only member. It's also the name of my music "Company". I chose that name because I'm a little large in the belly area, I like fine German Hefe Weizen, and I love God. Plus I was always fond of Friar Tuck in the Robin Hood stories.
I am married to a beautiful red-head named Jodi. We have two great dogs; Macadum and Bryce. I am a multi-instrumentalist. My first instrument learned was Drums at the age of 13, then guitar taught to me by some friends I was in a band with. Bass was easy to pick up and I later found the joy of keyboards. I write my own material, music and lyrics. I have one friend that I write with and he's an excellent lead guitarist so I have him do any solos I may need. I have built a home studio where I write and record everything. I am also friends with the Hashman. We are mutual metal lovers and there is more than one metal-head here in Nashville, Tn.
Other than writing and playing music I love nothing more than listening to music.
My favorite style of music is metal but I listen to anything that has a good hook regardless of style. Well except new country music. Oh, God rescue us all from new country!
My history concerning metal starts with Dio's first album "Holy Diver". I learned to play drums the way I do now because of Vinnie Appice and Dio's first three albums.
Soon after, I heard Metallica's "Master of Puppets" and was blown away. I still listen to that album today. Probably once or twice a month. Well I just started going to Camelot music stores (1980's) and buying stuff all the time. They had a metal section and as soon as I had enough cash to buy a metal tape I was there looking for something new. I often just went by the album artwork itself as to what I would buy next. Most things were good and I usually got my money's worth. I loved speed metal like Destruction and Forbidden, Bay Area Thrash like Exodus and Death Angel, I liked melodic thrash core like Faith No More. I found progressive metal like Fates Warning's first four records to be intriguing and they expanded my thoughts on drums. I used to could play the "Awaken The Guardian" Album note for note on the drums. Man that was a blast! From there I found stuff like Death. What an awesome band. I remember finding Gorguts and Candlemass, Dream Theater, Watchtower, Helloween, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Malmsteen, Steve Vai and Satch.
So many great bands I can't list them all! Then my faith in God took a new hold on me and I started listening to Christian bands like Tourniquet and Deliverance, still heavy but faith based lyrics. Entombed's "Left Hand Path" Wow! drop tuned guitars , heavy and fast! awesome! You name it and I've probably heard it. So many styles and so much to choose from. Metal started to rise to the forefront of popular music and then it collapsed back into the underground where it belongs. At least that's my opinion. I would say that the only style of metal I never liked was Black metal. Strictly based on lyrical content. Those guys can play as well as most but I don't like the hopelessness and anger they express lyrically. I'm pretty much a happy guy but I have my down day's too like everyone else. It doesn't make me want to feed on the darkness like those bands do though, so I stay away from it.
Other than My Wife and God, music is the core of my existence. I have an overly expensive sound system in my little truck that I installed and I crank the metal on a daily basis. With the sterling production metal records achieve these days it is a complete blast listening to metal. As we all know that wasn't always the case with a lot of old metal records. A far as my own music goes it comes out all different way's. I have acoustic instrumental stuff in the vein of Will Ackerman and Michael Hedges. I write Modern Rock like Foo Fighter's and Collective Soul. When I write with my buddy Justin it comes out like a blend of Classic Rock and Modern Rock. My flame is metal though and I have decided to give it a try as well. I am going to write a metal record and play all the instruments and do the vocals as well. When it's done I'll throw it out there and see if I get any bites. Hopefully love bites, not blood bites!
That's me in a nutshell,
Metal will always rule!
