Grave - Back From The Grave
Back From The Grave is the sixth album (not counting live and re-releases) from the old Swedish death metal band Grave. The band had its debut in 1991 with the album "Into The Grave" - and now here in 2002 they're back from the grave. Their style is old school metal, and it reminds me of an old favorite band of mine - Entombed. Actually the former front man Jörgen Sandström left Grave to play in Entombed.

I get a certain feeling of nostalgia when listening to Grave - it reminds of the good old days, when death metal was simple and straight-forward. But while Grave is simple and straight-forward it is also very groovy and brutal.

One of the best tracks on this album in Rise - it is a catchy song with some great guitar riffs and with a very groovy rhythm. There is a good flow in the song, and the vocals are nicely brutal. Dead Is Better is also a good song - it is pretty slow, but in a good and groovy way. The double bass drums are playing non stop in it, and we all know you can't get enough of double bass drums.

The problem with this album is the lack of variation in the songs. The songs simply sound too much alike. There are two or three exceptions, but my overall impression is that the album is too monotonous. One of the better songs besides the ones I already mentioned is Thorn To Pieces - it has an evil-sounding intro with a women screaming and a man saying something in Latin. Again we are not dealing with fast death metal, rather slow and more rhythm-oriented death metal. This is great, and it has its own charm.

My final judgment of this album must be that it has some really good moments, and some more unfortunate ones. If you like the former Grave albums, or if you're a fan of Entombed, there is a good chance you might like this album. I wouldn't say that it is a must buy in any way though. I rate this album 6.5/10.
