It's a mind game...
The second full length album from
Eternity X is a varied and challenging affair. The American band had delivered a highly ambitious project in the form of their debut "Zodiac", a concept album revolving around the star signs. Mind Games is more accessible and easier digested. It is a small gem in the world of progressive music and if you haven't heard it yet, I can only urge you to hunt it down A.S.A.P.
A concept about life itself ties the songs together in a profound way. The lyrics deal with inner struggles in a way that is thoughtful and inspiring.
Of particular note is the title track,
Mind Games, a maze of a song. Keith Sudano sings with multiple personalities and successfully portrays confusion, turmoil and doubt. This one is up there with the best
Eternity X songs and is simply amazing.
Crawl before you walk is another incredible piece of music that evolves impressively through its 8 minutes. I love the way the chorus increases in intensity through the song, finally to burst open in a mass of small explosions near the end.
Euology ends the regular album with an emotional outburst that has become one of
my all time favorite songs. Keith's heartfelt delivery never fails to make an impression. The song brings a poignant closure to the concept.
The above three are my personal favorites of the album. The rest of the songs all have their moments of complexity (Endless Journey), aggression (Firestorm &
Viper II), melody (Faith) and beauty (Despair) but on their own none of them reach the genius level of the above three. However each has its place on the album and adds to its intricate web of emotion.
Mind Games comes very highly recommended. It is a unique and challenging album that shows many glimpses of the astounding potential
Eternity X has. The band had yet to reach the edge.
