Staff page - Anders
Anders is no longer part of the RevelationZ staff. As long as his articles are available on the site, this page will be here.
\m/ Hello metal fans! \m/
Let me introduce myself - my name is Anders Jacobsen (a.k.a. L'homme Obscure) and I was born in 1978. First of all let me make it clear that my taste in music is somewhat different than that of the other writers in this magazine. I listen to more extreme metal genres such as death and black metal, so I guess I could be called the black sheep of the staff. In the later years I have also learned to appreciate a lot power, progressive and true metal. As I will explain in the following, my music taste is very wide, and I listen to other kinds of music than metal as well :-0
My Musical Journey
My father was a huge Mike Oldfield fan, so the first metal-like music I ever heard was Mike Oldfield's Shadow on the Wall (from the Crises album). The music was like nothing I had ever heard before. The heavy guitar riffs and drums opened up a whole new world to me. Also Roger Chapman's voice was harder and rougher than the few other singers' I knew at that time. I must have been 7 or so, when I heard the song.
Some years went by and I mostly listened to main stream music, but then one day my sister bought The Black Album with Metallica. I really liked the music, and I borrowed the CD more and more often, until it finally ended up being permanently in my room (I still have it today, and I think my sister has forgotten all about it). I quickly found out that the older Metallica albums were way cooler, than The Black Album and I started listening to them too. Thereafter I discovered bands as Guns'n'Roses, Nirvana, Sepultura, Psyched Up Janis, Kashmir and Slayer.
Yet another couple of years later (we are now in 1995) I met a person who influenced my taste in music a lot. He had sort of an alternative personality, and he was a death/black-metal fan. At that time I had never heard of those two genres, but I quickly caught up with them. I think the time where I really turned to the dark side was after a Metal Marathon in Aalborg, Denmark. This was an eye opening experience, and I heard bands like Withering Surface, Dominus and Autumn Leaves for the first time. In these years I also discovered Immortal, Burzum, Cradle Of Filth, Illdisposed, Saturnus, Dimmu Borgir, Morbid Angel, Konkhra and Deicide.
Time passed by, and we started a Red Warszawa cover band called Human Combustion (with me playing guitar) - later we evolved to a black metal band and changed name to Arctic Frost. To be honest we weren't really any good, so the band didn't last very long. While I was discovering all this great new music I also opened my eyes for classical music - mostly classical guitar caught my interest. I discovered John Williams (no, not the Star Wars guy) - and especially his interpretation of Isaac Albeniz' Asturias caught my interest.
In 1999 I was introduced to the excellent Danish melodic rock band Baal and the legendary David Bowie by a guy who was a really huge fan of both those artists. They are still some of my big favorites today. I also discovered great bands like Kent, The The, Dave Matthews Band, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd and Radiohead.
One year later I met Steen, and I guess he has been influencing my music taste ever since. I found out there was something called power and progressive metal, and I must admit I didn't like it right away. But as time has passed on, I am starting to see what the big deal is! At one of Steen's numerous metal parties Mads convinced me that Blind Guardian was an excellent band - today it is actually one of my favorite bands. I am still a newbie in these genres, but I have really learned to love bands like Rhapsody, Nevermore, and Pain Of Salvation.
The last couple of years have been really exciting for me, and the job here at RevelationZ Magazine has helped broaden my musical taste even more. Recently I discovered In Flames, Vintersorg, Otyg, Opeth, Borknagar, Vader, Finntroll, Within Temptation, Children of Bodom and Arcturus.
So what do I hear today? Why don't you check out my favorite section
I know what you must be thinking by now - "this guy has the strangest music taste ever!" Well, I agree that it is a bit peculiar. What can I say - I didn't get my nick name L'homme Obscure for nothing. No, I have always tried to keep an open mind to new music, and I think that is very important. There is nothing worse than people too narrow minded to try something new - maybe I will review the new Celine Dion album some time.. not!
My Mission
So, what is my mission in RevelationZ Magazine? I am primarily here to review death and black music, but once in a while something else might sneak in. If you have made it all the way down here, I bet you are wondering what a death and black metal reviewer is doing at RevelationZ Magazine. I am simply here to contribute with something a little different, and to give some counterbalance to all the other reviews. Remember to keep an open mind, and enjoy the music!
