Salvo Records has made a fantastic looking package with "The Catch" and "Cinema" packed in one big 2-cd digipack. The label certainly gives
Nazareth fans value for money.
The odd thing about this release is that it packs one of my favorite
Nazareth albums with my least favorite
Nazareth album. "The Catch" was released in September 1984.
Nazareth sounded tired and a bit uninspired. Looking back they should have made an album going back to their roots because Heavy Metal was just about to explode and we all know that 3 years later a band called Guns N Roses broke and payed kudos to
Nazareth. "The Catch" has drum machines and electronic effects. The only song that really ignites is
This Months Messiah, which is found in a great live version as bonus for "Cinema".
In 1986 "Cinema" was released. The album is a milestone because it has a good bombastic production and well-written songs. For once
Nazareth got the timing right because the songs sounded like MTV hits. Especially a song like
Juliet would have gone down well at the time- in particular if the lads were 20 years young and put on some make-up
The title track is pompous and once again
Nazareth sounds inspired.
Just Another Heartache is a fun and easy song that certainly had hit potential.
A veterans Song is a great epic ballad that rounds off the album emotionally. "Cinema" was also a much anticipated return to the Hard Rock roots after a couple of radio/pop oriented records. Manny Charlton once again proved that
Nazareth's reputation was not build on McCafferty's voice alone.
"Cinema" succeeds because it's the perfect hybrid of 80's production and vintage
Nazareth with twist of keyboard which was typical for the era. "Cinema" is one of
Nazareth's best album "Cinema" and if that wasn't enough this reissue also spoils us with 7 bonus songs live from BBC.
"Cinema" has long been out of print so buy this package just because of it and consider "The Catch" a free bonus.
