Nazareth celebrates their 40 year anniversary - what an incredible achievement for the Scottish band! In the seventies the band released a string of albums, which today are regarded as rock classics namely "Razamanaz", "Loud N Proud" and "Hair of the Dog". The popularity declined and especially the 90's weren't kind to the band, where original member Darrel Sweet also passed away.
Since "No Jive" the quality of
Nazareth albums has been doubtful. "The Newz" is huge welcome back and rehabilitation for the proud Scottish band. Son of bassist Pete Agnew, Lee Agnew, has taken Darrel Sweet's place and guitarist Jimmy Murrison sure reignited the spark of this fine old band.
Liar and
Warning features some of the rawest guitar playing from Jimmy Murrison. The opening song
Goin Loco is a riff based rock song and it certainly has been a while since
Nazareth wrote such great riffs.
Day at the Beach bounces and ranks among the best songs.
Keep on Travellin' is boogie rock in the
AC/DC and George Thorogood vein.
The juicy production really suits
Nazareth. Jimmy Murrison's guitar is in center along with Dan McCafferty's trademark voice. The songwriting is inspired and the band sounds fresh - just listen to the acoustic
See Me. All these positive elements overshadow the few songs that don't quite work as they should.
"The Newz" is
Nazareth's first album in a decade and they certainly hold their head up high. I look forward to their show in support of this album at Sweden Rock festival 2010.
