This is the fifth full length album from the German black metal band
Mystic Circle. Damien is a concept album based on "The Omen" movie trilogy - the album is split up in three chapters each representing a movie. Being a Satanic band
Mystic Circle naturally takes side with the satanic spawn Damien.
Mystic Circle sounds a lot like the Norwegian black metal band Dimmu Borgir, and it is not hard to hear that they have been inspired by the Scandinavian black metal sound.
The sound on Damien is very good, and the production seems very professional. All three members of the band are very talented, and the music is fast, hard and extreme - everything you could ask for in black metal. Still the album is missing something - I can't quite put my finger on what it is. It just needs that little extra to fully climb the rating scale.
The tracks are much alike, with exception of the three intros
Chapter I - The Revelation,
Chapter II - The Omen and
Chapter III - The Deduction. This is not necessarily a bad thing; it just means that you think of the album as a whole instead of looking at the different songs. Still there are some tracks that distinguish themselves, I will take a look at them here.
666 (Mark Of The Devil) is the best track on the album in my opinion. It is a fast and powerful song with some nice guitar riffs and a good chorus - there is also a good variation in the vocals. Another good song is
Servants Of Twilight - here there are some really catchy guitar riffs, fast drums and the vocals are very demonic at times. The last song I would like to mention is
Armageddon War - it is a very obscure and extreme song; the music reflects the title of the song well.
This is a great black metal album, even though it is no classic. Still I would recommend that you go out and buy this album - especially if you like bands as Dimmu Borgir. I rate this album 7/10 because it is very good, but not original in any way.
