Virgin Steele - Age Of Consent
Age Of Consent is with no doubt one of the most atmospheric and thrilling releases in my collection. Anyone who knows me also knows that Virgin Steele is my all time favourite band and that every release by the band is considered something really special. But that should not keep me from making a fair review, as always ha ha.

The opener The Burning Of Rome is a true masterpiece and one of the best songs in Metal history, great symphonic arrangements, fantastic emotion filled lyrics, great powerful guitar riffs and lot of passion. These elements go throughout the album as a thin red line, and the musicians perform with great ability. The guitar solo/keyboard midsection comes out extremely melodic and shows just how good musicians the band consists of, a true epic.

The fast and powerful Let It Roar features a highly interesting outro, suddenly as you think the song is over, a calm acoustic rhythm guitar guides the song to rest. A typical Virgin Steele moment, that adds to the feeling that each song has more to offer than its basic layer.

Lion In Winter is classic Virgin Steele song, a powerful riff and a fantastic underlying atmosphere works in great harmony. The extensive solo is also a great aspect; Edward plays some of his best stuff on this release.
The song is nicely surrounded by a short piano/keyboard intro and outro. These short tracks works fantastic with the main song, the arrangements by David are extraordinary, the way he combines an atmospheric keyboard and the melody making piano is a Virgin Steele trademark, I get into a very relaxed mood when I hear these genius short creations.

The chorus driven, up-tempo song On The Wings Of The Night, shows a more direct side of the band. The song is clearly one of my favourites. The chorus is very catchy and the overall feeling of romantic emotions and young boundless energy is just great. The emotions this man lays into the vocals and the special feeling of the lyrics, combined with his fantastic technical skills, makes him the greatest singer of all time in my book.

Chains Of Fire also has a more simple form than some of the more epic songs; this nice mix of styles blends nicely together. The bass really grooves at high speed on this one. The short track hasn't the great complex passages or changing sections that otherwise are central in so many of the songs, a very good song anyway though, packed with energy.

Cry Forever is one of the greatest and most passionate ballads that I have ever heard. The totally fantastic and huge chorus is sung in a way that creates just the right mood. The song gives me a very special feeling and lyrics and music melts to one in a perfect connection.
Words cannot describe just how great a song this is; it must be heard and felt.

The extremely atmospheric We Are Eternal ends the record in majestic fashion. I very much like the drums in this song, when carefully listening there are some great detailed parts to discover.
The hymn-like chorus is central to the song and works nicely with the calm mood. There exists an epic glow in this song, and at the end of the record I'm left with a relaxed and clam feeling of delight.

Lyrically the themes are much about love, strong passionate emotions and problems, spirituality and human strength. They are nicely composed and brings the songs just the right ingredient.

The sound is, with the time of recording taking into account, very good. All instruments are fitted nicely into a powerful and special-sounding whole. The bass could have been turned up a bit though.

The album contains all the elements I would like to find on a Heavy Metal CD played with tons of energy and passion. Symphonic keyboards and piano parts, fantastic guitar solos, pumping bass parts and varied drums.

The only critique I seem to can come up with is that some songs aren't as genius as others, there a couple of choruses that appears a bit on the simple side (Let It Roar, Chains Of Fire), but they still work fine considered the style of the song they appear in. When you have to come up with such thin critical remarks, I guess I simply just have to conclude that this rightfully is a work of special skill and great musical composition.

The re-release of the record features 3 other great Virgin Steele tracks (Perfect Mansions rules with its hymn-like atmosphere) and a cover song. The rating is based on the original songs, but the extra tracks just seem to add to the overall high quality of this fantastic release.

There is nothing but good things to say about the overall standard of this release, it contains some pure classics and a unique surrounding mood.

Burning of Rome is one of the best metal pieces in 80's history.Other than that the album is fairly good but way inferior to the best VS moments

This album has the best production by far.

The album has a great start on the Burning of Rome. Powerful, and very "Steely" track. However the album's main problem, varying quality kicks in with the following track. Let it roar is by no means awful, but just doesn't reach the standard set by the opener.

Lion in Winter is another peak as is the bonus track Perfect Mansions. I also like Serpent's Kiss a lot but looking at the album as a whole picture, it somehow doesn't fit in. A good track still.

The second half of the album is more dominated by the lower end cuts this including the bonus material. A couple of tracks could have easily been chopped off.

Still, an album with a couple of timeless tracks. Worth buying for any VS fan. 7/10.

Age of consent...I was once told that if I like Manowar then I should listen to Virgin Steele because they are similar. Then I heard Cry Forever, Vini Vidi Vici and Child of Desolation and was totally amazed. However, as a huge Manowar fan I can say that I don't think that they are similar...Virgin Steele is more about feelings and there is a special touch into the music - I just can't put my finger on it. Well I bought Age of Consent because of Cry forever (I LOVE this ballad) and Invictus because of Vini Vidi Vici... I really liked it at that time but I couldn't find any VS albums and my searching on the internet wasn't a huge success. However, a couple months ago I decided to continue my exploring and I have been listening to Invictus and Age of Consent regularly since and now I'm totally hooked on this band. The fact that these guys really don't give a damn when it comes to PR - makes me even like them more... when I sometimes think of Manowar, I get a bit sad because of the endless stream of Fan-stuff... it's too much .. Sorry Manowar, but that is the truth - and the endless stream of weird e-mails is just annoying... 5 e-mails from Magic Circle every other day is way too much.

The Burning of Rome is very melodic and very epic - especially with the sound of the sword in the beginning. It's a song that sticks to your brain right away, love the lyric. The riffs are easy and very cool - it made me want to play this song.

Roar is very speedy, and the ROAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRR is soo cool - like a lion :) . The Chorus is very memorable and love the way he sings it in. and the keys at the ending ...is just perfect...a magical touch.

The drums in the beginning of Lion in the winter followed by a far out from this world scream is incredible. Again a very catchy and breezy chorus and I love the galloping tempo; this gets me in a very good mood. I actually would like the drums to be turned up...just a bit...that would be perfect.

Stranger At The Gate is defiantly something I could listen to like for the rest of my life - once again I have found myself pushing repeat many times. I simply adore this instrumental, if David recorded albums with his piano-playing I would seriously buy them all. He is so talented, he really knows what goes together and the timing is perfect. Okay, I love it :) he is so passionate; he plays with his heart...so damn passionate. The beginning is like rain falling down slowly... I can just picture it in my mind. Beautiful, what a great composer.

I love the start of Perfect Mansions with the vocals and rain and thunder, and then: "The day is over", so clear and full of soul. The chorus is lovely and so high pitched ...no matter how bad I sing I can't help singing along - damn what a high pitched voice he has...and then the guitar solo is so tight and fits so perfectly in. One day, I listened to this one when I went to the beach on a very cloudy evening and the sun was just setting in the horizon that was beautiful. The settings just brought the song into another dimension...what an experience.

From the first time I listened to Coils of The Serpent I liked it and it's quite funny and it made me laugh :)
Serpent's Kiss has some very heavy riffs and then halfway through it explodes - DUBLE BASS DRUMMING badass :D and then the ultra fast, super awesome guitar solo - and then in the ending it slows down into the same heaviness as in the beginning - and the song finally ends with a cool piano outtro - soo cool composition, I'm amazed.

I feel great when I listen to Seventeen, so young and breezy, well I get the feeling that I just can't my hands down... like I have been to a fantastic gig and still can't focus on anything else. It's so playful and funny with the guitar and vocal battle at the end ...I love when bands do that ;)
The depressing song: Tragedy just right after seventeen forces me to take down my hands. One thing that always amazes me about music is its ability to make our humor switch in few seconds.

This album has so much to offer, although I agree that some of the songs are a bit too simple and easy delivered, but still it's a genius album.
