"Anomaly" has been long underway and finally Space Ace can deliver a product to the fans. The last we heard from
Ace Frehley was the brilliant "Trouble Walkin", which dates back to 1989 plus the weak
Kiss reunion album "Psycho Circus" from 1998.
"Anomaly" does his name justice and I am sure that it would please most fans. The weakness has always been Frehleys singing, but we already knew that and weren't expecting Ace to turn into Chris Cornell overnight.
The easy way to please the fans was to make a copy of his 1978 self titled solo album. However, Ace has some aces in his sleeve for "Anomaly".
Foxy and Free,
Outer Space,
Pain in the Neck (great solo) and
Too Many Faces are great songs centered around his Gibson Les Paul. Most songs have a 70's feel to it, but yet with a contemporary feel as well.
After Frehley's battle with alcohol you gotta give him thumbs up for making this album in the autumn of his career. The lyrics are pretty simple. I expected the lyrics to be more self-centered around
Ace Frehley's problems but only
A Little Below the Angels is about the alcohol.
The first week
Ace Frehley scanned a sale of 17.000 in US alone so "Anomaly" is already a success. "Anomaly" is a must have for all
Ace Frehley fans and certainly worth checking out for
Kiss fans. If you are not familiar with
Ace Frehley's solo work this is not the worst place to start.
If this was a John Doe guitarist this album would have been mediocre - just listen to the toothless cover of
Fox on the Run.., but c'mon it is ACE FREHLEY. After all he's been through "Anomaly" is a great way to bounce back. RESPECT!
