Lenny
Wolf's rock band brand name, Kingdom Come, is alive and extremely well, thank you.
Over twenty years and 12 albums
Wolf has developed into an astute, skilful producer.
Ally to this his flair for writing an hypnotic tune, underscored by the occasional monster riff, and the result for hard rock fans is never less than satisfying.
Kingdom Come's 12
th studio album,
'Magnified' is
Wolf in his post industrial phase, resurrecting those huge riffs from his early, seventies' Brit rock period, then mixing and matching these with alternatively short, sweet, orchestrated passages and dark, gritty axework, lacing the beats with haunting effects.
It's never cacophonous nor formulaic, but it's frequently bittersweet, with the gamut of human emotions always realised precisely and powerfully. Throughout,
Wolf's battle hardened tunes, slender yet tough, wind and weave their way gracefully through his velvet lined, ironclad production.
The modern melodic rock of '
24 Hours' is probably the pick of the bunch.
It's a grandiose, medium paced rock song, propelled by a pulsing, industrial beat, full of melancholy harmonies and synth strings, climaxed by a sinuous hook that just doesn't let go.
It's closely followed by '
Living Dynamite'. A clanging, dark edged, sinister number of cinematic proportions. And not too far behind comes the balladic, melodious yet steely spined '
Unwritten Language', a poignant and heartfelt "music is the food of love" anthem.
'
Over You' illuminates proceedings in a rare moment of mood lightening. And elsewhere, the immense, quasi industrial electronic rock of
'Sweet Killings' strays away from the album's dominant style for a few pulse quickening minutes, challenging
'24 Hours' for the position as standout track.
Impressive stuff from
Wolf. Up there with his
'Twilight Cruiser' and '
Master Seven' albums.
