Doro - Fear No Evil
Aside from the hopeless opening narration, the way too familiar "Manowar - Warriors of the world"-feel that pervades Running from the Devil and the terribly bad production on Caught in a Battle Doro's latest album is pure joy. After 25 years in Heavy Metal, Doro is back with another lesson in how it's done.

It took five listens before the album started making a positive impression but from then on it has been growing into a rock solid and often excellent record. The production is suitably big with the drums having a deep pounding sound while the guitar riffs have an effective crunch to them. Everything is tight and well played.

Fear no Evil may be unorignal and clichéd but that's part of its charm. The album has heart and shows a deepfelt enjoyment of the genre which is transferred to the listener or more precisely, pounded into the listeners head. I get a craving to party, sing along and drink an obscene amount of beer when I listen to the album. After a few listens I found something compelling about the simplicity of Celebrate. What I had first written off as almost embarrassing grew into a favorite and I'm sure Celebrate will become a party anthem for many years to come.

Doro sings straight from the heart and her voice is still convincingly raw and rusty with a brush of emotion. I'm impressed by how well it holds up. My favorite parts of the album are the powerful ones like On the Run where her strong voice rises above the effective rhythm section and adds to the song's strong drive. Long lost for love and I lay my head upon my sword are other highlights and both have memorable choruses.

But also the slower moments hold a power of their own. Herzblut (sung in German), Walking with the Angels where Doro successfully duets with Tarja Turunen and the immense album closer 25 Years all have their emotional moments and are successful ballads. 25 Years in particular is a big highlight and along with I Lay my head upon my sword points towards the fact that this might be the last Doro album. Hopefully I'm mistaken.

Fear No Evil is simply a must for Doro fans.

You can´t help to love Doro and her accent.

Not as good as she was in Warlock and the first solo albums but still going strong.

Could´nt she just be 15 years younger ;0)

I am a big fan of Doro Pesch though I generally prefer her early work with Warlock a little more. Her solo career has been spotty (some great, some a little on the boring side). This continues her recent streak of putting out really good hard rocking albums. This one has some great songs though it is not quite up to par with her brilliant Warrior Soul album.
