Say 80's Glam Rock?
Pretty Boy Floyd is one of the first bands that comes to mind with haystack hair and layers of make-up. Just checkout the artwork, which will scare off most people - however, if this was an album released in 1989 it would have sold like fresh bread.
"Dirty Glam" is NOT a new
Pretty Boy Floyd album, but one of the countless compilations that has been made even though this band only released one full length CD in 1989 and a new album in 2004. "Dirty Glam" is the same album earlier released as "Porn Stars" in 1999, but with the addition of original untouched demos featuring the original 1987 line up, which comprised of vocalist Steve Summers, guitarist Aeriel Stiles, bassist Vinnie Chas and drummer Kari Kane.
Track 1-13 is the "Porn Star" album, which for most part was re-recordings of "Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz" tunes. In general the remakes are livelier and especially
Rock N Roll Outlaws sounds better because of the dynamic work from guitarists
Kristy Majors and Kerri Kelli. Songs that works better in their original form is
I wanna be with You and
Your Momma Won't Know.
Good Girl Gone Bad and
Restless are new material that adds value to the
Pretty Boy Floyd catalogue. Guitarist Aeriel Stiles is responsible for writing most of the material even though he was already out of the band when the debut album was released. Later on Stiles' songs has been used by
Shameless and
Shy Diane and
Summer Luv proves Stiles's ability to write great rock ballads.
Shout it out loud is an okay
Kiss cover, while Alice Cooper's
Department of Youth doesn't work at all.
The sound quality of the original demos is pretty good for that era.
Shut Up was also featured on both
"Live at the Pretty Ugly Club" and "The Vault" and it is a catchy rock tune, which sounds a bit rawer.
Hands off my Radio is a typical "cruise down the street with the windows rolled down" song that takes one back to the sunset strip in the late eighties.
So "Dirty Glam" is yet another collection of re-recordings, a couple of covers and demos. Since all songs have been released before the untouched demos are the only value added material for
Pretty Boy Floyd fans. However, every Glam fan that doesn't own any
Pretty Boy Floyd CD's or maybe only "Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz" definitely get something from this album with 19 tracks and a great 6 page booklet with the history of
Pretty Boy Floyd.
"Dirty Glam" is released on Mausoleum Records, whose catalogue finally is available in Scandinavia via Music Company Nordic.
