Sweden's
Gemini Five have a lot going for them. They have the right look, attitude, a great lead singer and they are great songwriters. On their debut album "Babylon Rockets" they earned themselves a well earned following among Glam Rockers. "Babylon Rockets" was one of the best debut albums in ages with great melodic songs played in respect to the 21st century.
Gemini Five have taken this further on "Black Anthem" Unfortunately for the worse, since the band now integrate sound effects in all songs. The debut was catchy and irresistible, while "Black Anthem" is a very dark and cold sounding record. The title track is almost gothic with a drenched piano.
Gemini Five totally loose it on
Love Venus and
Sinners Parade
Someone once said that Glam Rock was all about having fun, dress like women, talk like men and act like motherfuckers.
Gemini Five got the make up thing going and while I got no knowledge about their behavior
Gemini Five certainly have taken the fun away from the music. Maybe that's why
Gemini Five has made their own category for their music as 21st century Nu sleaze. Please mark the "Nu "as in Nu metal.
The only song that really falls into the same party rocking category as "Babylon Rockets" is the hook filled
When the Body Speaks. Also the ballad
Heaven Come Undone has a great melodic chorus.
Gemini Five had some strong ballads on their debut and
Heaven Come Undone almost reaches the same heights.
Second II None is another kick ass tune that you only expect from a class act like
Gemini Five.
The industrial sound has scourged the album with a cold and not very forthcoming vibe.
Gemini Five has lost most of their melodic appeal. The exaggerated use of effects hampers the great vocalist Tin Star. His vocals sound so much better without effects.
The album is dark and heavy - but it's at the expense of catchy. DAMN! I really love this band but cannot approve the depressing industrial direction they have chosen to follow
When the Body Speaks is a killer tune and
Second II None,
Heaven Come Undone and
Flesh for Fantasy are good tunes as well and those tunes save
Gemini Five from making a catastrophic record.
