Vicious Rumors - Welcome to the ball
Going through my cd collection to find this month's classic I came upon this long lost gem and it brought back a lot of great memories. The very overlooked Vicious Rumors first reared their head back in 1985 with their fantastic debut Soldiers of the night. They continued to put out classic albums through the 80'ies and start of the 90'ies. Unfortunately (and maybe unfairly) I lost track of them after Word of mouth was released in 1994. Around the same time Vicious Rumors suffered a tragic loss when their singer Carl Albert passed away in 1995 But the band has kept on releasing albums and seeing the new lineup live on their tour with Savatage back in 2002 was a great experience that gave me hope for the future of the band.

Ok, enough history. This is about Welcome to the ball, the last album on the Atlantic label, released back in 1991 and my favorite VR album. This is a solid ball of Metal that hits you hard and fast with the crunching power chords of Abandoned and leaves you gasping for breath when Ends of the world is over 45 minutes later. The songs on Welcome to the ball are varied, straight to the point and never boring. Complementing the fast songs are two slower, but equally powerful ballads. If you have never heard of Vicious Rumors before and like Power Metal and Painkiller-era Judas Priest then I am sure you will be blown away by their music.

Carl Albert was an amazing singer. His soaring voice matches the powerful music and is able to command it with a great sense of melody. Take an extremely tight song like You only live twice, where his vocals are spot on, or the line "Lay down the tracks upon the shore" from Dust to Dust, which is one of many times where his voice captures a fantastic melody. His voice has a great tension and there is always a feel that he can explode at any time. If you spliced the power of Rob Halford with the emotion of Jon Oliva and added some secret ingredient, then Carl Albert is close to what you would get. A powerful and one of a kind singer.

On drums Larry Howe keep things tight with an amazing precision and he brings a lot of great detail to the album. Likewise on the bass, Dave Starr plays an important role in several songs. Guitar wise the work of Geoff Thorpe and Mark McGee is splendid. A great abundance of cool riffs and fast solos are sprayed all over the album. But the best thing about Vicious Rumors is the perfect way the instruments work together to create something very heavy and powerful.

The album is varied and doesn't have a weak song, just pure Metal. Each song has something to offer and songs like Raise your hands with its drive and rythm that just sweeps you away, Mastermind with its psycho chorus and overall cool feel and the aggressive Savior from anger are songs that provide a solid base for the album. That also goes for Dust to dust, which has some very cool riffs.

My absolute highlights are You only live twice, Six step sisters and the two ballads.

You only live twice is not a Bond movie cover song. The song is ruled by an incredible heavy and powerful riff and fast power drumming. It is one of those songs that will cut through your speakers and eat you alive if you play it loud enough. Carl is in top form and in the spirit of the main riff sings in a very tight and controlled voice. The same can be said of the guitar solo. A fast and melodic song driven by pure energy.

Children is the definition of a Power Ballad. Even my sister sang along to this song once upon a time. I love the start of the song with its monstrous and heavy dual guitar riff. Pretty simple and very effective. Carl's voice delivers the message with just the right amount of feeling, never sounding contrived. Children is one of those songs that has a timeless message.

Six stepsisters is another favorite for obvious reasons... Just listen to the song and you will understand, hehee. Well, twisted would be one way to describe the song and lyrics. Right from the insane start the intensity level is raised to boiling point and through the song it is kept intact due to the frantic background riffing, kick ass drumming and Carl's voice, which is filled with held back emotion. If the extremely cool chorus doesn't get you then I'm sure the ear raising middle part will. What a cool song.

When love comes down is a wonderful ballad. The bass lays a very soothing background to Carl's voice and the guitar is used to enhance the song just right. A perfect hearfelt guitar solo leads to the final part of the song which doesn't just fade out but ends on an emotional note.

The production is just like it should be, full and powerful with room for every instrument.

The lyrics takes on a lot of differerent subjects ranging from world pollution through government control to finding your inner strength, friendship, love and never giving up. One thing that has certainly defined this band.

Welcome to the ball is an essential release from a band that has been far too overlooked. A timeless classic that should have a good home in every Metal collection.

I am totally agree with your review, Vicious Rumors is one of my favourites of all time. I am glad to read that someone thinks exactly like me, this band comes from Judas Priest of course, but be sure that inspiration for Painkiller was taken from bands like this.
Only 2 points, Soldiers Of The Night was released in 1985 and this Welcome To The Ball is from 1991.
Anyway great review, itīs great toknow that someone cares about the 80īs underground.

When I've heard the voice of a singer, I was pretty amazed. He's better than Bruce Dickinson. What a big loss for music is Carl Albert's sudden death in 1995. It's one of the best heavy albums in the history and HE is the best heavy metal singer because of emotions.

You only live twice...so it's better for you to know Vicious Rumors! Great Musicians, Great Artists. Power+Control=Good H.M.

Could not agree w/ you more. VR was, and still are, one of the most under-the-radar bands I've ever heard. Another band that comes to mind is Nevermore. Bands like these I think have too much substance for commercial success. Carl Albert (RIP) was one of the all-time best vocalists! And Mark McGhee and Geoff Thorpe are up there with any guitarist duo. Hands down.

"Welcome to the Ball" as well as the Vicious Rumors self-titled album (the one with Don't Wait For Me), are two of my most influencial albums of all time. In fact, me and Jay (our singer) were jamming last night to "Dust to Dust". We were even talking about doing a cover for an EP as a tribute to the late Carl Albert.

I can never say enough about C.A. He had incredible range, control, and lots of attitude in his voice. I met him once in late '92 and he was really cool as well.

I concur. VR is the ultimate expression of what a true power metal band should sound like. Nothing superficial or forced, just full speed ahead with chaotic appeal. Awesome musicianship mathced with awesome songs...what more could one ask for?

Antonio i will disagree with you about VR coming from JP. This band had a style all their own which made them unique. As this band progressed their albums got tighter and more polished. But when tragedy struck with Carl's passing they went downhill IMO. But Sadistic Symphony was better than Cyberchrist.

Welcome to the Ball should have been the album that continued to push VR on the world but those idiots at Atlantic never did much in the way of promoting them which sucked. But of the 2 Atlantic releases this is probably the best one. Hell their isn't a bad song on this cd they all kick butt and don't bother taking names they just move on and continue to do the same.

I totally agree with the comments above. The production on this album is excellent, the band sounds like their playing at their absolute peak. The perfect follow up to their first Atlantic release, which while also an excellent album, doesn't have the energy that 'Welcome to the Ball' has. The only negative thing I have to say about WTTB is that I thought the metal-ballad 'When Love Comes Down' was fairly weak. If a slow song was a must, then I'd rather it be done with original lyrics, instead of the typical 'girl I miss you, wait for me'song that every 80-90's era band released hoping for a radio friendly hit. The song sounds forced to me, as if the band felt they had to write this sappy number. Unlike the heartfelt song 'Children' which contains a great opening riff, and gives the impression that the whole band really were into the song, and the subject matter. I mean c'mon, can't you just feel drummer Larry Howe yawning during the middle of 'When Love Comes Down'? The rest of the album is classic VR though. The opening track hits you square in the chest, and is perfect for the drive home after a long sh*tty day at work. 'You Only Live Twice' is such a well crafted song, and couldn't have been played any tighter. The harmonies are spot on with Carl's lead melody line, and while the song rips right along, one gets the feeling like the band is at such a pinnacle in their playing abilities that they could do it with their eyes closed, and a smile on their faces. That cool vibe transfers right out of the studio they originally recorded it in, through to your speakers for a killer rush of metal, in the way that most metal bands never even come close to accomplishing.

Long live VR!

Damn I almost forgot about this band. I donīt own Welcome to the ball but i do have the Selftitled album from 1990 and Digital Dictator from 87.

I think i have do dig out those two old albums, I canīt remember at all what this band sounds like it has been more than 15 years since my last listen!!!

What i do remember is that every single review i ever read about Welcome to the ball and the selftitled album from 1990 praised the band to the skies. It was as if the band never got the recognition they deserved like other classic acts as Savatage and Overkill.

And everyone praised Carl Alberts voice like the best singer of all time so there must be something about it.

Going to give VC a spin in a minute ;0)
