In the later years
Every Mother's Nightmare (EMN) has become one of my favorite bands because they still make records that have something to offer the listener. EMN keep the banner flying with their mixture of tough southern rock with massive grooves.
On their later records EMN has become a bit mellower but still has kept the sparkle and groove.
It takes some time to fully appreciate this record. After the first handful of listens I didn't find the key to unlock this great album and rated it mediocre. But after this CD has been in heavy rotation I can announce; oh boy, it rocks.
Done to me opens the album with a high energy level. Like stated in my earlier EMN reviews you gotta get used to Rick Ruhl's voice - it grows on you and is such a big part of the band that it takes some tolerance to fully appreciate this great band.
Until I Break follows the kick ass opening vibe.
The core competence of EMN's music is that the guitars always create great emotions and atmosphere. The title track is a perfect example of that.
Deeper Shade of Grey is definitely among the best tracks with its irresistible tough mid-tempo groove and melodic chorus
Vibe is the key word because EMN makes it groove like no other. Another album highlight exemplifies that -
See Through U displays the solid guitar work of Jeff Caughron and Travis Hall. Ruhl sings his heart out on the amazing chorus - hell, everything comes together on this gem.
Carbon is a soaring ballad permeated by a characteristic riff that is the leitmotif of the song. Ruhl's heartfelt lyrics understates that he puts his heart and soul in this.
Carbon is another of my favorites with a solo that is the tip of the iceberg - yummy!
Takes Your Breath Away is mid-tempo rocker driven by tough guitars.
Hello Darkness starts as a sad and lifeless ballad - however, the songs changes pace into a power ballad with a strong chorus. Check out the amazing ending of the song - another example of the amazing groove provided by the formidable duo Jeff Caughron and Travis Hall.
Fly Away and
Solid Ground a both songs that define the word rock, while
Paradise is a standard track.
EMN are masters of mid-tempo tunes -
Blind to See is another gem. The riff is irresistible and creates a certain emotion to the verse before everything explodes in the powerful chorus.
It took some time to get this record under my skin. Overall it is well played Rock with a tough southern feel - or put in other words:
THIS is rock done right.
