Every Mother's Nightmare is one of those bands that I have kept hearing and reading about, but actually never listened to. As a self-proclaimed Hard Rock fan I am ashamed that this is my EMN debut. However, the band has taken me by a pleasant surprise with their unpretentious cocktail of Heavy Rock southern style.
The band sounds really good on this live recording. Like the title indicates this album contains songs from various performances. The songs included span from their buzz making debut album from 1990 to EMN latest release "Deeper Shade of Grey" from 2002. Overall the band sounds the same on all tracks, so it is displaying a consistent band. Worth highlighting is the great guitar sound. The album is well mixed with only a few "up/down" fading between the various shows.
Love can make you Blind is a great ballad, which was a minor hit for the band. Rick Ruhl has a special voice and his singing style is unique. He is holding the tone just fine on the chorus of this great ballad.
We get 3 tracks in a row from the album "Smokin' Delta Voodoo". All 3 songs are really good making me putting this album on my want list.
Pray starts out with a melodic guitar part, which overlaps into an up-tempo part making this song kicking my ass.
Sympathy is a great mid-tempo rocker with some additional wah-wah playing from guitarist Jeff Caughron.
Favorites include the brilliant title track form their latest album "Deeper Shade of Grey". A very atmospheric guitar is creating a great emotion to the song.
Solid Ground is another fine tune from the album, which is uplifted by a great chorus. The riff to
Takes Your Breath Away is simply irresistible. The riff is spiced with some artificial harmonics sounding real appealing and melodic.
The groovy
Hole is an unreleased track. It follows the EMN tradition with a great chorus and a great riff, which drives the song. The band is showcasing another brand new tune on this album called
Bring Me Down. The song is the absolute highlight of this disc. The song has a great chorus, which goes up-tempo with some groovy guitar work. This sounds very promising for the next studio release.
Furthermore there is great covers of Alice Cooper's classic
I'm Eighteen and an explosive cover of Lynard Skynard's
Saturday Night Special.
Rick Ruhl's voice fits the music style perfect. I admire and respect Rick Ruhl for sticking to his guns and keeping EMN rolling. The music is honest and Rick Ruhl's heart is obvious beating for this Southern Hard Rock style. EMN puts lots of energy in the music making you wish that you were at the actual show. The whole album is full of in your face Rock N' roll.
After this great release I am jumping on the EMN wagon and especially after hearing
Bring Me Down I look forward to the next release from Every Mother's Nightmare.
