The Duskfall - Frailty
After downloading the samples at new comer Swedish Melodic Death Metal act The Duskfall's homepage, I immediately became very excited and ordered their first album, "Frailty." Based on what I had heard, these guys packed their music chock full of awesome leads, solos, and of course killer riffs. What I didn't realize is that I was just listening to samples from their newest album "The Source" (which came out in 2003)

So after I realized I had made a mix up in my order, I went back and ordered "The Source" right away. However, here I was with their debut album in my possession, so I was still very excited. Honestly, I found myself a little disappointed with "Frailty." It doesn't really have that much to offer in the way of good and varied riffs (that same Iron Maiden chord progression get pretty worn out in this album). In addition, I found that the great hooks and solos that I was so greatly anticipating were pretty scarce. This is not to say that there aren't some good ones here and there, but compared to "The Source", I really have to say that "Frailty" has nothing on it.

This album still has many strengths that are worthy of praise. Even though the riffing isn't anything terribly special, it is still delivered in an emotional and passionate way, which makes the record pleasant to listen to. It actually stayed in my cd player for many weeks (until "The Source" arrived of course). One cannot help but head bang and thrash around when listening to this. It has a lot of energy and is still very good for a debut album. The production could be a bit better though, but overall it doesn't really affect it that much.

My Favorite songs on the album are "None" and "Just Follow". Both of these have some good riffs in them and have that special emotional feeling that I spoke of. There are also some nice solos and leads that fit perfectly with the riffs, and compliment the songs quite nicely.

Basically, if you want to buy one album from these guys, get the new one, otherwise buy both. This one is for die-hard Melodic Death Fans only (such as myself).
