"Source" is
The Duskfall's second album, a blistering and impressive follow up to their 2002 debut 'Frailty." Not only is the production better, but it's tighter, thrashier, and has more of an abundance of awesome solos, riffs, and better songs. This being the vast and noticeable improvement from their previous effort that I was hoping for, this album is more than enough proof that they are ready to make a stand for the next generation of Swedish Melodic Death Metal.
Seeing as how the certain other bands from Sweden that pioneered the genre have been pooping out lately, I find myself appreciating bands like
The Duskfall even more. These guys, in addition to
Disarmonia Mundi and Nightrage, are the true heroes, and kind of like the last men standing the way I see it.
I don't think there is anything terribly original about
The Duskfall or their music, but what I want to convey in this review is that they do the Swedish thing well, and with a lot of energy and gusto. The songs are all well written, well structured, so I don't really feel as though I have anything to complain about besides the lack of originality.
"Source" is jam packed with killer riffs and melodies, so if that is any sort of selling point, then I can't stress that enough. I found that this album is best listened to in the car, at an incredibly high volume. It's perfect for the almighty headbang, that's for sure.
To me, the most amazing thing about this entire album is the guitar solo on the title track. It will forever go down in history as one of my favorite solos ever. It fills my ears with metallic bliss with every listen, and I even played it for my family so they could hear what a guitar solo should sound like. With each album,
The Duskfall get better and better, so guys, if you are reading this, keep 'em coming. You've got a fan right here.
