Mighty gods of Cosmic Chaos! Why did you only send me a one track preview of the new Rhapsody mini album???
Oh well, this is some kind of pre-taster of the mini album 'The dark secret' which will be released on June 28. Probably due to fear of piracy this pre-taster includes only a 4:28 minute edited version of Unholy warcry. While this is sad and not even in the vincinity of being satisfying it has certainly wetted my appetite for the new album, so I decided to give you my impression of this one song and give a first impression of the "new" Rhapsody and their self-labelled style Film Score Metal!!!
Okay, so suppressed laughter and the unbelieveably silly cover aside, Rhapsody's The dark secret and the forthcoming full length album are still at the top of my 'High expectations list' of 2004 after hearing Unholy warcry. It is in short an awesome display of Symphonic Metal that stirs the blood.
The deep voice of Christopher Lee soon transfers you to an alternate Lord of the Rings universe and when the band sets in there is no doubt that Rhapdosy is back. Big time. This time everything sounds bigger in every aspect and there is no sign that Rhapsody have slowed down. The production is huge and it sounds like they have taken their music one step further with a full blown orchestra and layer upon layer of melodies. The orchestra really adds a majestic touch. Unholy warcry is an aggressive and dramatic song that covers a lot of ground in just above 4 minutes. While a few melodies remind me of earlier works it shows the great possibilities I hope the band has captured the new album. Only the full album will tell if Rhapsody will stay in the heavens of Symphonic Metal or take a free fall into the hell of imitation and boiling cheese.
Yesterday I discovered this song online at Metal Express.no's
jukebox. So if you can't wait for The Dark Secret to arrive then you can get a taste of it there. But be aware that this song should be listened to at maximum volume
and in the maximum quality, ie. the CD version. Only then will you be able to enjoy the production value fully.
