The first indication that this record rocks is the incredible album cover art they chose this time! Of course Mattias Noren is known for his awesome album artwork the world over. This is one of my favorites so far.
Then the actual music plays and burns from the technical beginning to the triumphant end. Progressive and technical, but chock full of melody, this album will garner it's following of musicians for sure. Breed an
Opeth with a
Dream Theater, throw in some "Human" era Death, toss in some old
Styx and Chicago(the band) style vocals and you can get a taste of imagining what this sounds like.
This new album is leaps and bounds ahead of their previous efforts. Thanks in part to the addition of clean/death singer Chris Krall and new guitarist Rob Doherty. The former vocal duties where handled solely by main writer and guitarist Tim Roth and he still sings on this one but Chris is the focal point of the vocals and that is what sets this totally apart from the other albums.
I'm serious, if you ever wanted to hear
Opeth like death with progressive metal
Dream Theater at the same time in your stereo then pick this up! It's freaking incredible!
The former album "Dead Or Dreaming" was good but there was a lot of searching for completion happening on it. Well this is the magical lineup that will hopefully stand the test of time.
A little background for you: They hail from Regina, Saskatchewan in Canada.
The band now consists of 5 blazing musicians:
You have Chris Krall on Lead/Death vocals, Scott Krall on Bass, Jim Austin on Drums, Tim Roth on Lead/Death vocals and Guitar, and finally rob Doherty on Guitar.
The album consists of 10 songs and only two run over 5 minutes in length. Thank God! They burn right from the start and the brevity of the disc let's you listen but never get burned out from an overly long track listing and overly long songs. The old
Slayer "Reign In Blood" idea of album length. Personally i hope more bands will follow that time scheme when putting out records! Anyway this disc times in at a perfect 43:00 minutes.
The choruses are catchy and the heavy death vocals bring out the extremity at the right times. The production is clear, concise, yet really warm as though it was an analog recording. I don't know how it was recorded but it is well done so no worries there.
The music is melodic but extreme, technical but grooving too, and virtuous but not at the expense of the songs.
Well worth the price and time to pick up. Will most likely be a favorite for 2004 top list! Check out
