The newest single from this great Swedish Power Metal act offers four songs. An edited version of
Children Of The Night, two unreleased tracks from the songwriting of the first and second album and an unplugged, acoustic version of
Evilized. Furthermore, a video of
Children Of The Night is included.
Dragonheart is a song originally written for the
Dragonslayer album, the lyrics fit into the concept album about a knight, who has to travel out to kill a dragon and bring the heart of the beast home to save his king. Hmm, not exactly original, but never the less the album is full of Power and a certain magic, and the same goes for this midtempo tune. The song flows smoothly and has a cool structure. Gus G. treats us to some interesting guitar playing as always, and the band seems in top form. A very nice Power Metal song!
Betrayed has a more rock attitude and a somehow groovy feeling to it. The melody isn't that interesting and the song seems a little anonymous and doesn't really evolve to the point where it becomes really exciting. Not one of the best
Dream Evil tracks which is a shame, since this song and Dragonheart should be the real reason to buy this single.
I have always had a small weakness for these acoustic "remakes" of songs, when it fits the song and is well done. And
Evilized sounds perfect, wrapped up in acoustic guitars and crowned with the emotional vocals of Niklas Isfeldt! It suits this slow song well, and creates a certain intimate and intense atmosphere. The short moment when all music stops and the vocals stand alone is pure magic to me!
The Video for
Children Of The Night was shot in the hometown of the band, Gothenburg, Sweden on last year's tour in support of HammerFall. The venue is impressively huge and the video displays a well performing band, which was also the case in general on that tour I think. Though sound wise not a live video, it succeeds in visually capturing the energy and completes the feeling of standing in the middle of a gig pretty well. It's a nice treat for fans like me!
The single shows the diversity of
Dream Evil, as the songs differ quite a bit from each other.
Still, the single is mostly for fans, and if you don't know the band I'll advise you to buy one of the full length records. If you, like me, already like the band, you'll love the song Dragonheart, the acoustic version of Evilized as well as the video!
