Tuesday, December 14, 2010 - Avantasia To Release Live DVD | Avantasia, the project led by Edguy frontman Tobias Sammet - has issued the following update:
"Rumours keep circulating about a forthcoming Avantasia live DVD and now we can confirm they are true! [In February 2011] a double DVD and two-CD set (along with a box set featuring both the double DVD and two-CD set) will be out on Nuclear Blast Records (in Japan and East Asia on Avalon Marquee). The DVD is a documentary of the legendary 2008 world tour of Avantasia, when the band hit the road for the first time to write a new chapter in metal history; travelling around the world with a giant all-star ensemble to bring the metal opera on stage and play on three continents within a few days, crossing the dateline and eventually playing to a total of 400,000 people within only a few weeks. The first DVD contains a live concert with a running time of almost two hours featuring footage filmed at the headlining shows of Wacken Open Air (Germany) and Masters Of Rock (Czech Republic). On the second DVD there will be a movie, 'Around The World In 20 Days', that gives fans the opportunity to join Avantasia backstage and take a look at the surroundings and the thrill behind the scenes that go along with an extensive undertaking such as this. The DVD set will portray Avantasia 2008 when it all started."
Commented Tobias: "I am so proud of this DVD package and the featured footage, even though it took a little longer to finally complete it. It gives people an idea of what an impact the first appearance of Avantasia on stage had, and you will get an idea of how everything went beyond our expectations and what the roots and the seeds for the current Avantasia tour are. It portrays one year in Avantasia history, maybe the most important year in the project's history because that is when a studio project became a travelling institution.
"There are many metal operas, but we made it something real, something to take hold of. Something alive..." · Discuss this news further (0) |
Wednesday, September 8, 2010 - Avantasia To Go On First Ever Indoor Tour | The all-star Metal opera project Avantasia will embark on a first ever indoor world tour, starting this November. Mastermind Tobias Sammet will bring along some of Metal's finest performers, including Oliver Hartmann (ex-At Vance), Jorn Lande (Masterplan), Amanda Somerville, Bob Catley (Magnum) and the one and only Mr. Kai Hansen(ex-Helloween, Gamma Ray)!
Tobias Sammet is looking forward to sharing the stage with some of his childhood heroes, including a bunch of old Helloween members, a band that has influenced Sammet tremendously over the years!
"Kai will have a vocal role and play some guitar too. We've been friends for quite a while now. I remember, I was a little kid when I first heard Helloween's Keeper-albums. And that was the instant that lit a spark in me. Unfortunately I never got the chance to see Helloween with Michael and Kai on stage, but they'll make up for it now! Both have played an important role for me personally and for the history of Avantasia and its Metal Opera in particular. I am looking forward to sharing the stage with them and play some of our old Avantasia classics together" says Sammet.
He continues: "I remember back in 1999 I did everything to get Michael Kiske involved in what was just an album project at the time, Avantasia's "Metal Opera". I was a happy boy in a toy store when I heard the tunes I had tailored for him, anthems like "Reach Out For The Light", "The Tower", "No Return" and he was an important corner stone for making Avantasia a classic amongst melodic Metal fans all over the world. I tried hard to convince Michael to enter the stage when Avantasia played their festival shows in 2008, but the time was not right. Now the stars have lined up and I am looking forward - as a representative of Avantasia and even more so as a fan to having Michael enter the stage to perform those kinds of classic Metal tracks for the first time in more than 17 years. I am looking forward to having Bob and Jorn, Amanda, Olli Hartmann, Sascha and Miro and all my fellow-Avantasians on stage again. Maybe we will have some more surprises, let's see. Let's reach out for the light!

Monday, January 18, 2010 - Latest Avantasia Guest Singer: Jon Oliva | News from Tobias Sammet:
We can now reveal another secret regarding the forthcoming Avantasia epics "The Wicked Symphony" and "Angel Of Babylon", out on April, 3rd 2010. He used to be the mastermind of legendary US-Epic-Metal veterans Savatage, and he is also the brains behind the highly successful 'Trans-Siberian Orchestra'. To his fans he is the "Mountain king": Mr. Jon Oliva.
Tobias comments: "Jon will appear on a theatrical song called "Death Is Just A Feeling". We just had a press listening last weekend in Mousse T's prestigious Peppermint-Park studios in Hannover where we had recorded the duet with Klaus Meine a few months ago for example. Many of the numerous journalists that had come from all over Europe said that they have the feeling this is going to be the most epic and simply the best Avantasia-stuff with the widest variety so far, yet every song fits perfectly to the enchanting conceptual character. I am proud, I knew we were gonna do something momentous, but it feels great that it's been confirmed once more. Jon's song stood out as it is like a little movie itself, very eerie, and it could be a perfect chapter in a horror-musical."
Besides Jon Oliva the new Avantasia epics will have the longest list of musicians in the history of the project, there will be Klaus Meine(Scorpions), Ripper Owens (ex-Judas Priest), Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween), Bob Catley (Magnum), Eric Singer (KISS), Bruce Kulick (ex-KISS, ex-Meat Loaf), Jorn Lande (Masterplan), Russell Allen (Symphony X), Andre Matos (ex-Angra), Ralf Zdiarstek (Amitav), Oliver Hartmann, Alex Holzwarth (Rhapsody), Felix Bohnke (Edguy), Sascha Paeth (ex-Heavens Gate), Cloudy Yang, Jens Johansson (Stratovarius, ex-DIO, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen) and Miro Rodenberg. · Discuss this news further (1) |
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - Avantasia album news | Avantasia mastermind Tobias Sammet has decided that there is too much material to put it all on one album. So the next chapter of Avantasia will be spread over two albums. Says Tobias:
"I have always given my very best, but this new chapter in Avantasia's history is too much and too ambitious to be just a regular album. I have worked on it for years now, and it has become even more than two albums! I don't know if I will release one first, or both simultaneously, or maybe even both in one special package. The production is so massive and I have so many guests this time. It's the continuation of the "Scarecrow"-story. I knew that story would be spread out over two albums back then when we started working on it in 2006, cause we had written a real Rock Opera of over 20 songs even back then. But since then we kept composing, and out came even bigger and better material. Sometimes you don't have a single good idea for months, whereas at another point it just keeps flowing. "The Scarecrow" was a huge success, with that success backing me up, it's inspiring to be able to do things big time! Looking at the music industry today with all the CD burning and downloading I guess in the near future many of us traditional Rock and Metal bands won't be able to spend such a production budget, I am afraid I won't be able to afford so many guests and such a big production with orchestration and a choir and all that. That's why this production takes so much time, it may be the last big epic I will be able to afford, and I want it to be the biggest piece I have worked on so far."
So far Tobias has confirmed the following musicians to be part of the forthcoming Avantasia opus: Klaus Meine (Scorpions), Ripper Owens (ex-Judas Priest, Yngwie Malmsteen), Eric Singer (KISS), Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween), Jorn Lande (Masterplan), Bob Catley (Magnum), Sascha Paeth, Felix Bohnke (Edguy) and Alex Holzwart (Rhapsody, Sieges Even). The last guest star confirmed was Russell Allen, exceptional star vocalist of US Progressive Metal heroes Symphony X, who will be part of the new Avantasia chapters. More details about his contribution soon. · Discuss this news further (0) |
Monday, May 11, 2009 - Tobias Sammet working on new Avantasia album | News from the official Tobias Sammet website:
After the tremendous success of his latest Avantasia-album "The Scarecrow", which rocketed into the charts all over Europe (e.g. #8 in Germany), received an award for "Best Rock Production 2008" by the German association of sound engineers (VDT) and featured Top10 hit single "Lost In Space", Tobias has announced that he is currently working on new material for a new "Avantasia"-album. When asked for a release date he said: "This is not a Rock-&-Roll-homestudio-project, we'll work with a choir, with a symphony orchestra and - no matter if the music-industry goes down the toilet- I'll spend a fortune on creating the whole thing. So I'll take all the time I need, and it won't see the light of day until I am completely satisfied. Some who know my plans said, that it's unreasonable to spend one's savings on creating a piece of music these days, as the music industry is going through hard times. Absolutely right! But do you consider it extremely reasonable to shoot a man into space? It's unreasonable to spend money for whatever, life itself is unreasonable, because - believe it or not - in the end it's quite often pretty lethal. I am rather unreasonable and therefor unsad." · Discuss this news further (0) |
Sunday, June 15, 2008 - Avantasia update | Message from Tobias Sammet:
Avantasia have just finished their show in Tokyo and Tobias has checked in from the hotel room: "How are you folks? I feel like being drunk although I am not, there was just an earthquake a few seconds ago and I am on the 21st floor of a hotel tower, it scared the shit out of me, the tower was swinging back and forth like a pendulum. Wow! Anyway, I am still alive and I guess people here got used to it. So, we have played four shows with Avantasia now and we seem to get better and better. Sweden Rock was a blast, more than 30.000 people going crazy. Switzerland, Russia and Japan were great too, it's such a unique experience to play with all those musicians I had never played with before. It's a pretty great constellation and we have a lot of fun on the road. Last night we played over two hours, adding songs like "No return" and "Inside" to our regular set. I'll be off to Mexico now, we play Mexico City tomorrow. It's weird, three days ago we played Europe, a few hours ago we played Asia and in a few hours I'll cross the date line to fly to Mexico. Crossing the date line means, I'll leave Asia in the evening and arrive in San Francisco in the morning of the same day. If you do that a few thousand times you look like a baby. Thanx Japan, thanx Sweden, Switzerland, Russia. And now I am looking forward to Mexico City.

Monday, April 28, 2008 - Avantasia news | Avantasia news from Tobias Sammet:
Hello friends,
How are you doing? It's been a while since I have been speaking to you. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you for your great support. "The Scarecrow" is an album that means a lot to me and it was quite a commercial risk to just follow my heart instead of doing exactly what people expected. But if I take a look at the chart positions and sales - it went into the album charts in 16 countries, hitting the Top10 in four countries - it seems like you appreciate my honesty! Thank you!
Now preparing for the festival summer with Avantasia seems so surreal. Avantasia has never been on stage before and all of the sudden we are headlining the biggest festivals in the world, just been confirmed for the Sziget festival in Hungary on the 13th of August, playing amongst legendary bands such as R.E.M., die Ärzte, Iron Maiden and the Sex Pistols. Amazing!
The Avantasia line up will be Jorn Lande, André Matos, Amanda Somerville, Olli Hartmann, Bob Catley (not all shows), Sascha Paeth, Miro, Robert Hunecke, Claudy Yang and Frank Lindenthal who is gonna replace Eric Singer who'll be playing with KISS. Despite all rumors Michael Kiske will not be there, as he didn't wanna do it and I respect that! We'll put on a huge epic show anyway. Nobody has done something like that before and I swear, nobody will ever forget the event, neither you nor us!!!
Check the tour section to read all the dates or check www.edguy.net to read some other interesting news about a new Edguy album maybe?! Now I can't wait to hit the road.
Love and peace, Tobias · Discuss this news further (0) |

Wednesday, September 5, 2007 - Avantasia EP news | The new Avantasia 6 track albums "Lost In Space Part 1" and "Lost In Space - Part 2" have been postponed and will now be released on November 16th.
Tobias Sammet: "We have produced so much exclusive material for these two epics that we just needed the time. Except from the title track they contain completely different material, classy material, no bonus shit! In addition we decided to put some different video footage on each CD as well. We really had to postpone the release to warrant the Avantasia-quality. But it will be worth the wait: This is the resurrection a project like "Avantasia" deserves. Fans will get two major releases, each for the price of a single. Many thanks to my record company that supported the idea. I know it may be insane businesswise, but the fans will reward it."
The full story album "The Scarecrow" will be released at end of January next year via Nuclear Blast Records. · Discuss this news further (0) |
Sunday, August 5, 2007 - Avantasia news | Latest news on Avantasia:
TOBIAS SAMMET'S AVANTASIA TO HEADLINE WACKEN 2008
Tobias has just announced that finally he will do what many people had hoped for since the year 2001 when he released the first part of his
Avantasia-project. He will perform with Avantasia live on stage as one headliner besides Iron Maiden at Wacken Open Air in 2008.
RUDOLF SCHENKER & ALICE COOPER ON TOBIAS' NEW ALBUM
We have just got the official information that Scorpions-guitarist Rudolf Schenker and US-legend Alice Cooper will appear as guest musicians on Tobias' forthcoming Avantasia-project.
Tobias: "I am really proud and grateful to have Rudolf and Alice as guests on the album. I am glad Rudolf finally managed to do it as the Scorpions have been so busy promoting their new album "Humanity hour1" which I think is their best since 1987. We had to re-schedule the session once and finally we worked things out catching up backstage in Slovakia during a Scorpions/ Edguy show. And what can I say about Alice Cooper? He is a unique American legend! Everybody knows him and all I can say is: I ain't worthy, I ain't worthy! The role he's sung suits him perfectly! Both Rudolf and Alice - did great performances and I am truely blessed to have won them as special guests for my album!" Also starring on Avantasia so far: Sascha Paeth, Henjo Richter, Eric Singer, Miro, Michael Kiske, Jorn Lande, Bob Catley, Amanda Somerville & Tobias himself of course...
MICHAEL KISKE ON AVANTASIA
Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween) is in the studio right now to sing his parts for Tobias' forthcoming Avantasia album. Tobias says: "I love Michael's voice, he is the singer that made me want to become a singer myself twenty years ago. I am happy and proud that he is part of Avantasia again." · Discuss this news further (0) |
Sunday, March 11, 2007 - Avantasia news | The latest update from Tobias Sammet regarding the next Avantasia album:
As previously reported Edguy singer Tobias Sammet is working on a new Avantasia album right now. The album is being produced by Sascha Paeth, who is also playing the rhythm guitars. The drums have been played by Kiss-drummer Eric Singer and the bass is being played by Tobias himself.
Tobias: "I can't tell you how happy I am to be able to do this. There is so much creativity in the studio and the material sounds so great. There is so much variety, we got fast songs, mid tempo songs, a few ballads. There are modern elements, epic elements, classic elements. There's no limits in our creativity and I feel blessed that I am allowed to work with the most talented sidekicks I could ever dream of."
The new Avantasia album will be a concept album featuring different singers singing different characters in a story. But the concept itself won't be a sequel of the first two Avantasia albums. Stay tuned for more information. · Discuss this news further (0) |
Friday, December 29, 2006 - New Avantasia album is coming | Tobias Sammet issues Avantasia update:
"I've heard rumors going around and - yes - they're true. Quite some time ago I've started working on another Avantasia adventure! Again it's going to be a conceptual album with different musicians and singers. More about it from now on at this site. You ask why I am doing it? Because I can! Because I am dying to go for it! And because the time has come that I feel ready and strong enough to start something big, bombastic and monumental again! Believe me: you won't find any other man on the face of the earth who has got more work and stress right now - and who's yet as happy as I am. It's so exciting to see another dream of mine take shape. I wish you a successful year 2007 and - most important - I wish you happiness, health and a lot of good sex!" · Discuss this news further (0) |
