Wednesday, March 9, 2011 - New Album From Funeral For A Friend 14th March
Welsh rock legends FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND are set to release their fifth studio album 'Welcome Home Armageddon' on 14th  March and it is now streaming in its entirety pre-release at www.facebook.com/funeralforafriend. Produced by previous collaborator Romesh Dodangoda, the band homed in on the essence of their new material in a way which would present the new tracks as being as true to their live show as possible. The result of this approach will no doubt send shivers down the spine of many a FFAF fan.

Embracing the heady mix of raw heaviness and pure melody which helped establish the band's name when they were starting out, Matt describes the album as "a fist in the face followed by a kiss on the cheek". The heavier vocals take an integral role on several of the tracks. Drummer / vocalist Ryan Richards commented on his contribution to 'Front Row Seats To The End of The World' - "It was a lot of fun for me to do a lead vocal again on a track, as it's probably something I've not done since way back on the first record." The track will be released as a free download at the end of January. The visceral explosion of riffs, screams and melody is one that fans of the band already know and love but the constant shifts of gear in rhythm and twists and turns in this track will keep everyone guessing as to what's round each corner.

From the fast, punky feeling of 'Old Hymns', through the seven-string guitar led riff spectacular 'Aftertaste' and the even more riff-heavy 'Spinning Over The Island', FFAF have crafted an album of potential classics with each track as exciting and unpredictable as the one before it. Anthemic songs with killer melodies such as album closer 'Welcome Home Armageddon' and 'Sixteen', which actually started life as an acoustic number, are further demonstrations of the band's songwriting prowess and their ability to incorporate a multitude of different musical elements.
The apocalyptic sway in the title track of the album 'Welcome Home Armageddon' is explained by vocalist Matt Davies-Kreye  -  "A friend of mine was mentioning how he felt that the best thing for the planet was for the human race to just drop dead and at times I can see and understand his way of thinking but a big part of me has this (probably) misguided
faith in humanity to kind of steer the ship in the right direction for a change. So 'Welcome Home Armageddon' is the idea of patiently waiting for the end to arrive at your doorstep and give you a nice big hug."

The band will also hit the road next week with a string of dates at intimate venues, some of which are in towns they've never actually played before. The extensive run of dates has been purposefully plotted to traverse through those venues which both longtime fans and those who have discovered FFAF in recent years will appreciate for their up-close-and-personal feel. Support on these dates will come from fast rising British band Rise To Remain.

The Valleys of South Wales have never been famed for their vast reserve of rock stars in waiting. It's all green hills, closed down coal mines and sheep. isn't it? Forget the stereotypes, Funeral For A Friend are proof that there's more to their homeland than Tom Jones and male voice choirs. Emerging with a hardcore sound that's as fuelled by melody as it is by intensity, they themselves are as schooled in the guitar skills of the metal greats as they are in the thrilling abandonment of punk rock outbursts. Emotionally resonant without resorting to cliches, technically proficient without being self-indulgent, and intense without being pretentious, theirs is the sound of teeming frustration, anger and heartache articulated in an utterly fluid, convincing and above all, real way.

Having formed in early 2002, Funeral For A Friend's rise has been a phenomenally fast one. Tours with underground favourites including Boy Sets Fire and The Juliana Theory have earned them respect; shows with Finch and Lost Prophets have gotten them wider attention; and having sold out their debut headlining UK tour, they've already wowed audiences at some of Britain's biggest festivals. With triumphant performances at Download and T In The Park under their belts, they've got the Carling Reading and Leeds Festivals to look forward to in August. Theirs is a cathartic live show too - slamming its way into fans' heads, with an energy that is both honest and revitalizing.

But it isn't just live that they shine. Their first EP - 'Between Order And Model' - recorded just months after they formed, and released by Swansea's Mighty Atom label, was an ambitious and invigorating debut, distinguished by a striking combination of Matt's smooth tones and thoughtful lyrics, Ryan's gutteral backing vocals, and the intricacy of Kris' guitar work. Six months later, the quintet were showcasing for every record label in the country, and being pursued by majors eager to sign the up-and-comers. Warners subsidiary Infectious Records' early faith in the band was repaid when the group signed with them at the beginning of 2003.

The 'Four Ways To Scream Your Name' EP was released on April 21, 2003 and did just that. Within weeks of the disc's release, Funeral For A Friend's name was seemingly everywhere. First came approval from director and punk video legend Darren Doane (Blink 182/ Jimmy Eat World/ Pennywise), who was so impressed with the youngsters that he agreed to film a clip to accompany 'This Year's Most Open Heartbreak' - a soaring, seething belter of a song. The raw and jagged video took up residence on Kerrang! TV, MTV2 and was the first video ever to air on Sky TV's Scuzz channel. What followed was clambering from daytime radio to play the song - resulting in airtime on the likes of XFM, Totalrock and Music Choice. In addition, the band recorded sessions for the Radio 1 and XFM Rock Shows as well as Totalrock. Even Zoe Ball declared 'She Drove Me To Daytime Television' her Track Of The Day.

Now having released third EP 'Juneau', on July 28, the excitement has started all over again. Radio 1 has already put the title track on their C-List, and Zane Lowe personally requested a session for his new show on the BBC station. It didn't take long for FFAF to take over the print media too, with reams of coverage from the biggest music publications in the country. Everybody from NME to Q to The Sunday Times have featured them and they're one of the few bands to make the cover of Kerrang! magazine before even releasing an album.

So when that first full-length, 'Casually Dressed And Deep In Conversation', is released on October 6, the response from a fanbase and media already addicted to the band is likely to be nothing less than mental. But Funeral For A Friend are a band who deserve it. A modest band, a genuine band, and a thrilling one. 2003 will be their year to shine.
