Events and Reports - Funeral for a Friend - Live at Valbyhallen, Copenhagen - 12. November, 2003
At first I was slightly disappointed when I heard that the band opening for Iron Maiden was the (to me unknown) U.K. based Funeral for a Friend. Luckily I got their debut album a couple of days before the concert and after a few listens I started enjoying the music much more than I had imagined possible. Not exactly related to Iron Maiden musically, playing their own brand of Melodic Power Rock with some hardcore influences, it would be interesting to see if the band would come out of the concert alive and unscathed by the unforgiving Maiden audience.
As the band was taking the stage the audience was chanting for Maiden, but they got their first shock when Funeral for a Friend opened the show with This Year's Most Open Heartbreak and 10.45 Amsterdam Conversations, two of the most extreme songs of the set. These two, being from their earlier EP's which I hadn't heard before, felt a lot harder and more aggressive than the material from their debut and the screaming vocals were a little too dominating for my taste. While these songs had a lot of energy, which came through with the performance on stage I was still looking forward to the more melodic approach that I had experienced on the debut album.
After these first couple of songs people seemed to still be in various stages of shock as there was no one chanting "Maiden, Maiden" at this point. All this changed when lead singer, Matt started his own Maiden chant. After this the audience was unstopable and the chant lasted for pretty much the rest of the concert.
Getting on with the show the band went into a great rocking version of Rookie of the year. Matt's soul filled vocals worked very well live and songs like Red is the new black and Bend your arms to look like wings were my personal highlights. I felt these songs were much more interesting than the older material and showed a great improvement in the songwriting. Final highlight was the closing song Escape artists never die which worked great live too and had a lot of power.
While the band was very energized on stage they also seemed quite humble opening for Iron Maiden through the whole concert, sometimes a little too much. The band overall did a good job but seemed a little unexperienced on such a big stage where it seemed like they almost had too much room. I hope to get a chance to see these guys perform in a smaller more intimate club sometime. Funeral for a Friend did all they could to throw out some energy to the crowd and they certainly succeeded with me. No doubt, I was ready for Maiden now, more than ever.
