Events and Reports - Primal Fear - Live with Shadowside - 7th December 2002, Via Funchal - Sao Paulo - Brazil

"The Metal Commando is in Sao Paulo!" This was my thought after spying through the window and seeing a grey Sao Paulo under a pissing never ending storm.. So I get my leather jacket and slip to the nearest bus stop. Because you know my friend, when you are talking about a band like Primal Fear, you are not talking about any ordinary metal band, but a genuine heavy metal band, written in bold gothic font style!!! Hell yeah, I couldn't miss this show!

Primal Fear had already visited Sao Paulo back in 99, with their original line up but this time, we would have the chance to see them in a way better place, and, by destiny's trick, again with the original line up, since they got back in the band their former guitar player Tom Naumann. It's a shame that particular night had terrible weather conditions, cause it seems that a lot of people preferred to stay home than to get a little wet (shit, I am not made by sugar) and see a fantastic metal concert. So the house was only filled with half of it's audience capability, what worked like a real natural selection since we had there then, only real fans who knew each little piece of each song from the german metallers!

Anyways. It was almost time for the Brazilians of Shadowside to take the stage, and after seeing them play with Shaman, I couldn't expect less than a fabulous set. But when they hit the stage, the sound which comes from the speakers is terribly loud and messed up. Sad fact, this great band from Santos had problems with the sound mix during their whole set. But with a lot of energy and respect to their fans, they tried to do the best that they could to overcome this situation. If this concert was not as good as the one with Shaman, here they showed that they are pretty mature professionals, that can handle difficulties at the stage and do a correct show. The set list was pretty much the same, the only change was the cover of "Painkiller" in the place of "Rainbow in the Dark". In 50 minutes, among others, they played: "Kingdom of Life", "Believe in Yourself", "Illusions", "Land of The Free" (Gamma Ray), "Steel Tormentor" and "Future World" (Helloween).

So was time for that beautiful "METAL EAGLE" to appear in the back of the stage and the introduction song to announce that some necks were about to be crashed. And the band enters the stage playing the perfect entry of a metal concert: the mighty "Chainbreaker" is sung by every soul in the hall as it was the last day before the end of this world. Following with great crowd participation came the new album title "Black Sun", "Church of Blood" from Jaws of Death, and another excellent new track named "Mind Control".

Ralf was with a big smile from ear to ear, and feeling that was time to do a little break to calm down the first rows, he introduces the new "old" member of the band, former guitar player Tom Naumann. Happy as a kid getting a new bike in the Christmas mourning, Tom plays a lot of jokes with the audience, and after a short solo, they play the beautiful semi-ballad "Under your spell".

And so was time for one more song of the first album, this time they played "Silver and Gold" followed by "Eye of an Eagle" and "Nuclear Fire" from the Nuclear Fire album. So one of the best moments of the night happened when they play "Tears of Rage", sung by a half crowded Via Funchal as it was the Maracanã Stadium in some final. And to end the first part of the gig with a knock down, they throw at the audience some "nukes": "Armageddon", "Final Embrace" and one of my favorites "Angel in Black".

As if it was a little break to rest at the corner after the knock down, the audience follows an amazing solo of the drummer, Mr. Klaus Sperling. But the "commando" returns. With each member dressed with a t-shirt of one of the "big-five" football teams of Sao Paulo city: Sao Paulo (the best of all, course ;) ), Corinthians (Bah!), Palmeiras (Bah!), Santos (Bah!) and Portuguesa (Bah!). Ralf showing all his politics abilities, says that they "wanted to pay a tribute to the best football of the world.." But first of all they pay tribute to the big metal fans that were there, playing "Living for Metal", Gamma Ray´s "One with the world" (cool, second time I listen to a Gamma song in the night) and "Born to Rock" from the Matt Sinner band called hamm Sinner duuh.

Ending the show, Rob Half. I mean, Ralf Scheepers and companions play the metal classic "Metal Gods" from Priest and finally, after 11 rounds, the perfect knock out with "Battalions of Hate" .
