Events and Reports - Iron Fire - Live at Forbrændingen, Copenhagen - September 13, 2003
I have followed Iron Fire since the first demo, and regard their debut album, Thunderstorm, to be the best Power Metal release from Denmark in many years! The second album didn't quite live up to this, in my eyes, lacking the catchyness and classic 80's riffs that charactarised the first release. But now it seems as things are lightening up again, judging from the new demosongs, which were recently posted at the Iron Fire website. Power Metal fans, do yourself a favor and check 'em out!
Well, the band has had a low period, being fired from Noise records, as well as not being able to find a stable line up. This seems to be fixed now, with the new members José Cruz -bass , Steve Mason - drums, Mads Andersen -guitar and Jeff Lukka -guitar joining the band. Tonight was the first time I was to witness this line up.
The support came from up and coming glam band Jack Cracker, fronted by René Strunck (ex-Missing Link). They played a lot of cover tunes as well as stuff from their debut album, and despite the not overly huge crowd gathered at Forbrændingen this night, I think they managed to create a decent and pretty energetic show. Well, not really being a big glam fan, it's hard for me to judge the band in a fair way.
Then it was time for Iron Fire to enter the stage, and they chose to do so with a song called Last Train Home..hmm, never heard of it before. Same goes for the next song (Alone In The Dark), and in my eyes it would have been better to start with some song that all Iron Fire fans would recognise right away, to create an energetic atmosphere among the audience from the beginning. But the band was performing well, so it's a minor complaint. They sounded really good and fit, and it seemed that the three new members fit in well! Especially Jeff Lukka proved to be a worthy guitarist for Iron Fire. When The Heroes Fall was the first song from Thunderstorm, and a highlight for me! In the chorus and the "Ohhhh"-sing-a-long part, I sang from the top of my lungs together with the other Ironheads!
Thinking about how much I've followed this band, I was surprised that they actually managed to play five or six songs I didn't know!! Some of them were covers, and they played one new song called Power, which sounded good and promising, but otherwise it took away a little from my enjoyment of the concert. I prefer to know the most of the songs, when I see a band live. Anyway, the energy in the band, the enthusiasm in carrying out the music and some great songs made this an evening to remember! Towards the end of the show we were treated to a little fun happening, as some ex-Iron Fire members entered the stage to play and sing along!
This cool night ended with the song Thunderstorm and a cover of Under Jolly Roger (Running Wild), being played as encores! Very cool end to an enjoyable evening!
Here's the setlist from the concert:
Last Train Home
Alone In The Dark
Power
When The Heroes Fall
The End Of It All

On The Edge

Comment from Steen:
This was my first time seeing Iron Fire live and before the concert I had only listened to some of the songs available on their website, which convinced me they were worth checking out. The concert was overall enjoyable, the highlights being Thunderstorm which I was almost able to sing along to, and the closing cover song, Under Jolly Roger, complete with little fireworks to make the cannon sound. Very fun. The new songs sound quite promising and show that lead singer Martin has improved his voice since the release of their debut. The only material that seemed a little out of place were a couple of songs from On the edge.
