Before Rob
Halford decided to regroup with the mighty Priest he put out two albums with
Halford, this one and Crucible, two albums of high quality Metal. Resurrection is the most classic or traditional Metal in style of the two, Crucible being a bit harder and darker in mood.
The album kicks off with the up-tempo
Resurrection, a great heavy track with some screaming world-class vocals. I quickly got the impression that this would be a "right in your face attitude" Metal record, something that holds up in most of the songs.
Another highlight is the very "Priest alike"
Made In Hell with its melodic guitar melody, huge catchy chorus and a great lyric about living free and wild, a very positive vibe is created in this song, I also very much like the tight drumming.
The biggest treat on this album is with no doubt
Silent Screams, a monster track of dimensions.
The song slowly builds from a grooving and hard start with powerful bass lines and a dark atmosphere, into a heavier and faster tempo where fantastic vocals parts take up a lot of the attention. Very hard drums full of depth lay a solid fundament through the whole song.
A perfect example of a geniusly written song that captures and holds the magic alive through all 7 minutes.
The duet with
Bruce Dickinson in
The One You Love To Hate sounds great, lots of energy and raw power hits you right on. A short one-way going song based on a fairly simple recipe, working well nevertheless, a tight rhythm section and plenty of skillful vocal parts.
Temptation has a cool atmospheric feel, especially in the slow chorus, also the harmonious guitar solo part works very well. When talking about choruses
Night Fall must also have a word with its fantastic hymn like chorus, fantastic sung and creating the perfect mood in this well working melodic mid-tempo track.
When it comes to the stuff that isn't that well working,
Locked And Loaded comes to my mind. The grooving rhythm is in fact great but the chorus and overall approach of the song is a bit on the simple side, not really very melodic, not bad at all either.
Drive also seems to lack something really exiting; it seems too much a one-way street even though its raw riff and attitude is a cool aspect.
The songs on Resurrection all have first person lyrics, which at times are a bit simple but overall fit nicely with the energy of the songs. Some are with a very personal connection; oppositions like coming through difficult problems in life and living life to the edge are central issues.
The band sounds very tight and this is without any doubt musicians that knows their stuff, the production is perfectly balanced and with a nice amount of depth and power.
Overall this album contains many very good and melodic songs, a few aspects of more basic compositions, a very positive feeling and of course
Silent Screams, which is pure magic.
