Roxx Gang is currently on hiatus. However, lead singer and synonymous with
Roxx Gang Kevin Steele has formed a new band called
Mojo Gurus. Since Kevin Steele's is the main songwriter in
Roxx Gang I tend to compare
Mojo Gurus with - Yes, you guessed right
Roxx Gang. The inclusion of the song
Spoonful on this
Mojo Gurus album underlines the clear comparison of the 2 bands, because it was a bonus track on "Best of
Roxx Gang - Bodacious Ta Tas"
"Hot Damn" opens strongly with the high-octane rocker
Race with the Devil. Kevin Steele characteristic vocals and the surf guitar make you imagine that you cruise on the highway in a huge Cadillac. The song clearly labels
Mojo Gurus as an unpretentious band.
You'd Have To Tie Me Up To Tie Me Down follows with a saxophone and a honky tonk piano blasting out full speed. The 2 mentioned songs are my personal favorites along with the kick ass tune
Black Cat Blues, which is cut after the classic Rock 'n' Roll formula. The song has lots of great slide guitar and an overdriven guitar.
Long Hard Road brings memories of the movie "Grease" and the song
Greased lighting in particular. The backing vocals are in the same vein, while the dominating guitar riff has a sound that makes you wanna play the air guitar.
Roxx Gang rock the house with this party release. Compared to
Roxx Gang Mojo Gurus is far more experimental with their 70' inspired surf and rockabilly style. Tarantino could have used this album as the soundtrack to "Pulp Fiction" and the songs would have matched perfect into the atmosphere of the movie.
Roxx Gang has always been experimental with songs like
Tiger Lily and
Strawberry Wine, but with
Mojo Gurus they have taken the step fully and put
Roxx Gang on hiatus.
Overall this is a great album, but while the songs are great party tunes I find them a bit monotonous. The songs rock, but sometimes I miss more catchy hooks to make the songs memorable. Kevin Steele's great vocals are sometimes drowned in the massive sound from the band. His vocals should be clearer in the mix.
A great party album, that would put a smile on most faces.
